Missing livestreams is <em>so</em> 2011! There's no excuse now, what with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mv-guide/">the livestream schedule page</a> going up every week, the constant reminders across Twitter, and the super-cool regulars we have who hang out in the chat room with us. But, alas, some of you <em>do</em> occasionally miss a stream or two and need someone to point out what you might have missed. That someone would be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/beau-hindman">me</a>, and this column is the place to go.<br />
<br />
Last week we had all sorts of cool stuff. Some of the highlights? First we had Richie with some <a href="http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/d3/?int=d3"><em>Diablo III</em></a> Hell-smashing action, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/mj-guthrie">MJ</a> deciding to run some dungeons in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> and <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>, finishing up her <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a> run in <a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> and checking up housing decorations in <a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/"><em>Vanguard</em></a>. I'm known to run a stream or two as well, and this week I showed off the new fully voice-acted quest <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/song-from-the-depths">Song from the Depths</a> in <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>.<br />

So, who here remembers the <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> launch? I certainly do; I was there and I've been here since, after all. And who here remembers how the game launched to critical acclaim and overwhelming popularity?<br />
<br />
Yeah, okay. I liked the game at launch, but that was more because of the underlying philosophies and approaches, not because the whole thing was polished to a fine shine. It was almost two years ago now, and the game has had to go through a lot of growing pains in that time, fixing a lot of elements that didn't work and adjusting stuff that was almost there but not quite. It's been a long process of hammering out fixes and improvements, one that included a long stretch of no subscription fee as the game cleaned itself up.<br />
<br />
We're nearly at the end of that process now, but <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square-Enix</a> is trying to show everyone that the company appreciates players who have been around during the game's teething troubles. That's the Legacy program in a nutshell -- a chance for players to signify having been around for an extended period of time. A badge of honor, a show of loyalty, and arguably another little bit of bait to get people to subscribe now instead of later.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-mog-log-the-legacy-rewards-and-what-they-mean/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: The Legacy rewards and what they mean</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-mog-log-the-legacy-rewards-and-what-they-mean/">The Mog Log: The Legacy rewards and what they mean</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. This week's Tattered Notebook started off business as usual. I was putting together part two of a look at the layers of change in <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> through the years. But I was also mulling over a column about the new Hero's Edge items that arrived on the Marketplace; something I had just speculated about in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/12/the-tattered-notebook-learning-from-eqiis-free-to-play-model/">a recent column</a>. There was also the news about upcoming crafting changes to talk about.<br />
<br />
And then, suddenly everything gets put into perspective. Ribbitribbitt, the young <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EQII</em></a> fan who had been battling cancer, passed away at the age of six. A couple of months ago, the <em>EQII</em> community got a request for assistance in building an in-game playground from his mother, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/17/the-tattered-notebook-the-touching-story-of-ribbitribbit-and-th/">what followed</a> was an unprecedented show of support. His mother, Myrose, passed along the sad news to the community this past week with <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?&amp;topic_id=518604">a brief forum post</a>, and the community mourned his loss.<br />
<br />
In this week's Tattered Notebook, we'll explore how Ribbitribbitt brought a community together, and look at the grieving process from losing an in-game friend.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-tattered-notebook-the-passing-of-ribbitribbitt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: The passing of Ribbitribbitt</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-tattered-notebook-the-passing-of-ribbitribbitt/">The Tattered Notebook: The passing of Ribbitribbitt</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> has begun carpet-bombing media outlets with publicity relating to its upcoming <a href="http://www.planetside2.com"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> MMOFPS. The game has been in development for quite a while now, but up until very recently the devs have kept a low profile. Now the title's Twitter feed is exploding on a daily basis, awe-inspiring <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/take-to-the-skies-with-planetside-2s-aerial-combat-trailer/">alpha gameplay videos</a> are finding their way into the public eye, and interviews abound.<br />
<br />
I managed to get creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/matt-higby">Matt Higby's</a> attention for a few moments, and he's got some interesting things to say about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2's</em></a> upside. Would you believe that MMOFPS is about to become a new industry buzzword? Read on after the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-firing-line-planetside-2s-matt-higby-on-the-mmofps-revolut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: PlanetSide 2's Matt Higby on the MMOFPS revolution</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/the-firing-line-planetside-2s-matt-higby-on-the-mmofps-revolut/">The Firing Line: PlanetSide 2's Matt Higby on the MMOFPS revolution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 26 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. This week in Betawatch, the biggest news is that the game everyone <em>expected</em> to be in beta isn't around. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/arenanet-confirms-no-beta-for-this-weekend/"><em>Guild Wars 2</em> is not running a beta weekend this weekend</a>, meaning that anyone hoping to spend their long weekend in Tyria is going to have to go with the classic version. We also say farewell to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/aeria-launches-star-supremacy-browser-mmorts/"><em>Star Supremacy</em></a> in wake of its launch.<br />
<br />
However, for those who love testing unreleased games, it's not all bad news. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/world-of-warplanes-closed-beta-starts-may-31st/"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a> has announced its closed beta kicking off at the end of the month, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/mechwarrior-online-announces-closed-beta-and-founders-program/"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a> is heading into its closed beta this week. The few. The proud. The quest writers.<br />
<br />
At the best of times, the fruits of their labors guide us along in our progression of a local or global story, immersing us in the world. Even the nefarious "kill 10 rats" versions can be mini stories that pull players in when done well. But how many of us have ever had a "I could do better than that" moment or have simply wanted to live out a personal story or share in a customized grand adventure with our friends? Someone wished upon the right star because with features like the Mission Architect in <a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> you can do just that.<br />
<br />
I am just going to come right out and say it -- the quest builder is one of the greatest boons ever for player-generated content in MMORPGs. Besides housing, it is the feature du jour for the creative crowd; I honestly can't see how any game can actually go without one. During this latest round of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure/">Choose My Adventure</a>, I had the opportunity to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/choose-my-adventure-the-last-mile/">check out</a> the system in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> and revel in the creativity of others as well as try my hand at developing missions. And I tell you, it is addicting.<br />
<br />
Feel like trying your hand at shaping some stories for heroes (and villains) to star in? Stick with me, kid, and you'll be directing your own missions in no time.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/some-assembly-required-city-of-heroes-mission-architect/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: City of Heroes' Mission Architect</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/some-assembly-required-city-of-heroes-mission-architect/">Some Assembly Required: City of Heroes' Mission Architect</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. I've had my fill of MMORTS games. I love them, and I mean <em>love</em> them, but after being asked to look at the 567,386th title from the genre, I am getting a wicked case of tunnel vision. Sometimes I wish I could hit a switch and see these games with the eyes of a brand-new player, to truly judge their quality without any preconceptions. That's not possible, unfortunately.<br />
<br />
Luckily, once in a while there comes along a title that feels fresh or does enough with design to seem new and clever. <a href="https://alliances.commandandconquer.com/?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=alliances.commandandconquer.com&amp;utm_campaign=p4f-common-nav"><em>Command and Conquer Tiberium Alliances</em></a> stands out from the crowd with its interesting combat and a casual approach to hardcore gaming. I have to admit that, at first, I was a bit bummed at having to take a look at yet another epic strategy game that would probably not feel that epic, but my mind was changed after a solid week of playing.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/mmobility-command-and-conquers-new-twist-on-the-mmorts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: Command and Conquer's new twist on the MMORTS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/mmobility-command-and-conquers-new-twist-on-the-mmorts/">MMObility: Command and Conquer's new twist on the MMORTS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. Explaining guilds to people who don't play MMOs is always odd. You have to explain the process of applying, getting interviewed, and generally being brought on some trial runs in a way that doesn't make the whole thing sound like an unpleasant second job. This is even worse when it comes to explaining roleplaying guilds, which often level all the same restrictions as endgame-focused guilds with the added benefit that you're being examined based on your character rather than your play ability.<br />
<br />
So it feels like a real kick in the teeth to do all that and then get rejected.<br />
<br />
At face value, this feels outright ridiculous. The only criteria for a roleplaying guild should be roleplaying, and if you're applying for one, you almost by definition pass. But there's actually a lot of valid reasons to say that someone just isn't right for your roleplaying guild. So you might not have been rejected because the guild is made up of judgmental pricks -- it might be for the best.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/storyboard-why-i-rejected-your-guild-application/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Storyboard: Why I rejected your guild application</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/storyboard-why-i-rejected-your-guild-application/">Storyboard: Why I rejected your guild application</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. So <a href="http://www.planetside.com"><em>PlanetSide</em></a> is nine years old this week (nine!), and <a href="http://www.soe.com">Sony Online Entertainment</a> is journeying down memory lane to look back at its ground-breaking MMOFPS. The firm is of course hard at work on the sequel, but some of the devs have taken a time-out to share their favorite memories with us.<br />
<br />
Though the word "epic" is overused in MMO discourse, it's a recurring theme here. Due to the size, scope, and sheer ambition on display in the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>, it's actually appropriate too. During the first 10 minutes of my time with <a href="http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/2/index.html"><em>Heroes &amp; Generals</em></a>, I killed once, died twice, and drove a tank, a jeep, a half-track, and a bicycle (not necessarily in that order). I also rode shotgun on said tank and said jeep, manning a nifty vehicle-mounted machine gun in the process.<br />
<br />
I marveled at the visuals, took way too many screenshots of my squadmates looking at the blow-away badass in-game map (it's the little things, amirite?), and generally had a helluva good time. Did I mention that all of this happened in a browser?<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/the-firing-line-hands-on-with-heroes-and-generals/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: Hands-on with Heroes &amp; Generals</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/25/the-firing-line-hands-on-with-heroes-and-generals/">The Firing Line: Hands-on with Heroes &amp; Generals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 25 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. There are ways to leave a guild, and then there are cringe-worthy, horrifying ways to leave a guild, burn your bridges, and never, ever leave the door open for a possible return. We've all heard tales (and sometimes witnessed them firsthand!) of people leaving guilds in ways that defy humanity (leaving right in the middle of a raid is one of my favorites). Surprisingly, there are some guild departures that succeed in severing ties and are unfortunately all-too-common.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-guild-counsel/">Guild Counsel</a>, we'll look at a few ways to really do it wrong when it comes to guild departures.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/the-guild-counsel-five-ways-to-burn-bridges-with-your-guild/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Guild Counsel: Five ways to burn bridges with your guild</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/the-guild-counsel-five-ways-to-burn-bridges-with-your-guild/">The Guild Counsel: Five ways to burn bridges with your guild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 21:00:00 EST. For whatever reason, Rob Liefeld has become a mini-meme on my more meta columns of the week. He's a bad artist, yes, but as I've mentioned in the past, I don't actively dislike him. There are many people far more deserving of dislike. Case in point: <a href="http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Pat_Lee">Pat Lee</a>. I'm not going to explain in depth right here, but suffice to say that the man has history of hobbies like not paying his employees and taking credit for the work of others. <a href="http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Pat_Lee"><em>And</em> he's not a very good artist</a>.<br />
<br />
So let's move on from that meme, shall we? Great.<br />
<br />
Of course, if I'm talking about mini-memes on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Ask-Massively/">Ask Massively</a>, that must mean that it's time for this week's installment, yes? Yes. And this week, we're talking about the now almost ubiquitous case of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> project. If you've got a question you'd like to see answered in a future installment of Ask Massively, leave it in the comments below or mail it to <a href="mailto:ask@massively.com">ask@massively.com</a>. Questions may be edited slightly for clarity and/or brevity.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/ask-massively-artists-i-actually-dislike-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ask Massively: Artists I actually dislike edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/ask-massively-artists-i-actually-dislike-edition/">Ask Massively: Artists I actually dislike edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. I love spectator mode. Since the patch introducing it to <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com"><em>League of Legends</em></a>, I've had the opportunity to observe top-level players and even my own friends. If you ever wanted to learn how to play like a pro, you now have your chance. High-level games of Summoner's Rift are just a few mouse clicks away, and if you're a little mentally fatigued from playing the game, you can sit back and enjoy some high-level play. It was one of the best updates thus far for <a href="http://massively.com/tag/league-of-legends"><em>League</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Watching high-level streams or spectating high-level games can dramatically improve your game if you know what to look for. This week, we're going to cover some of the ways you can improve your game by stealing strategies and techniques from top players.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/the-summoners-guidebook-improving-your-game-through-spectator/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Summoner's Guidebook: Improving your game through spectator mode</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/the-summoners-guidebook-improving-your-game-through-spectator/">The Summoner's Guidebook: Improving your game through spectator mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. Welcome to <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em>'s</a> Overlook Motel, where the sheets are clean, the service is friendly, and there's an ominous doorway to Hell in every room. Such is the beginning of the second instanced dungeon of <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> upcoming horror-fantasy MMO, which sees players descending deep into the bowels of the underworld to put an end to a raging demonic war that's causing Hell to leak through to the real world.<br />

	I had the pleasure of joining Funcom's Tor Andersen on a guided tour of Hell Raised, the first in a series of three dungeons that take place in the fiery depths, and boy did I ever have a hell of a time (sorry). If you're interested in finding out what awaits players of <em>The Secret World</em> in the depths of Hades itself, follow along with me as I give you the ins-and-outs of surviving a confrontation in the midst of an infernal warzone.</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Raising hell in The Secret World's Hell Raised instance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/24/raising-hell-in-the-secret-worlds-hell-raised-instance/">Raising hell in The Secret World's Hell Raised instance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 10:00:00 EST. Before anyone asks in the comments section: Yes, <a href="http://www.istaria.com/"><em>Istaria</em></a> is still around. I've noticed that many players seem to think if something is out of their sight, it's out of every other player's mind too, but the truth is that there are many, many smallish and indie MMOs in existence that not only continue to do well but offer unique gameplay for anyone who might be interested. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Istaria/"><em>Istaria</em></a> is even still referred to as <em>Horizons</em> by many, even though that change was made a long, long time ago. Despite all of the outdated opinions and its status as an "older" game, interesting things are happening in the world of <em>Istaria</em>.<br />
<br />
I took some time and asked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/AmarieAncalimon/">Amarie Ancalimon</a>, Community Relations manager from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Virtrium/">Virtrium</a>, about the latest string of patches and updates. I got plenty of information back, so let's get to it!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/free-for-all-istarias-updates-community-and-future-developme/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: Istaria's updates, community, and future development</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/free-for-all-istarias-updates-community-and-future-developme/">Free for All: Istaria's updates, community, and future development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 22:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.cityofheroes.com"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> is a rarity. It's a well-established game that hasn't yet raised the level cap even once. Oh, sure, the Incarnate system is cheating a couple of extra level-like improvements out, but you hit the cap at 50 now just like you did when the game first launched. Compared to <em><a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com">World of Warcraft</a>,</em> which ups its top level biannually, the game provides a real sense of security that the cap hasn't changed. Level 50 content is still relevant because the top end of power has remained stable.<br />
<br />
Of course, there's a downside to that as well. While having a forever-rising level cap has its own issues, a firm cap has left us with an endgame that's grown bloated as only games with entrenched caps can. We're not constantly having to relearn the entire endgame so much as we're getting new widgets added on, and we're finding ourselves stuck with a growing problem of old-fashioned power creep.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/a-mild-mannered-reporter-the-growing-creeping-power/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Mild-Mannered Reporter: The growing, creeping power</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/a-mild-mannered-reporter-the-growing-creeping-power/">A Mild-Mannered Reporter: The growing, creeping power</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://riftgame.com"><em>RIFT</em></a> fans wracked their brains trying to decipher the cryptic message on the forums a few weeks ago, and it turned out they were right: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/rift/"><em>RIFT</em></a> is on the verge of seeing the arrival of three faction PvP, and the game took its first step toward that with a test session on PTS last week.<br />
<br />

You haven't steered me wrong. At least, not yet.<br />
<br />
I am pretty sure there is that nagging worry at the back of the Massively writers' minds when they give themselves over to the masses for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/choose-my-adventure">Choose My Adventure</a>. Sure, there is an element of mystery and excitement, but what if... just what if the majority manifests an evil streak and sends you careening over an embankment to your virtual doom? Or banishes you to tasks that would make you want to lobotomize yourself with your mouse -- things like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/choose-my-adventure-taking-a-right-at-paragon-city/">run Death From Below repeatedly</a>? Thankfully, you all spared me from such torture. And with this week's tour of the Mission Architect system in <em><a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/index.php">City of Heroes</a></em>, you definitely steered me right -- this is my favorite aspect of the game yet!<br />
<br />
I am glad to say that my trust in you all has not been unfounded, and I will speak on your behalf to the others. The fact is, I have enjoyed our little road trip immensely and am sad it must come to an end. So let's take one last cruise through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a> together before you drive off into the sunset with Eliot.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/">CMA: City of Heroes</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/19-1337693765_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039107"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/15-1337693759_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/6-1337693746_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039105"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/13-1337693756_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/cma-city-of-heroes/#5039109"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/17-1337693762_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/choose-my-adventure-the-last-mile/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Choose My Adventure: The last mile</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/choose-my-adventure-the-last-mile/">Choose My Adventure: The last mile</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. "How is <em><a href="http://vgplayers.station.sony.com/index.vm">Vanguard</a></em>?"<br />
<br />
If there's one question that comes up time and time again, it's that one. It experienced a launch disaster, lack of content post 35+, bugs, duping, exploits, performance issues, and the sad "parking lot layoffs," yet <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/vanguard/"><em>Vanguard: Saga of Heroes</em></a> always seems to generate buzz any time it comes up in conversation.<br />
<br />
There's a certain aura surrounding this game, and even though it languished with low subscription numbers for years, it always seems to attract attention when it's covered at Massively. There's something about <em>Vanguard</em> that kept me playing solidly well past launch and still pulls me back from time to time. With a free-to-play launch just around the corner, it seems like the perfect time to explain why I play <em>Vanguard</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/why-i-play-vanguard-saga-of-heroes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Why I Play: Vanguard, Saga of Heroes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/why-i-play-vanguard-saga-of-heroes/">Why I Play: Vanguard, Saga of Heroes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 23 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. Whenever you get really into a new hobby, it's natural to want to blab about it to anyone who drifts into your gravitational field. That's why we all talk about MMOs, right? It's also why any friends, family members, and coworkers have had to put up with excited rambling about my discovered love for Geocaching.<br />
<br />
Some of you probably know Geocaching, as it's been around for over a decade now. For those of you who haven't, it's a worldwide treasure hunt that involves over a million and a half "caches" of various sizes that are hidden and then marked with GPS coordinates. Players head to the official site or one of the open-source projects to get the coordinates and go hunting for them. There's a useful t<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=-4VFeYZTTYs">wo-minute introduction to this hobby on YouTube</a> if you're curious.<br />
<br />
I noted on our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/massively-speaking/">Massively Speaking</a> podcast that Geocaching has a lot in common with MMOs: Both encourage questing and exploration, both have treasure to be found, and both plug you into a community of adventurers. Listener Terrence heard this and send in an email with an interesting revelation that ties these two hobbies even closer together, as a game developer brought his online world to a real-world location.<br />
<br />

I pretty much went all Norn for the stress test last week. Alone (like a true Norn), I ventured to the highest, loneliest peaks of Snowden Drifts, swam in the darkest ice caves, and faced the largest metric crap-ton of <a href="http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Sons_of_Svanir">Sons of Svanir</a> imaginable.<br />
<br />
As my Necromancer slid what felt like the nine hundredth Son off of her dagger blades, I took the time to look around soak up the view; there's nothing quite like rallying three times in a fight against a whole passel of renegade Norn to make a girl really appreciate the scenery.<br />
<br />
Say what you will (and this being the Internet, many folks do) about whether or not having to zone between maps is, like, the <em>ultimate </em>sign that the game isn't truly "massively multiplayer," but each and every map we've seen so far in <a href="http://www.guildwars2.com/en/"><em>Guild Wars 2 </em></a>is packed to the brim with excitement.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/flameseeker-chronicles-touring-the-snowden-drifts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flameseeker Chronicles: Touring the Snowden Drifts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/flameseeker-chronicles-touring-the-snowden-drifts/">Flameseeker Chronicles: Touring the Snowden Drifts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. <span style="font-weight: bold;">Massively Speaking Episode </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">202 </span>is hot at the scene of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> disaster, and without hyperbole we can say that this is more tragic than Pompeii, the Titanic, and Showgirls combined. Will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling/">Curt Schilling's</a> dream team survive this financial crisis? We brought expert analyst Eliot Lefebvre on the podcast to give us his opinion.<br />

A few weeks back, I wrote an article about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/02/why-i-play-star-wars-the-old-republic/">why I played</a> <a href="http://swtor.com/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>. I drew on references from my childhood and how much Star Wars influenced my life. Although I did mention the impact of the roleplay community, I didn't talk about the roleplaying side of my MMO gameplay and how that influences my enjoyment of the game.<br />
<br />
When the quests dry up and PvP becomes stale, RP and the RP community hold me to this game. Multiple readers of the <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/hyperspace-beacon">Hyperspace Beacon</a> and fans of <a href="http://www.gamebreaker.tv/video-game-shows/star-wars-the-old-republic-video/the-republic-swtor-show/">The Republic</a> have asked how they can get involved in the roleplay in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>SWTOR</em></a>. I usually point them to one place: <a href="http://www.swtor-rp.com/">SWTOR-RP.com</a>.<br />
<br />
I could go on and on about this site and what it has done for the roleplay community, but nothing stands out more than the metagame that it's created with in-character articles. <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/the-soapbox/">The Soapbox</a> column is entirely the opinion of this week's writer and does not necessarily reflect the views of Massively as a whole. If you're afraid of opinions other than your own, you might want to skip this column. Additionally, this article is written in contrast to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/the-soapbox-game-journalism-is-not-journalism-yet/">Jef Reahard's Soapbox</a> on how video game journalists are not real journalists; Massively's writers' opinions on the subject vary.</em><br />
<br />
People have, on a few occasions, asked me for advice on becoming a game journalist. My usual response, which is only half-joking, is, "Don't."<br />
<br />
In just a handful of months, I'll be hitting my three-year anniversary for working Massively. That means I've had one of the longest tenures at the site, which is kind of staggering in my mind. I still fundamentally think of myself as one of the new kids on the block. But for better or worse, I've been doing this for a while and have a pretty good grasp of what the job entails.<br />
<br />
Of course, that's still a subject of debate. As with a lot of topics, people as a whole can't even decide on what makes someone a game journalist instead of just an enthusiast with some advertising revenue. To some people, it's not <em>even</em> a real job, just a hobby. I'm one of those people who never like to pin down an exact definition of something that's ambiguous... but I <em>can</em> define what I see as my responsibilities in this job.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/the-soapbox-what-it-means-to-be-a-game-journalist/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Soapbox: What it means to be a game journalist</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/the-soapbox-what-it-means-to-be-a-game-journalist/">The Soapbox: What it means to be a game journalist</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 22 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. Well-known <a href="http://worldofwarcraft.com/"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> guild Method secured a world first kill on <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>'s Skeleton King in inferno mode just a few days after launch but was beaten to the game's completion by a single person. <div>
	Lately I've beginning to wonder whether the wait for <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> Season Six has been as interminable for other players as it seems to have been for me. Although the past several weeks have been busy in the real-life side of things, those distractions really haven't been all that good at harboring my frustration about the wait for the new stuff as I would have liked.</div>
<br />
Season Six is being readied for a move to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-trek-online">STO's</a></em> test server, Tribble, in the next couple of weeks, according to the most recent <a href="http://www.startrekonline.com/node/3148">Ask Cryptic</a> as answered by the game's Executive Producer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dan-Stahl/">Dan Stahl</a>. The new patch will contain fleet starbases and a new fleet advancement system but not much else in the way of story-based content.<br />
<br />
That's not unexpected, however, as not one of the previous Season releases really ever contained story-based content; they've merely been game-technology pushes, and I understand that Season Six will be no different.<br />
<br />
However a couple of things have come out to the game in the past few weeks that have ruffled some hard-core Trek-fan feathers: Caitian Carriers and Ferasans.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/captain-s-log-sto-s-caitian-carriers-and-klingon-kitties/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log: STO's Caitian Carriers and Klingon Kitties</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/captain-s-log-sto-s-caitian-carriers-and-klingon-kitties/">Captain's Log: STO's Caitian Carriers and Klingon Kitties</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. If the eeriness of the truce between the Elyos and the Asmodians in <a href="http://na.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion's</em></a> new land of Sarpan wigs you out and makes you long for a good old-fashioned tussle, you can always head on over to Tiamaranta. Although the entire zone is not open for PvP, all four corners and the center are cordoned off for your <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/05/wings-over-atreia-in-defense-of-pvp-a-carebears-conversion/">opponent-bashing pleasure</a>. In fact, Tiamaranta's Eye is often hopping as both sides contest mobs and try to land one of the bosses.<br />
<br />
But even if you aren't in the mood for a bloody round of patty-cake, there is plenty of PvE and exploring to be had in this ecologically diverse land with a variety of new mobs to see (and dispatch) and new tasks to accomplish. As I mentioned <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/07/the-anvil-of-crom-four-reasons-to-return-to-age-of-conan/">last time</a>, I'm currently test-driving the EU servers. As such, my <a href="http://www.ageofconan.com"><em>Age of Conan </em></a>subscription fee is spoken for, and my US server characters are now relegated to free-to-play status. Since I'm still deciding on an EU main (I just rerolled after getting a PoM to 22), I figured I'd use this week's column to take a quick look at my veteran account through the eyes of a free-to-play customer.<br />
<br />
When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>AoC Unchained</em></a> debuted last summer, I read the <a href="http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=166952">account services matrix</a> like everyone else, but to be frank, I didn't pay it much attention because I'd always been a subscriber. In the back of my mind, I figured that anyone who's halfway serious about <em>Age of Conan</em> would want to sub up, and my experiences this weekend have only reinforced that notion.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/the-anvil-of-crom-downgrading-an-age-of-conan-account-to-f2p/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Anvil of Crom: Downgrading an Age of Conan account to F2P</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/the-anvil-of-crom-downgrading-an-age-of-conan-account-to-f2p/">The Anvil of Crom: Downgrading an Age of Conan account to F2P</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mv-guide/">MV Guide</a> is a weekly rundown of the MMO gaming events planned on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/livestream">Massively TV</a>.<br />
<br />
Every week, the Massively Stream Team logs in to play various MMOs live and in person, and we'd love for you to drop by the channel and visit. We have a combination of regular weekly games and new surprises each week, so you'll find a variety of titles to watch. During our streamed events, you can participate in the live chat, ask questions to learn about the game, or simply spend some time with Massively staff and readers. (Of course, streaming is subject to the whims of outside forces like server-side gremlins once in a while.)<br />
<br />
Follow along after the jump to see what's on this week's schedule, and let us know if there's a specific game you'd like to see streamed next week!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/mv-guide-may-21-27-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MV Guide: May 21 - 27, 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/21/mv-guide-may-21-27-2012/">MV Guide: May 21 - 27, 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 21 May 2012 09:00:00 EST. <em>At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on <a href="http://www.massively.com">Massively</a> and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or <a href="http://wow.joystiq.com">WoW Insider</a> story last week, you've come to the right post.</em><br />
<br />
We got you started in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/diablo-iii-launch-day-roundup/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> this week with our best <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/five-top-tips-for-your-first-few-days-of-diablo-iii/">tips</a>, a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/learn-the-basics-of-diablo-iii-gameplay/">guide</a> for MMO players, details on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/diablo-iii-starter-edition-lets-you-play-for-free/">starter edition</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/blizzard-uses-a-video-to-explain-what-diablo-iii-is/">videos</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/blizzard-awarding-australian-game-customers-free-copy-of-diablo/">warm fuzzies</a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/eve-talks-smack-about-diablo-iiis-login-woes/">friendly rivalries</a>. Hopefully, that gave you plenty to read during all of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/blizzard-issues-an-apology-for-the-state-of-diablo-iiis-launch/">downtime</a>. Ouch!<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, gamers everywhere looked on as the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">38 Studios</a> ship continued to founder. Early in the week, we learned that the studio might default on its state loan, leaving the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">debt</a> to Rhode Island taxpayers. A few <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/no-relief-in-sight-for-38-studios-after-emergency-meeting/">emergency meetings</a> later, 38 Studios' employees' <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/38-studios-paying-state-back-by-not-paying-employees/">paychecks are going unpaid</a> and the state governor is throwing out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">release dates</a> for the seemingly doomed MMO <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em>. But hey, flythrough <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/new-flythrough-video-previews-project-copernicus/">video</a>, right?<br />
<br />
More of the week's top MMO stories are prepped for your eyes after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/mmo-week-in-review-sanctuary/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMO Week in Review: Sanctuary</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/mmo-week-in-review-sanctuary/">MMO Week in Review: Sanctuary</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/inferno"><em>Inferno</em></a> expansion is set to launch on Tuesday May 22nd, promising a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03/25/eve-evolved-extra-revamping-pvp-in-inferno/">complete revamp</a> of <a href="http://www.eve-online.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a>'s war declaration system and a whole host of new modules. If you're in a wardec corp, you'll need to make a few adjustments to the way you operate when the patch goes live. The minimum war fee will increase to 50 million ISK even if you're declaring war on a small corporation, making very small corps less-appealing targets. The fee increases based on the number of members in the target corp, but it doesn't start increasing until around the 130-member mark. If you want to get your money's worth, you'll be best off picking a target corp with 100-150 members or selecting very high-value small targets.<br />
<br />
Be very wary of wardeccing large alliances after the patch. While the previous war system <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/04/15/eve-evolved-fixing-the-wardec-system/">swung in favour of the attacker</a>, the new system has gone to the opposite extreme. Large corps and alliances are now significantly more costly and dangerous to declare war on, especially as the defender can now call mercenaries into the war at any time. Players have complained that the increasing war costs could be abused by getting all alliance members to add alts to the corp, but this would be a logistical nightmare to apply in practice and would increase fees by only a few hundred million ISK. If alt padding becomes a problem, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp-games">CCP</a> will undoubtedly step in and revise the fee structure.<br />

In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I look at the new modules and gameplay changes coming in Tuesday's <em>Inferno</em> expansion and give some tips on preparing for the patch.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/eve-evolved-preparing-for-the-inferno-expansion/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Preparing for the Inferno expansion</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/eve-evolved-preparing-for-the-inferno-expansion/">EVE Evolved: Preparing for the Inferno expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. Here I am making myself crazy once again. Why? Why do I insist on visiting games that I know will provoke issues both physical and mental? I guess it's because lately I have been fascinated with MUDs, or multi-user-dungeons. They are better described as text-based MMOs or choose-your-own-adventure books written with thousands of other players. It's a fascinating concept, especially when you consider how dissimilar it is to today's modern, easy-to-play offerings. The ancient design of the MUD now feels fresh, so much so that I have decided to dedicate a future article about the possibility of MUDs' viability in today's three-dimensional world.<br />
<br />
I have found some good and some very bad over the last several weeks. I've also stumbled across brand-new versions of the migraines that often bother me when I concentrate way, way too hard on PC text. I have to admit that my issues do not seem that common, but it is important to look at a game from all angles, even from the angle of someone who has specific issues. <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a> has tested my patience over the last few weeks and several hours. It's also shown me some wonderful adventure and sparked my imagination.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/rise-and-shiny-batmud/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: BatMUD</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/20/rise-and-shiny-batmud/">Rise and Shiny: BatMUD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 20 May 2012 12:00:00 EST. What a week of livestreaming! We've got quite the variety and tons of hours of video to watch. What's that? You had to work and missed half of the cool streams we showed? Don't worry! I gather all of the best streams from the week's collection and list them for you right here. Still, you need <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mv-guide/">to bookmark our livestream page</a> so you can see which videos are going to be shown during the week, but if you miss any, you can check out the recap here. That's why we do it.<br />
<br />
This week we had a lot to offer. First we had good old Mike jumping into <a href="http://www.eveonline.com/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> for some space action, then into <a href="http://tera.enmasse.com/"><em>TERA</em></a> for some scantily clad combat! He then explores some of the great browser-based game <a href="http://www.drakensang.com/"><em>Drakensang Online</em></a>. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/mj-guthrie">MJ</a> brought a ton of goodies to the streaming table, goodies like a run-through in <a href="http://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, some base-jumping in <a href="http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>, a bit of hardcore survival in <em><a href="http://www.xsyon.com/">Xsyon</a>,</em> and a flight around the beautiful lands of <a href="http://truly-free.aiononline.com/"><em>Aion</em></a>. I rounded out the end by streaming some <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a>, a cool MUD that has been around since many of you have been in diapers!<br />

Generally speaking, when I celebrate anniversaries, I celebrate the point when the game actually came out in a language that I could play it. This is relevant in the case of <a href="http://www.playonline.com"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>, since the game took a year and a half to reach the shores of America (also known as "the place I live"). I learned my lesson about trying to learn a language just to muddle through a game back with <em>Final Fantasy III</em>.<br />
<br />
However, when one of our eagle-eyed readers pointed out to me the milestone that the game had hit, that made an impact because even if I couldn't understand any of the game's text back when it launched, a decade is a long time for continuous operation of <em>anything</em>. So rather than talking about the Legacy campaign as I'd planned, I think I'd rather talk about the legacy of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XI/">Final Fantasy XI</a></em> this week, including where the game has gone from its state at launch. You know, when a Black Mage could make the entire world bow and you still got attacked when riding a chocobo.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-mog-log-a-decade-of-final-fantasy-xi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: A decade of Final Fantasy XI</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-mog-log-a-decade-of-final-fantasy-xi/">The Mog Log: A decade of Final Fantasy XI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. I was watching Shrek with my kids the other day, and one of my favorite scenes is Shrek's stroll with Donkey when they first meet. Shrek tries to explain how Ogres are like onions and how both have layers. When you think about it, <a href="http://everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> is also like an onion because it has layer after layer of content and features that have stacked up over the years. In fact, some players have argued that there's almost too much to do, particularly at the lower levels.<br />
<br />
I have always loved the fact that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> has been willing to try out new ideas over the years, and some of them have been remarkably successful. But there are a few that have gotten lost in the shuffle, while others have ended up directly conflicting with later additions of content. In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">Tattered Notebook</a>, we'll peel back the onion and look at the lost and conflicting layers of <em>EQII</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-tattered-notebook-peeling-back-the-layers-of-time/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Tattered Notebook: Peeling back the layers of time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-tattered-notebook-peeling-back-the-layers-of-time/">The Tattered Notebook: Peeling back the layers of time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 May 2012 16:00:00 EST. You would think that growth and expansion is nothing but a good thing for MMOs -- after all, those are the hallmarks of the genre. But as these games get bigger, issues emerge as the developers add new zones, features, and systems. In short, maturing MMOs gravitate toward complexity, and this can have an adverse effect on the game as a whole.<br />
<br />
The problem is that there is eventually too much a brand-new player has to absorb and master, not to mention the hassle of rolling alts and having to navigate all of that content once more. If developers don't stay on top of the situation, then the game starts to lose overall cohesion and becomes a befuddling mess.<br />
<br />
With three expansions and numerous updates under its belt, <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> is venturing deep into this territory. I have friends who are leveling up for the first time and finding themselves overwhelmed with everything that needs doing as well as all the systems that are not clearly explained. So today I want to play backseat developer and talk about five ways that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a> should be streamlined for the good of all players, old and new.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-road-to-mordor-five-ways-lotro-should-be-streamlined/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: Five ways LotRO should be streamlined</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/19/the-road-to-mordor-five-ways-lotro-should-be-streamlined/">The Road to Mordor: Five ways LotRO should be streamlined</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 19 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. This week on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Betawatch/">Betawatch</a>, we say farewell to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/diablo-iii-launch-day-roundup/">Diablo III</a></em>, which (at least nominally) moved on from beta to official launch on Tuesday. Bizarrely enchanting new MOBA <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/new-moba-smashmuck-champions-fights-its-way-into-closed-beta-thi/"><em>SmashMuck Champions</em></a> takes its place, joining our list with a closed beta planned within the month. We've also added <a href="http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/6998-friends-and-family-beta-is-a-go/"><em>MechWarrior Online</em></a> to the alpha list, as reader mblakeman2001 rightly pointed out the game is in a friends-and-family beta!<br />
<br />
CCP has begun sending out <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/dust-514-handing-out-first-beta-keys-tomorrow/"><em>DUST 514</em></a> beta keys and <a href="https://secure.dust514.com/">opened registration</a>, and we've also learned that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/blade-and-soul-on-track-to-launch-in-korea-this-july/"><em>Blade &amp; Soul</em></a> will leave beta and launch in July... but only in Korea. Sadface.<br />
<br />
Finally, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/next-beta-weekend-for-the-secret-world-announced/"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> second beta weekend kicked off earlier today, but if you're not in it, you can content yourself with our hands-on with the game's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/16/hands-on-with-the-secret-worlds-combat-system/">combat</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/17/hands-on-with-the-secret-worlds-mission-system/">mission system</a>.<br />
<br />
Enjoy the entirety of our Betawatch roundup post-cut!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/betawatch-may-12-18-2012/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Betawatch: May 12 - 18, 2012</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/betawatch-may-12-18-2012/">Betawatch: May 12 - 18, 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.jagex.com/">Jagex</a>, developer of the ever-popular browser-based game <a href="http://www.runescape.com/"><em>RuneScape</em></a>, is known for its rapid development schedule. Heck, I fully expect that this article will be outdated by the time I finish its rough draft. Players of the Jagex flagship MMO can log in to find new items, places to explore, and quests to do almost weekly. I tend to poke my nose into the game several times a week, so I know that a more casual player has endless amounts of content to run through. I might level up my construction skill and then switch to something completely different. I just recently spent an afternoon playing with just the <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/bonfires">new bonfire skill</a>.<br />
<br />
Of course, those pesky developers are at it again: giving me <em>more</em> content to go through even though my highest skills hover around only the level 40 mark. This time it's the <a href="http://services.runescape.com/m=news/the-runespan">Runespan</a>, a brand-new area that helps players level runecrafting by offering them a one-stop shop that is more casual and non-competitive than the normal runecraft experience.<br />
<br />
I got the chance to call up some of the lead developers on the phone and ask not only about the Runespan but about the new FPS improvements, so be sure to check that out!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/mmobility-an-exclusive-look-at-the-runespan-in-runescape/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: An exclusive look at the Runespan in RuneScape</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/mmobility-an-exclusive-look-at-the-runespan-in-runescape/">MMObility: An exclusive look at the Runespan in RuneScape</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 19:00:00 EST. Last year, I had planned to change up the focus of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Storyboard/">Storyboard</a> a little. The "high and wide" format had been working, but I was worried that the column just wouldn't have legs if I didn't start going for more focused and narrow applications. So I spent several months working on just the right way to do more game-specific columns in here.<br />
<br />
You don't remember them, of course, because none of them was ever posted. Those several months of work did not produce a single viable column.<br />
<br />
At the capstone of the second year of Storyboard, I'm forced to basically eat crow about one of my major plans for the last year because it turns out that not only did it not work but it didn't need to work in the first place. I managed to fill up another year of columns just fine without going into great detail about one game over another, and as it turns out, I'm a lot happier with this year as a whole anyway.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/storyboard-the-second-anniversary-of-storyboard/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Storyboard: The second anniversary of Storyboard</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/storyboard-the-second-anniversary-of-storyboard/">Storyboard: The second anniversary of Storyboard</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 14:00:00 EST. Last week I talked a bit about a couple of flight sim shooters coming soon to a PC near you. One of them is <a href="http://www.worldofwarplanes.com"><em>World of Warplanes</em></a>, the followup title to <a href="http://www.wargaming.net">Wargaming.net's</a> ubiquitous <a href="http://www.worldoftanks.com"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> hit.<br />
<br />
The World War II action MMO masters are slipping the surly bonds of earth with a new lobby-based battler that's currently flying through the early phases of its global alpha test. I had a few burning questions for the devs, including specifics on the matchmaking system, progression, and the possibility of historical scenarios. Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/anton-sitnikau">Anton Sitnikau</a> was gracious enough to answer those and more, so head past the break to see what he had to say.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/the-firing-line-world-of-warplanes-producer-talks-matchmaking/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Firing Line: World of Warplanes producer talks matchmaking, progression</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/the-firing-line-world-of-warplanes-producer-talks-matchmaking/">The Firing Line: World of Warplanes producer talks matchmaking, progression</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 18 May 2012 13:00:00 EST.
