With such a monster update coming to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/landmark">Landmark</a></em>, SOE was open about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/12/12/soe-bracing-for-enormous-landmark-update/">the possibility of troubles and a delay</a>. After keeping the community updated on progress and pitfalls over the weekend, Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> confirmed it: The PvE patch is delayed until Wednesday, December 17th, at 1:00 p.m. EST. Apparently the mobs themselves are scared of the introduction of players -- as well they should be! Mobs were found all clustering in a single cave. To fully fix this, SOE has to regenerate the islands. But don't worry, builders; there is no claim wipe involved, just time. So next week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/landmark"><em>Landmark</em></a> update is big. Real big, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>. The patch includes "caves down to the world core," salvaging, crafting tweaks, transportation systems, monsters, new loot, <a href="https://forums.station.sony.com/landmark/index.php?threads/the-enormous-update-next-week.50967/">and more</a>.<br />

Georgeson also cautions that SOE "fully expects this update to be problematic." In two weeks, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/landmark">Landmark</a></em> fans will celebrate the holidays early by indulging in a content feast! On Monday, December 15th, the sandbox will get a meaty update that includes something players have craved all year: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/11/20/norrathian-notebook-landmarks-ai-will-be-a-game-changer/">PvE</a>! Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> and Senior Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Terry-Michaels/">Terry Michaels</a> announced the upcoming content extravaganza during Wednesday's <em>Landmark</em> Live stream. But mobs are not the only addition on the way; Georgeson went so far as to call last August's huge <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/08/28/norrathian-notebook-i-tasted-landmarks-combat-and-i-like-it/">PvP content patch</a> small in comparison. Along with the PvE, the December 15th patch brings the rest of the cave system (meaning all islands will now be tiered down to the core), graveyards for player resurrection (a must for when mobs chew your face off), claim vendors, and more.<br />

It's really hard not to be all giddy and excited about the introduction of AI to <a href="https://www.landmarkthegame.com/home"><em>Landmark</em></a>; it's quite literally going to be a game-changer. Some might even argue a game-maker! Only one other feature, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/08/28/norrathian-notebook-i-tasted-landmarks-combat-and-i-like-it/">combat</a>, comes close to the impact that this system will have on the sandbox. Even then, combat doesn't rival it; it complements it. In truth, it will be an early Christmas present for all those players who've been waiting as patiently as possible for this next step: Monsters are slated to be released into the wild <a href="https://forums.station.sony.com/landmark/index.php?threads/the-new-improved-blueprint-updated-11-12-14.34413/">on December 10th</a>. I am sure I mirror the sentiments of many when I say <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/08/21/soe-live-2014-the-revolutionary-intelligence-of-storybricks-ai/">the Storybricks system</a> just can't get here soon enough!<br />
<br />
Before you get your hopes up too high, know that this first iteration of the AI system does not include the much-anticipated storytelling features that players will have access to on their personal claims. Those will come in time. But that doesn't diminish the magnitude of what is coming in just a few short weeks. The introduction of mobs will truly be the big bump that makes <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/landmark">Landmark</a></em> an actual MMORPG in the eyes of the world as opposed to "just a building game," an inaccurate description the game's had a hard time shaking. After the better part of a year of being both an excellent building simulator and the sparse skeleton of an actual MMO, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/landmark"><em>Landmark</em></a> is finally starting to fill out in all sorts of pleasing ways. At this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-prime-2014">PAX Prime</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a> was gushing about the joy that's been unleashed with the recent PvP combat patch. Not only are players reveling in the slaughter of their fellow humans, but a new market for death match arenas has sprung up virtually overnight.<br />
<br />
"Players are having stupid amounts of fun with the PvP, even if they aren't typically into PvP," Georgeson noted. He said that contrary to popular belief, PvP is tougher to put into an MMO because it deals with a very unpredictable foe (a thinking human). But it's also better for the team to implement that first and home in on what makes the combat click to make PvE combat sparkle when that's added later on. More PvP customization options are on deck for the future as well.<br />

Also part of the crazy fun are the new platforming elements: teleporters, moving platforms, and "flingers." Georgeson predicted that once the playerbase gets a handle on what these elements can do and how they can be chained together, the game will grow several orders of magnitude wilder.<br />

From here, <em>Landmark's</em> progress will only speed up. The team is going to focus on bug fixes and polishing the new systems while listening to what the players think about the new toys. One thing that the devs have to do is separate ideas that are possible (such as allowing players to order voxel structures to obey the laws of physics) from those that are not (such as allowing players to create enemy creature models). If you've been holding back from building in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/landmark"><em>Landmark</em></a> because of the impending claim wipe when caves are introduced, feel free to dig in now.<br />

There's no universal wipe!<br />

Director of Development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> expounded on the <a href="https://twitter.com/DaveGeorgeson/status/471683409090060289">change in plans</a> during last night's <em>Landmark</em> Live. "We found a way by which we do not have to wipe all the claims when we put up the cave entrances," he said. If you have a claim placed where the caverns end up, it will be packed in a template for you to use elsewhere. Georgeson went on to assure players that there are only a few entrances to these caves on each island, so very few players will be displaced.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/">EverQuest</a></em> Franchise Lead <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> critted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/landmark"><em>Landmark</em></a> testers <a href="https://forums.station.sony.com/landmark/index.php?threads/the-new-improved-blueprint-4-29-14.34413/">with a wall of text</a> late last night, updating the community on the plans for the game's features rollout over the next four months. To sum up the huge list:

<ul>
	<li><strong>Early May: </strong>The addition of oceans, cave networks, Player Studio, and some quick fixes to help new players catch up such as a progression path diagram and the placement of basic crafting tables at the Hub.</li>
	<li><strong>Late May:</strong> The team will add customer service tools, "crafting 2.0," treasure chests (and loot!), voice chat, underwater effects, map improvements, a minimap, and lots more music from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeremy-soule/">Jeremy Soule</a>.</li>
	<li><strong>June:</strong> June will see a personal interface for Player Studio put in, the advent of glass and water as a building material, a revamp to the claim system, improved character creation, resource swapping, a death system, shields, recipe books, achievements, "chat 2.0," the fog of war on the map, and a "surprise feature."</li>
	<li><strong>July:</strong> By the middle of summer, <em>Landmark </em>will introduce ensemble outfit pieces, the combat system, pathing, craftable abilities, physics, monsters, SOEmote, and bodies of water other than oceans.</li>
	<li><strong>August:</strong> The last month on the blueprint will contain (for now) building tool refinements, mounts, and dynamic water.</li>

While last weekend saw a surprising lack of noteworthy announcements at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAXEast/">PAX East 2014</a>, one panel gathered several industry veterans to answer a not-so-simple question: How does the future look for the MMO industry as a whole? The panel, titled Next Generation MMO Games: What's Next for Multiplayer Trends?, featured <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Ian-Fisher/">Ian Fisher</a> (Director of Design, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Robot-Entertainment/">Robot Entertainment</a>), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Stephen-Frost/">Stephen Frost</a> (Game Design Producer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine</a>), <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dave-Georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> (Director of Development, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a>), Kjartan Pierre Emilsson (Principal Game Designer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ccp">CCP</a>), and Stephen Johnston (President, Guild Launch) in a roundtable discussion about where MMOs have been and where they're headed. We've all seen what gamers are capable of making in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Minecraft/">Minecraft</a></em>. A quick search online turns up replicas of everything imaginable, sublime works of art, even <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9c0vkf8pm8">inexplicable cat fountains</a>. According to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dave-Georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a>, this is exactly what led to the creation of <a href="https://www.landmarkthegame.com/home"><em>Landmark</em></a>, and by his own admission the development team owes Notch a Christmas card solely because of that. Without that limitation, <em>Landmark</em> wouldn't be what it is now, nor would it be developing into what it will eventually be.<br />
<br />
At this year's PAX East, Georgeson explained to me that as much fun as <em>Minecraft</em> is, it lacks something crucial: a way for players to see all of these creations. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Landmark/">Landmark</a></em>, by contrast, is designed from the ground up not just to allow that sort of interaction but to actively encourage it. And that's only the beginning; the game's current status as a sort of super-<em>Minecraft</em> is the simplest core expression of the game's promise. IGN has published <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/04/02/soes-georgeson-on-eq-eqii-and-city-of-heroes/">yet</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/04/02/landmarks-georgeson-hugely-interested-in-vr-project-morpheus/">another</a> <a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/04/03/everquest-dev-gamers-should-want-all-mmos-to-be-free-to-play">article</a> stemming from its recent interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise development director says that the free-to-play business model is a no-brainer from a gamer's perspective.<br />

"I think that free-to-play is the way that gamers should want their MMOs to be," Georgeson explains, "and the reason I think that is that if we don't do a really good job and we don't entertain the player, we don't make a dime."<br />

Georgeson's vehement defense of F2P is interesting in terms of its timing, as this week sees the launch of one of the year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-elder-scrolls-online">big-budget subscription-only</a> titles, with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar">another to follow</a> in June. Georgeson maintains that game developers are effectively street performers. "We go out there and sing and dance and if we do a good job, people throw coins into the hat," he says. "And I think that's the way games should be, because paying $60 up front to take a gamble on whether the game is good or not? IGN has released another snippet of its recent interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise lead <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>. Earlier today Georgeson talked up his enthusiasm for virtual reality, while this latest cut focuses on <em>EverQuest</em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-heroes"><em>City of Heroes</em></a>.<br />

Yeah, you read that right, as apparently the late great superhero title was one of Georgeson's personal faves. "Everybody who plays any MMO never wants it to die," he says. "You invest a little bit of your soul in an MMO, you spend a lot of time in it and so on and so forth, so of course you never want one of them to die."<br />

With free-to-play titles, you have to wonder how exactly the game will stay afloat monetarily. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/">EverQuest Next Landmark's</a></em> Director of Development, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>, took the guesswork out of figuring out what will be available for sale by revealing the five phases of the upcoming sandbox's proposed business strategy.<br />
<br />
Players are already familiar with the first phase going on now, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/11/23/the-tattered-notebook-the-eqn-landmark-founders-pack-fallout/">Founders Packs</a>, and are expecting the advent of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Player-Studio/">Player Studio</a>, which is slated for early closed beta. The two phases in between, however, might be the most controversial; they involve selling character outfits, resources, and shortcut methods for features. Anticipating player concern, Georgeson explained that the current resource progression in alpha is not planned for the game proper; items will soon only need handfuls of resources to make tools. For feature shortcuts, he gives the example of paying upkeep, renting market stalls, or gaining the effects of a potion without physically crafting the potion first. The final phase at the end of closed beta will involve a large chunk of "bigger-ticket items like cosmetic pets, sound/music packs for your claims, name/gender changes, extra claim flags, and more."<br />

As with all announcements, the devs want to hear your feedback so the plan can be adapted accordingly. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next-landmark/"><em>EverQuest Next Landmark</em></a> Director of Development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a> <a href="https://forums.station.sony.com/eqnlandmark/index.php?threads/eqnl-roadmap.18810/">has posted a roadmap for the title's next few months last night</a>, divvying up the upcoming features into three phases that are independent of alpha and beta labels.<br />
<br />
In the first phase that's coming in "the next few weeks," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> will be adding in player ratings for claims, key mapping, voice chat, groups and grouping bonuses, social media integration, quick travel options, better building tools, underground caves, claim expansions, required upkeep for claims, and an improved chat system that includes links for map waypoints.<br />
<br />
Phase two will happen about four weeks later, with guilds, SOEmote, naming freedom, mini-hubs, health, dying, basic combat, buffs, plant harvesting, water, a tree harvesting revamp, a journal system, achivements, salvage, treasure chests, claim storage, and more movement options including flying.<br />
<br />
SOE was a little more vague about the third phase, saying that it will include PvP, advanced combat, more physics, and better AI.<br />

<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony-online-entertainment/">Sony Online Entertainment</a> director of development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> has posted a new update over on the official <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next-landmark/"><em>EverQuest Next Landmark</em></a> forum outlining the team's plans for moving forward and asking players for opinions on possible upcoming build contests. In the post, Georgeson notes that SOE's first order of business with <em>Landmark </em>is focusing on communications, rating systems, and ways for players to better cooperate with one another. Teams will also be working on systems like combat, AI, and water.<br />
<br />
Additionally, Georgeson revealed that SOE is going to start running <em>Landmark </em>building contests. The first contest revolves around designing a landmark for island hubs, but future contests are left up to a poll in the post. Choices include homages to buildings in previous <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest/">EverQuest</a> games, new architecture for Norrath, and genre-specific contests that center on modern, sci-fi, or fantasy designs.<br />

You might have heard a wee bit about this little thing called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next-landmark"><em>EverQuest Next Landmark</em></a> this past weekend. With the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/02/01/eqn-landmark-lifts-alpha-nda/">surprise dropping of the NDA</a> not even a full day after the alpha was launched, it's been the talk of MMO town. Along with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/02/03/my-first-two-hours-in-eqn-landmark/">first impressions</a> pieces, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/02/03/the-stream-team-get-a-glimpse-of-eqn-landmarks-alpha/">livestreams</a>, and plenty of news, there is a quite a cacophony of chatter about the new sandbox on everything from forums to Twitter. And yet that's still not enough, so we grabbed Director of Development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> to learn even more.<br />

Although currently busy with a slew of <em>EQN Landmark</em> work (if you doubt that, follow him on Twitter), Georgeson sat down with me to talk a bit about the game's alpha and the plans moving forward, revealing some promising tidbits about incoming crafting specializations, fast travel options, landownership, and the upcoming alpha roadmap. How's the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>Landmark</em></a> alpha going? Pretty well, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>. Earlier this evening Georgeson posted a lengthy state-of-the-alpha update on the <a href="https://forums.station.sony.com/eqnlandmark/index.php?threads/state-of-the-alpha-2-3-14.9420/">game's forums</a> (you'll need to be logged in with your SOE account to view the link). In it, he says that developers are currently working on server stability, logout position issues, and template fixes. He also mentions art team deliverables like new biomes, character customizations, and props.<br />
<br />
Finally, Georgeson announced on Twitter that Landmark will only support 64-bit operating systems going forward. He explains why in the aforementioned forum post.<br />

"To prevent our voxel database from crashing under load, we are converting it to 64-bit processes. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a>, who must be the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next-landmark/">busiest man</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next">on Earth</a> right now, has penned a director's letter for fans of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> explaining how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">Sony Online Entertainment</a> plans to change the way in which it delivers new content to the nine-year-old game. According to Georgeson, the fan response to SOE's current method of content delivery (three big updates, one expansion, and a bunch of smaller stuff in between) was a resounding "meh," so the studio is looking to shake things up.<br />
<br />
Future content for <em>EverQuest II</em> will now work like this: Feature refinements, short adventures, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holiday-events/">holiday events</a>, and other small content will launch every week. Every month, a bigger addition will be made, such as an overhaul an existing dungeon, the addition of a series of quests, or the creation of a new world event. All other resources will be invested into developing full expansions for the game, which are still slotted for annual releases.<br />
<br />
Georgeson promises that SOE is locked into the new schedule, saying, "Yes, we mean it. There's simply no denying that 2014 will be pretty significant for the franchise; one game turns 15, another turns 10, and the newest turns 0. Did you know that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> has PvP? It does! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> is even working on improvements for it as we speak! This startling revelation comes to us from the <a href="https://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/index.php?threads/thank-you.544627/#post-6026430">EQII forums</a> -- via EQ2Wire -- where someone posted a private email correspondence between franchise director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a> and a player named Pawder.<br />
<br />
Georgeson starts off by laying a little bit of his PvP cred on the table. He helped develop the original <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside"><em>PlanetSide</em></a>, see, as well as <em>Tribes 2</em> and some of the <em>MechWarrior</em> games. He goes on to say that <em>EQII</em> PvP procs are being removed, and he also says that the game's PvP battleground matchmaker will see improvements "later this year." Finally, Georgeson mentions that the Nagafen PvP server has suffered a population drain since the advent of battlegrounds -- basically, players want their PvP immediately rather than having to hunt through zones to find it.<br />
<br />
"The fact of the matter is <em>EQII</em> still has a very strong PvP userbase," Georgeson explains. "They're just not always on Nagafen anymore. They tended to drift to other servers and they play BGs most of the time now when they desire PvP. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> has released an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> producer's letter for the month of November. Well, it's actually more of a video than a letter, but you get the idea. Your host is director of development <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>, and he spends the clip's three-minute running time discussing <em>Landmark</em> and the recently concluded press tour.<br />
<br />
Georgeson says the tour was the first time that people outside of the dev team had a chance to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/11/11/hands-on-with-eq-next-landmark-building-my-castle-of-dreams/">lay hands on the product</a>, and the result was plenty of useful feedback. Georgeson also teases some new lore that's on the way, but I won't spoil it for you here. When presented with the opportunity to get my hands on <a href="https://www.eqnlandmark.com/"><em>EverQuest Next Landmark</em></a> and build something for myself, I leaped at the chance. Who hasn't been sitting back, eagerly awaiting the moment he could dive into the wilds of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next-landmark"><em>Landmark</em></a> and let his creativity run rampant? As one half of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">Some Assembly Required</a> team, I knew it would be no great sacrifice to try out this upcoming beacon of player-generated-content.<br />
<br />
And man, was it worth it! I met with <em>EverQuest</em> Franchise Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> to talk shop and check out <em>Landmark's</em> tools in my own personal hands-on pre-alpha experience. Instead of just gazing longingly at a screen while watching a demonstration, I got to test drive all the various building tools as I obsessively constructed my own amethyst castle. The only real problem I ran into was that my time ended all too soon, and now I must wait until <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/11/11/everquest-next-landmark-founders-packs-alpha-announced/">February for the alpha</a> to play again.<br />
<br />
So is it better to have built and lost than never to have built at all? I may have to get back to you on that when -- and if -- my withdrawals subside. Oh, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson</a>, you coy rascal! What the heck does <a href="https://twitter.com/DaveGeorgeson/status/398872832379084800">11 11 11 11</a> mean? Georgeson, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> franchise director and a prominent figure in the development of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>, published the cryptic string of characters earlier this afternoon on his personal Twitter account.<br />
<br />
<em>EQN's</em> fan community of course hazarded a few guesses which ranged from a beta announcement at 11:11 a.m. on November 11th to some sort of binary code.<br />
<br />
Georgeson isn't talking, though, other than a follow-up tweet that <a href="https://twitter.com/DaveGeorgeson/status/398883145413443584">shot down the beta rumor</a>. Although we knew that combat was going to be present in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest-next-landmark/">EverQuest Next Landmark</a></em> in some capacity (Franchise Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> mentioned <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/17/the-tattered-notebook-quips-quotes-and-eq-next-tidbits-from-s/">getting leather for crafting</a> way back at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe-live-2013/">SOE Live</a>), no actual details were known. Now, thanks to <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/danieltack/2013/10/02/everquest-next-landmark-is-much-more-than-a-world-builder/">a Forbes interview</a> with Georgeson we know that the combat system will have the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/05/soe-live-2013-everquest-nexts-mechanics-and-more/">same mechanics</a> as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>. The two games will also share the same emergent AI system, although Georgeson said that <em>Landmark</em> may not use it in the exact same way.<br />
<br />
So if the two games are sharing so many things, what is the point of having two separate full-fledged MMORPGs? Georgeson answered by stating,

By now you have probably heard that <a href="https://www.everquest2.com"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> is launching a little thing called <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/09/23/get-your-free-everquest-ii-heroic-character-starting-october-1/">Heroic Characters today</a>; after all, this little thing is kind of a <em>big</em> deal. How often do players get the chance to jump in and experience a game as a permanent high-level character instead of just being teased with one during a brief tutorial? And for two weeks this possibility is completely free to each and every person, be they new players or veterans.<br />
<br />
Whether you are eagerly awaiting your chance to jump (back) into Norrath and see what things are like in the newest story arcs or you're eyeing the sudden influx of high level newbs with trepidation, there's no denying that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii">EQ II</a></em> is going through a fundamental shift today. This patch has the ability to change the landscape of play in the game more so than anything since the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/the-tattered-notebook-discovery-arrives/">free-to-play conversion</a>. When you couple these new Heroic Characters with the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/09/27/soe-removing-everquest-iis-f2p-item-restrictions/">lifting of item restrictions</a>, there are literally no more gates barring people from joining and experiencing most of what the game has to offer.<br />

In anticipation of this big change, I had the opportunity to sit down with Franchise Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> and Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/holly-longdale">Holly Longdale</a> to talk Heroic Character shop, and they shed more light on this upcoming experience. Back when <a href="https://www.everquestnext.com/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/02/soe-live-2013-everquest-next-explained/"><em>EverQuest Landmark</em></a> were <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/02/soe-live-2013-everquest-next-explained/">announced</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE</a> President <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-smedley/">John Smedley</a> made it clear that the two games were henceforth in "open development." That meant that the company would be soliciting feedback and opinions from players about myriad design decisions for the two games.<br />
<br />
Since then, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQ Next</em></a> devs have thrown out new questions each week for players to vote on and discuss. Utilizing polls and forum discussions in a special section of the main site labeled Round Table, important topics like bearded female dwarves and armor appearance customization are delved into and player desires and feedback are gathered. After collecting the data, the devs respond, sometimes in video form.<br />

Today, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook">The Tattered Notebook</a> is going to round up all those roundtables, giving you a summary of which way the community is leaning on these different topics as well as the dev input. I'll even throw in snippets of their opinions as well! It's early on the first day of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-Prime-2013/">PAX Prime</a> and I haven't had my coffee yet. The coffee is necessary to catch me up to the boundless enthusiasm of the ponytailed dev who sits across from me gesticulating wildly. With each wave of the hand a new image pops on the large monitor to the right of us, showing off another captivating snapshot of a fantasy world and its potential inhabitants.<br />
<br />
It's one thing to watch <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson/">Dave Georgeson</a> be giddy about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> and its slightly-more-sandbox-than-thou <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/EverQuest-Next-Landmark/">EverQuest Next Landmark</a> </em>from afar. It's another thing to be close enough that his hand gestures threaten my full cup of joe. And either near or far, it's hard not to ride the wave of enthusiasm to the shores of hype, hopes, and dreams.<br />
<br />
Georgeson and company are strongly pushing <em>EverQuest Next Landmark</em> these days, possibly because it's coming out in a couple of months and possibly because it's a strange game to explain to players. Just what is it? Sandbox? MMO? Real estate simulator? Parkour paradise? Capitalistic haven for up-and-coming designers? Doom! Gloom! Kaboom!<br />

As is wont to happen, the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/28/soe-suffers-a-reduction-in-workforce/">recent news</a> about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE's</a> layoffs sparked a flurry of speculation about the fate of the various games in the studio's portfolio. In fact, it's not terribly unlike the the speculation after <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/02/soe-live-2013-everquest-next-explained/">the unveiling</a> of <em><a href="https://www.everquestnext.com/">EverQuest Next</a></em>. Will <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EQ Next</em></a>/SOE layoffs kill off my beloved *insert game title here*? In the case of <a href="https://www.everquest2.com/"><em>EverQuest II</em></a>, I feel fairly confident that the answer is a resounding no. I've even <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/07/20/tattered-notebook-speculations-last-stand-for-everquest-next/">said as much</a> before. Unfortunately, I can't confidently say the same for other titles, even though I'm pulling for the success of them all.<br />

It's official: I survived <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe-live">SOE Live</a>! (I'd have included "with my sanity intact," but we all know I didn't have any going into it.) It's not that I seriously doubted this conclusion; I did successfully survive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/10/some-assembly-required-player-generated-content-at-soe-live/">my inaugural visit</a> after all. But with so much to see and hear and do, there was bound to be a casualty of some sort. In this case, it was sleep. Even sacrificing that, there was still no way to experience it all -- and I tried!<br />
<br />
If you haven't been to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE's</a> annual "family reunion" in a while, you might not realize just how big it has grown. And adding <a href="https://www.everquestnext.com/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> and <a href="https://www.everquestnext.com/about-landmark"><em>EverQuest Next Landmark</em></a> to the already expanded portfolio of games represented made for more news than could reasonably be condensed into nice little packages. That's where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-tattered-notebook/">The Tattered Notebook</a> comes in! I'd like to open today's column with my favorite quote from <a href="http://www.soe.com"><em>SOE's</em></a> <a href="http://www.everquestnext.com"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a> reveal:<br />

"Enough is enough. Enough of the same game already. It's time to get some new ideas into the genre."<br />
<br />
Now, you would think that this sort of unambiguous mission statement would be picked up on and understood by everyone who has even a passing interest in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>. After all, the quote rolled off franchise director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-georgeson">Dave Georgeson's</a> tongue during the first two minutes of the <em>EQN</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/02/soe-live-2013-everquest-next-explained/">reveal speech</a>. Once again, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe-live">SOE Live</a> has come to a close, but with all the news about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/"><em>EverQuest Next</em></a>, there are several questions left unanswered, particularly when it comes to the social side of gameplay. Each week here, we look at questions related to guild leadership, but over the years, the design process of MMOs has had as much a role as anything in how guild leaders make management decisions.<br />
