Humor is in the funnybone of the owner, so today's topic will most likely lead to a wide range of responses. That's cool. Some of us like slapstick, some like horrible puns, some get a kick out of corny pop culture references, and some enjoy a smattering of witty dialogue. In the end, it comes down to what lightens our hearts and makes us laugh, doesn't it?

So what's the funniest MMO out there? I'm going to cast my vote for, oddly enough, Fallen Earth. There's a bizarre streak of black humor that you only seem to get with a post-apocalyptic setting. The massively ugly mutated prairie chickens always make me smile, as does the weird-as-crap quotes that the wasteland inhabitants spout.

But my opinion doesn't stand alone; I want to hear yours! What MMO makes with the funny the best?
If you've got the means and know-how to throw the world's best apocalyptic party, would there be anything from stopping you doing it? Nothing got in the way of Portalarium's Richard Garriott when he wanted to create one of the most cool- and insane-sounding end-of-the-world bashes on December 21st in Austin, Texas.

"We thought this date shouldn't pass without an interactive soiree," Garriott explained. The creator of Ultima Online is famous for throwing strange elaborate parties, including a Titanic get-together where he sunk the boat with the party-goers on it.

Garriott created a 30-foot Mayan pyramid as the centerpiece of the event. Around the pyramid were four apocalypse-themed tents, including an alien tent with a Sputnik replica and a hedonism display with naked zebra ladies prancing about.

The $1,000-plus door charge for the party went toward the X Prize Foundation.
Richard Garriott throws end-of-the-world party, world survives in style originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 03 Jan 2013 16:00:00 EST. Laughing is not just good for the soul, it's great for your physical health. Seriously. That's why I'm always open to the possibility of an MMO making me laugh in a non-ironic, non-derisive way.

For example, the other day I was running a dungeon in The Secret World when a skeezy succubus at the end drolled, "So sorry... but your princess is in another castle." That was good for a surprised guffaw.

I'm also often amused by quest text, especially when it's a little crazy or unexpected. I'm also a fan of black humor if done right. If it's really good or catches me off my guard, I'll find myself laughing out loud and scaring my family just a little bit.

So what about you? When's the last time an MMO made you laugh?
So the other day I was doing my typical Guild Wars 2 exploration thing when I saw that I was close to a point of interest that I needed. It was down a frozen river, so I started jogging in an Asuran fashion. I was a little distracted, however, and ended up running right off a frozen waterfall to do a fatal faceplant some fifty feet below. You can see the result above.

The funny thing is that I landed next to another dead player, whose corpse let out a guffaw when she saw me arrive in the same fashion. Sometimes death loves company, y'know?

In the spirit of my many, many boneheaded deaths, I'd love to hear about one of your best demises as of late. Was it funny? Embarrassing? Epic? Futile?

Geeks and webcomics go together like pennies and arcades, but finding a good gaming webcomic that also covers MMOs is sometimes a challenge. As gamers, we like to have fun, and it's assumed that with that sense of fun comes a sense of the funny.

Luckily, we have some true works of art with such comics as Ctrl+Alt+Del, Penny Arcade, and Order of the Stick, which not only appeal to our deepest gamer sensibilities but also regularly cover MMO topics. New comics are popping up all the time, and it's good to see budding young artists trying their hands at the popular genre.

But we want to hear your favorites! Which game-related webcomics do you enjoy the most?
The dead tell the best stories, they say.

Outside of Divinity's Reach in Guild Wars 2 is a graveyard. It's the type of place that you run through quickly on your way to more lively settings, unless a zombie attack emerges. It was the type of place that I was running through quickly during the previous beta weekend when I realized that the gravestones could be examined -- and each and every one of them had an interesting epitaph to read. Some crazy ArenaNet writer sat down one afternoon and wrote out dozens and dozens of gravestone inscriptions on the off-chance that any of us would slow down enough to read them. It paid off in my case.

This may be one of the most trivial Perfect Tens I've ever done, so forgive me with being absolutely fascinated by the epitaphs that came up during my explorations. With an absolute economy of words, each gravestone tells a complete story. Some are funny, some are dark, some play into the lore, and some actually managed to be quite moving.
Minecraft players are well-known for their insane, over-the-top LEGO building projects, but one may have all the rest beat. A player named Rumsey is in the process of recreating the entire world of Azeroth from World of Warcraft inside the game, and while it's not completed quite yet, it's already incredibly impressive.

Rumsey says that he had to cheat a little: Instead of placing every single block by hand, he wrote a piece of software that helps to automate the process of making full-scale version of the world. He's recently completed one continent -- Kalimdor -- and has plans to do the others as well as all of WoW's dungeons. He says that the only problem he's run into is Minecraft's height limit of 128 blocks, so he's had to employ mods to get around that.

When the project is complete, Rumsey has hopes that it will be hosted online for tourists to visit this much blockier version of their favorite WoW stomping grounds.
The world of World of Warcraft recreated in Minecraft originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 09 Feb 2012 09:00:00 EST. We all know that in-game GMs work hard to process a heavy ticket load and often use standard scripts and cut-n-paste replies as a result. However, there are real people behind these names, and some of them even have a sense of humor.

GameFront shared a story of a World of Warcraft player named Dougie who asked to be knighted with the "Fresh," title, a GM responded tongue-in-cheek by saying that another already held it:

Sit well Dougie, and listen to this tale.

This is a tale of events which hath inverted a young ones life, and led to his eventual appointment as heir to the throne of the Bel Air Township.

Begat and reared in western Philadelphia spending many a day becoming frigid whilst filling baskets adjacent to the academy. Ruffians ran rampant through the village; a scuffle ensued prompting his fearful mother to change his domicile to that with over kin, in Bel Air.

He summoned a cart, which appeared most gaudy, nonetheless he beseeched the driver to take him to Bel Air. Arriving barely after nightfall, he bid the knave goodbye, as he relished his arrival at his new place of residence, where he was awarded the title of 'The Fresh Prince.'

So there you have it: Proof that GMs can and do have a sense of humor -- and also a comprehensive knowledge of 90s sitcoms.
Proof that GMs have a sense of humor discovered in WoW originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 02 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. There are always plenty of memories to make and share with others, as MMOs tend to be never-ending playgrounds for us to romp around in. And after recalling major events for Runes of Magic's second birthday, I've been stuck in fond-memory mode. Two years of playing RoM is a lot of time to build up memories, too. I've gone through many a server, guild and character since I started, and I've both made memories with friends and remembered events the game itself created.

Sometimes a developer forgets to turn off a light switch, a new bug appears, or a new patch brings unintended changes. I remember a handful of times some pretty interesting things have happened. Mysterious statues popping up, bosses appearing in houses, and other anomalies await after the break.
Continue reading Lost Pages of Taborea: What just happened?

Lost Pages of Taborea: What just happened? originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 15:30:00 EST.
It's one of my ongoing theories that MMOs severely tempt (if not outright encourage) us to engage in the less savory aspects of our character. I'm sometimes worried that these games do shape our personalities, at least while we're playing, to bring out the worst in us. I'm not talking about addiction or anything like that, but rather about things as simple as fostering greediness, selfishness, envy and bullying. From games that are supposed to be massively social, I often get the impression that the message they're preaching is to look out for yourself and get ahead of the (kill ten) rat race any way possible.

At least in my own game sessions, I've seen signs of this happening. I've kept silent when guildies ask for help, because I want to get this quest done for myself. I've fallen into the stressful grind of endgame gear to the point of becoming completely fixated on it to the exclusion of all else. Once or twice I've written an angry diatribe on forums, attempting to use the sheer weight of my words to club the opposition into submission. And, yes, I've lost my cool with party members whom I judged as not pulling their weight, and I've chewed them out.

It's usually at times like these when someone or something kicks in to remind me that I have gotten a little too serious and need to lighten up. It's not that MMOs are "just" games but that these are games, and as such, shouldn't we be having more fun and laughing more often than we do now? This is why, over the years, I've developed a personal philosophy of gaming that revolves around three simple concepts: if it's not fun, don't do it; help others when the opportunity arises; and always bring a sense of humor to the playing field. Today I'd like to explore that last one.
Continue reading The Soapbox: A sense of humor is your number one weapon

The Soapbox: A sense of humor is your number one weapon originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. EVE Online's new character creator went live yesterday in a mammoth 1.2 Gb patch. While some players (myself included) are still waiting for the patch to finish downloading, it's already clear that the new characters are a big hit with the EVE community. Immediately following the Incursion expansion's final release yesterday, the forums exploded with topics full of people trying out the new avatar customisation process -- with hilarious results. Players have even begun faithfully re-creating real-world celebrities, from Freddie Mercury and the Village People to the cast of Star Trek. On the other side of the fence, some visually impressive, realistic and even emotive avatars have been produced.

Before the new character creator went live, people had some reservations about it. While the new characters were expected to look very realistic, some players prefer to pull funny faces and create hilarious avatars that better suit their clownish approach to the game. Other players expressed concerns that there might not be enough variety, and that all the members of one bloodline would look almost identical. While the choice of clothing is likely to remain limited until Incarna, it seems that all other fears have been squarely put to rest as players continue to make some fantastic and often hilarious avatars.
Freddie Mercury spotted in EVE Online originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 19:00:00 EST. It is, in so many ways, the antithesis of a modern MMORPG. It has crude stick figure drawings instead of lush 3-D graphics. It limits your daily activities to a handful of encounters. It often mocks, belittles and berates you for your stupidity. It uses meat for currency and has a character class that dabbles in pasta-based magic. It's been in open beta for the better part of a decade now. And its endgame is actually an end-of-the-game instead of an eternal raiding grind.

I speak, of course, about The Kingdom of Loathing, one of the oddest online RPGs on the net -- and one of the most beloved. When I mulled over the game for this month's retrospective, I found myself really wanting to talk about KoL but a little unsure whether it truly belongs in the pantheon of accepted MMOs. At best, it's on the fringe; while you do play in a world populated by hundreds, if not thousands, of other players at any given time, it's mostly a solo exercise apart from the chat channel. However, it is a persistent world, it does hold many of the trappings of MMORPGs, and the creators have come up with clever ways for players to interact within a turn-based RPG. I'm also a huge fan, having dabbled in KoL off and on for over four years now, and I love recommending it to friends.

So what the heck -- we're doing it. Kingdom of Loathing is a great success story in its own right and has a lot to teach the rest of the MMO industry about unconventional methods of structuring and presenting these games. Hit the jump and we'll run down eight highlights that separate KoL from the rest of the pack and make it a game well worth your spare time.
Continue reading The Game Archaeologist's fear and loathing in the Kingdom: The highlights

The Game Archaeologist's fear and loathing in the Kingdom: The highlights originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. One of the things you're guaranteed to see with any high-powered character creator is characters from known worlds, costumes, or other things we recognize zooming around. Then there are cases like today's All Points Bulletin One Shots, where we get a fun mashup of different things we may know and love. This image comes to us from Crabtree on the Zombie server, who writes in to explain the spectacular Mod-Squad(ish)-meets-Star-Trek image we see above:

"A handful of my friends and I have been enjoying APB thus far, despite some of the negative things that can be said about the game. Above all, it has delivered some amazing creation and customization tools, and we simply haven't been able to pass up the opportunity to create some iconic characters using custom full-body tattoos and/or clothing. Among some of our creations are imitations of Deadpool, Waldo (Where is...?), and most recently a group of Star Trek: The Next Generation characters, equipped with their very own Enterprise Star Truk. We have wondered if our creations might stir up some copyright concerns, but we figure the hilarity and recognition is worth the risk."

If you've pulled off a creative mashup thanks to a high-powered character creator in your favorite MMO, we'd love to see what you dreamed up. Send those screenshots in to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. We'll post them out here and give you the credit for sending it in!
Today's the day! The crowd over at Sony Online Entertainment are throwing open the doors to their new casual, fun for all ages MMO, Free Realms, and you're all invited. For those of you (maybe all, what, two of you?) who haven't noticed the deluge of Free Realms news we've put out since beta started, SOE has sent along a special video featuring their mascot, Chatty the Squirrel. At least, we think that's a squirrel.

Regardless of just precisely what the madly-coiffed mammal is, one thing you cannot deny is that Free Realms boasts a lot of fun mini-games, a variety of things to do, and the always welcome price tag of free. So while we're waiting for the servers to come up later today, why not enjoy the new Free Realms official launch trailer behind the break. It was voted 'most likely to earwig you with that catchy theme song' by its class.
Continue reading Free Realms shows off the fun with their launch video

Free Realms shows off the fun with their launch video originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 15:00:00 EST.
Normally we likely wouldn't generally add in a 'screenshot' from a browser-based, primarily text MMO, but we're such huge fans of the Test of Literacy that we simply couldn't resist posting this Kingdom of Loathing screen that was sent in to us by Harmen. Here's what he had to say about this extremely funny screenshot - A One Shot of something completely different: Kingdom of Loathing, browser-based, stick-figures, is hilarious, free, really rather hard and even includes PvP. It has been running since 2003, and is still actively expanded. This is a screenshot of the 'tests' you need to pass when you want to enter the chat channel the first time. One of the tests is the difference between 'their', 'there' and 'they're'. Really, we think more MMOs should have literacy tests.

If you're playing a funny, independent, off-the-beaten-path MMO, we want to see a screenshot and hear a bit about why you think this is a really cool game! One of the things that our new webcomic Grinders brought to mind were some of the things that used to drive us absolutely bonkers about the old-school MMOs we used to play. Speaking personally, I could list a whole bunch of things from original EverQuest; having to stare at the wall or the floor to cast heals for my party otherwise the spell effects caused my poor old computer to lag unbearably; the idea that you had to regenerate mana by staring at your spellbook for well on 5 minutes; dying, losing a level, and then running back naked and alone. There's a whole bunch more, but this morning we thought we'd ask you - what are some of the old-school things you remember as being totally normal and expected from your early MMO experience that just make you shake your head now?
The Daily Grind: We had to grind uphill, both ways! originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 08:00:00 EST. Sometimes it's a question of a group or raid member writing in the wrong channel - the classic mis-tell. At other times, it's just a joke about your favorite MMO that one of your guildies told you.

That said, this morning we'd love to hear some of the funniest chat moments you've experienced. (Bonus points if you screencapped it and happen to have it somewhere out there that the rest of us can read it!) We know we're not the only ones who have seen some things that just made us stop and laugh.
The Daily Grind: Your funniest chat moment? originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 22 Feb 2009 08:00:00 EST. We've seen outdoor shots, and occasional solo characters, but as yet we hadn't really seen any large groups of World of Warcraft players enjoying all there is to offer in Wrath of the Lich King. Today's One Shots from our regular contributor Deadend (who you may remember as sending us screens from the Wrath beta) from the Exodar server sent in this screenshot with a bit of a humourous twist. While we know this is likely a screenshot of a group finishing up an instance run, Deadend instead sent it in with the following description that made us stop and laugh: "I had a shorter line picking up WotLK at a midnight opening." We're also pretty impressed with whoever managed to get them all to line up - our groups aren't nearly that orderly!

Do you have a screenshot that you've got a unique and funny take on, totally unrelated to what's actually going on? If so, you should send those to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com! Remember to include your name and the game it's from; a description is entirely optional. We'll post it out here for everyone to check out, and tell them you sent the awesome screen to us.

Gallery: One Shots

One Shots: Just waiting in line originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 14:00:00 EST. When we saw this particular screenshot come in to the One Shots mailbox, we had to stop and stare for a moment just to figure out what precisely was going on here. This rather ridiculously timed World of Warcraft One Shots came in to us from Stockadin, one of a very silly Paladin pair from the guild Aggro Sapiens on the Hellscream server. Stockadin let us know that "this was actually done on accident with me goofin' off. But once my friend looted the chest and i noticed the position, I told him not to move. Too funny -- and perfect." We're just glad we'd finished our coffee before we opened the mail.

Have you had an... interesting bit of graphical silliness happen to you in game? Screenshots like this deserve to be shared; not wasting away alone and unlaughed-at in your screenshot folder. Grab your best (or would that be worst?) and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com, along with your name, server, and a quick description. We'll share them with the rest of our readers and give you the credit for bringing the funny.

Gallery: One Shots

One Shots: More loot than they bargained for originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 14:00:00 EST. Forgetting that, today is a special post, its a game close to my heart, and it isn't a review. It's World of Warcraft folks; there is no need to review it, what do you want me to say? Honestly, it's THE World of Warcraft, there aren't any imitations that even come close, well, maybe one. So I won't bore you with a 5 minute long video reviewing what we already know, instead I have made a 9 minute long video showing off my mad PvP/PvE skills in my recent DINGSTRAVAGANZA!
Today's One Shots isn't one of a game -- it's of one of the most popular virtual worlds out there, Second Life. This particular screenshot was one of the first things our Senior Editor, Elizabeth Harper found after she had decided to jump into Second Life and check it out. We're not entirely sure what the story is behind this particular display, but we do know that it's terribly cute. We're also curious just what would happen if one were to theoretically feed the plushies. Would they turn into gremlins? Or perhaps they're just on a low-fat plushie diet after being fed too many snacks for being too cute.

Have you seen anything in your travels that made you stop and giggle? The stream of Age of Conan strangeness continues. It seems no sooner do we put up one oddball graphics bug, than another surfaces in our mailbox. This one has to be one of the stranger ones we've seen -- yes, stranger than missing bodies or tablecloth capes. Today's One Shots glitch screenshot from Age of Conan comes to us courtesy of Draimen from Blood of Crom, who tells us the following tale:

[This is] a screenshot of one of my guildies from [our] grinding group. He got a glitch where his weapon in his alternate slot gets stuck as the model in his main hand. Then when he switched his alternate slot to a bow, he was using a bow but it showed his 2H mace. So, he was shooting 2H maces at people. It was pretty awesome.

It certainly looks pretty silly... and like it would be painful. Although it could make for some interesting fatalities.

Do you have some off-the-wall glitches you've seen in your day to day gaming? Have server lag or disconnects caused some strange things? If so, we'd love to see them and hear all about it. Just send those screens to us at oneshots AT massively.com!

Gallery: One Shots

One Shots: Mace to the face! originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 14:10:00 EST. There were those who had accidentally typed "a" back in the day in EverQuest while trying to /hail an NPC -- thereby attacking them, since "a" was auto-attack. Others had some great stories to tell from World of Warcraft, such as one tale of a poor unwitting group that went into Scarlet Monastery and weren't aware you needed to clear the entire cathedral before you pulled the boss at the end. (He calls all mobs still alive in the cathedral to come beat you to a pulp otherwise. Oops.)

One of our favorites had to have come from our own blogger, Adrian Bott. Adrian's own silly character death came while playing Age of Conan. He said that while merrily smacking chickens to watch them explode in game, he was unexpectedly attacked and beaten to death by an angry chicken seller NPC. That has to be one of the strangest (but funniest) deaths we've heard of as yet. What would be some of your funniest deaths in an MMO?

The Daily Grind: What's your funniest death originally appeared on Massively on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 08:00:00 EST. You see, Age of Conan was released today, and with that it conjures up images of the greatest barbarian of all time, Hulk Hogan - don't pretend like you don't remember all the words to his song, "I am a real Barbarian".

Anyway, I digress: AoC has been billed as one of the four horsemen to herald the end of Blizzard's evil tyranny over the MMO market, but can any game, or any group of games, really topple the giant that is World of Warcraft?
After last week's trouncing I decided I would have to find a friendlier bunch of gamers to have a laugh with and try to have an insight on what playing their game is like. What I found surprised me. I wasn't expecting to see what I saw, the love and affection that these people give out, to complete strangers half the time, of all different shapes and cup sizes, it really warms the heart.

Sure they get a lot of grief from gamers, mostly for it being a game, or for the amount of adults-only content continually poked at by the media. But I am not here to judge, I am here to review (Ed: Turpster, judge is a synonym for review.) On with the video! (Ed: Turpster, who is Ed? Though the melodious voice beloved by Tenacious D fans around the world would make a great dark lord, the leader of the Chaos Faction in Warhammer Online will have to find some other inspiration. Similarly Andy Serkis won't be voicing Gazbag and Grumlock (the Orc leaders), Patrick Stewart won't be voicing Karl Franz (leader of the Empire faction), and Malekith, leader of the Dark Elves, won't be voiced by Hugo Weaving.

All of these well-known actors, and more, were rumored to be playing big roles in EA Mythic's in-development title. Discussion of these actors has been swirling through WAR forums for a few weeks, and was repeated on a popular Warhammer-related podcast. Certainly, with EA backing the game's production, it doesn't seem out of the question that such A-list celebrities could be corralled for contributions. Most of them have already done voice work in games before, making it all the more likely. For confirmation Massively contacted a press representative that works with the company. We recieved this humorous response in return: "We looked into this voiceover talent list, and it is not true. Sorry to disappoint! WAR will definitely have high-quality voiceovers, but no Jack Black."

More's the pity, but best to keep everything clear just the same. Thanks to Eddiemae Jukes for setting the record straight. Just to complete the set, other rumored contributors included Michael Ironside as the Dwarven leader Thorgrim, and Ian McKellan as the Phoenix King (the High Elven leader). While we're not entirely sure if this is really the precursor to golf, or if it's more in keeping with hockey or perhaps even croquet, we have to admit, this Lord of the Rings Online screenshot made us laugh pretty hard. Today's One Shots comes to us from Captain Finudir of Gondor, who sent the above screenshot in to us with the following note:

As Captain Finudir of Gondor toured the Northern Shire, he came across this odd wooden sculpture. Is this an artist's rendering of what eventually became golf? Notice the smile on the hobbit's face. Clearly, he is enjoying himself.

We really think it's the almost smug look of "this one is going into orbit" that really makes this one laugh-worthy. We can just picture any of us doing that after a particularly nasty battle, too. Fore!

Have you found anything in your game of choice that just shows off that the designers have a great sense of humor? Perhaps you've found a hilarious easter egg, or saw something that just made you stop and laugh that another player did. Whatever the case may be, we'd love to see it!
I really hoped that I haven't peaked as an MMO reviewer, because this week's episode, complete with costumes and musical accompaniment, might be the best TV yet. This week our friendly co-lead blogger, Mike Schramm, punished me by having me review what many regard as an absolutely terrible game.

With that said we invite you to join us after the break to see if Turpster can survive against such a title and hopefully answer the question on the lips of players around the world: Can Turpster really sing?
We're still filling in for our regular cinediva Moo Money who is ramping up for SXSW this weekend. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on if you like more amateur machinima or not. Today's Cinemassively is interesting to us from the standpoint of choreography, editing and just pure fun. If you're looking for epic story-lines, tight scripting, or great visual effects, this isn't it. If, however, you are looking for a fun little music video that features City of Heroes celebrity cameos, including what may quite possibly be the most Freakshow (yet best choreographed) CoH chorus line ever, then this is for you!

[Thanks, Blazefire from The Girls of Nukem High]
Cinemassively: Bobbo No. 5 originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 12:30:00 EST.
Hello and thanks for joining me again for another fun filled feature here on Massively! I love my job, it totally rocks, I get to have all sorts of fun and hopefully you guys enjoy it a little bit too. I normally am happy with you guys turning up and leaving the odd comment or two below though this week I have to ask you for a favor. On Saturday, just after the WoW Insider Show, I was chatting to everyone's favorite Shaman <strike>Crybaby</strike> Crusader who was just heading off to a D&D game. I then posed the question to him, "which was the most awesome and manly of DnD characters." Obviously I chose the correct answer and Mike chose the wrong one. Let me know which way you swing in your comments: Bard or Wizard? Who wins? You decide!

(Oh and there is a video or something like that after the break!)
Continue reading TurpsterVision: Lord of the Dings

TurpsterVision: Lord of the Dings originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 26 Feb 2008 15:15:00 EST. They specifically called out Dungeons and Dragons Online for being kind of terrible at launch. A year after Burning Crusade's explosively successful launch, non-players must see DDO's tiny subscriber base as comparatively irrelevant. In analyzing the preview video for the game's sixth module, Tycho describes the views of a jade visage leading to a below-ground adventuring scenario:"Your dungeon entrance says something about you as a subterranean civilization, and this one said that I could avoid it altogether, and not miss much."

The problem, as he goes on, is that it doesn't actually matter how good DDO is. With World of Warcraft now having several years of game updates, a highly successful expansion, and (oh yeah) ten MILLION players, any game that will draw away a significant number of players from Blizzard will have to be substantially better than WoW.

The thought occurred to me that even then there's a danger if the game's improvements are simply subtle tweaks on the industry standard. If 'feature X' is the big draw for a game, there's absolutely no reason Blizzard couldn't work all or part of X into their game. Then you get "feature X, plus ten million players!" Warhammer Online's RvR-centered gameplay and Age of Conan's unique combat mark them as real competitors ... but will they be good enough?

That, as we've talked about again and again, is the real crux of WoW's success: it has reached critical mass. As Mr. Brahe concludes, "They have set up a system that allows me to rent my friends on a monthly basis." It's hard to argue with the convenience of pre-packaged acquaintances.

Many of us make it a part of our daily reading to stop into sites like Penny Arcade, Looking for Group, Dark Legacy Comics and PVP Online. Maybe you've even gone so far as to join one of their MMO guilds! But there are so many great comics out there that it could take an eternity to hunt them all down.

For today's question, we'd like to ask you just what your favorite gaming-related webcomics are? Are you, like us, fans and followers of the adventures of Gabe and Tycho, or do you have an in-game macro that allows you to charge into battle with the cry "for Pony!" We'd love to hear which ones you absolutely can't live without -- perhaps we'll all pick up some great new webcomics in the mix!
The Daily Grind: Your favorite gaming webcomics? originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 27 Jan 2008 09:30:00 EST. Have you ever run around in your game of choice only to stop dead in your tracks, laughing at a great guild name you've seen? We definitely have. One of the funny ones we've spotted in World of Warcraft was <and two stealthed Rogues>, which made it look like the player had a subtitle telling you that at all times two stealthed Rogues were with them. But we know that while we're in a lot of different worlds, we haven't seen one tenth of the funny guild names out there. Today we'd love to hear your favorites! What guild names (or guild names combined with character names as with the Horde player we found above) have made you laugh?
The Daily Grind: Funny guild names originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 08:10:00 EST. What kinds of quests? Well, as highlighted in a recent Real Life comic, one of the Nagrand quests sends you hunting around in Talbuk poo to get beans which you then make something to eat from them. Admittedly, I can't speak for anyone else, but I finished that quest arc with every single one of those 'Nagrand Cherries' still in my bag -- having made a few underwater breathing potions on my Alchemist alt.

Sure, you're aware that you aren't really eating the poo-beans, but the idea was just gross to me at the time. (Besides, I had a lot of herbs back-stocked, so it cost me nothing beyond the vials and a mailing fee.) But we know that's far from the only yucky quest out there. For today's question, we thought we'd ask just what quest you've come across made you stop and go "ew" in your travels. We know Blizzard can't have the corner of the market on gross, so share your yucky stories!
The Daily Grind: Most disgusting quest originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 08:05:00 EST.
