<em>As MMO players, we know all about being geeks; we're the geekiest video gamers around! Join in the fun today as we celebrate <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Geek-Week">Google's Geek Week</a> with a series of MMO-flavored videos to introduce fellow geeks to our favorite games: Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, The Secret World, and more!</em><br />
<br />
Despite its struggles since launch, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> retains a mighty playerbase. In fact, its subscription numbers easily place it in the top five MMOs! No doubt many players stick with the game because of its incredible and iconic vistas and locations. So why not live vicariously through our <em>SWTOR</em> columnist and virtually visit some of those destinations in a humorous flythrough recorded especially for Geek Week? Visit the haunted halls of the Sith Dark Temple on Dromund Kaas, tour the ruins of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and explore the war-torn wastes of Ilum. But whatever you do, don't mention what happens on the Bounty Hunter's D5-Mantis starship. We're still trying to block that from our minds.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/08/massively-does-geek-week-take-a-scenic-tour-of-star-wars-the-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively does Geek Week: Take a scenic tour of SWTOR</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/08/massively-does-geek-week-take-a-scenic-tour-of-star-wars-the-o/">Massively does Geek Week: Take a scenic tour of SWTOR</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 08 Aug 2013 09:30:00 EST. Many of my friends in gaming media have speculated as to why <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> has allowed some media outlets to report on the heavily veiled <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> beta, but frankly, I don't care. It doesn't matter to me that <a href="http://us.battle.net/blizzcon/en/?-">BlizzCon</a> happens to be tomorrow or that there is a possible connection between the start of that event and the lift of this embargo. All I really care about is that I can finally tell you about actual gameplay for this new Star Wars MMO that I've been personally following for over three years now. However, it will be extremely difficult to contain all my experience of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> within the confines of this one article. However, I will do my darnedest.<br />
<br />
Over the past couple of weeks, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> allowed us access to the Republic side of this highly anticipated MMO and pretty much set us free. We can report on nearly every gameplay aspect within the first two planets. Two weeks -- that's enough time for me to run more than one class! And that's exactly what I did. Originally, I wanted to run through two classes that weren't going to affect me much when the game goes live. I accomplished this goal with the Jedi Consular. However, when I started to play the Smuggler class, I just could not stop. I was completely engaged in the story.<br />
<br />
Jump past the break and I'll tell you all about that -- and more.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/20/lifting-the-beta-curtain-larrys-hands-on-with-swtors-beta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lifting the beta curtain: Larry's hands-on with SWTOR's beta</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/20/lifting-the-beta-curtain-larrys-hands-on-with-swtors-beta/">Lifting the beta curtain: Larry's hands-on with SWTOR's beta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 20 Oct 2011 12:00:00 EST. A hyperspace beacon in Star Wars lore guides a space traveler from one safe lightspeed jump to the next. Basically, a nav computer communicates with a hyperspace beacon, requesting jump points to its intended destination, and the hyperspace beacon, being in contact with other hyperspace beacons, replies with the fastest route to that star system. Explorers, like Gav Daragon, would take risky jumps in directions beacons didn't point to. That is how they found Korriban.<br />
<br />
By the time period of Star Wars: A New Hope, hyperspace beacons were no longer in service. However, we know for certain that less than 300 years before <em><a href="http://swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a>, </em>hyperspace beacons were still in use. Since technology appears to advance quite slowly, I can only assume that they are still used in some capacity during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a>.<br />
<br />
As evident by the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/30/explore-the-old-republics-galaxy-far-far-away-in-3-d/">galaxy map</a> that <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a> launched this past Friday, the worlds of this time period are strongly divided into territories. The planets of the movies appeared to be united under one banner (although that's not entirely accurate). What I'd like to do today is give you a little tour of the galaxy, comparing this map to something you may be a bit more familiar with: the Star Wars movies. So strap yourself in, kid -- we gotta make the jump to hyperspace!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/hyperspace-beacon-hyperspace-beacons/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Hyperspace... beacons</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/hyperspace-beacon-hyperspace-beacons/">Hyperspace Beacon: Hyperspace... beacons</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 17:00:00 EST. When I started the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/20/hyperspace-beacon-holocron-files-pureblood-sith/">Holocron Files</a> last week, it slipped my mind that I have been doing this column for a year and a half and that not everyone has been following every issue. When I wrote about the Pureblood Sith, it was really meant to be a refresher course, not a comprehensive chronicle. It's extremely difficult to capture the full history of a species in about a thousand words. That being said, I understand that not everyone has a perspective on the Star Wars timeline, especially the time leading up to <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a>.<br />
<br />
I don't think it's any secret that <a href="http://Bioware.com">BioWare</a> stories are extremely deep, and Lead Writer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Erickson/">Daniel Erickson</a> has a nerdgasm every time someone interviews him about Star Wars history. The established history leading up to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>TOR</em></a> will play a major role in the story that unfolds in the game, otherwise the development team would not have had the wherewithal to create the timeline videos for the website.<br />
<br />
Following the break, I would like to set you up for future, more comprehensive articles about the Star Wars lore. Although this column is certainly not exclusively about lore, when I bring up another Holocron File, I want reader to have a decent understanding of when these events fall in Star Wars history. So rev up your time machine to 88 miles per hour! This <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hyperspace-beacon/">Hyperspace Beacon</a> is about to go back in time -- way back!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/hyperspace-beacon-timeline/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: Timeline</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/27/hyperspace-beacon-timeline/">Hyperspace Beacon: Timeline</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 20:00:00 EST. It's Friday again. That means the community team at <a href="http://Bioware.com">BioWare</a> has been working frantically all week to give you a tidbit of <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> that will leave you satisfied yet still aching for more. With the release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/hands-on-with-swtors-jedi-knight-on-tython/">Jedi and Tython impressions</a> earlier this week, it was going to be hard to top the plethora of information streaming from that event. However, the team has come very close.<br />
<br />
We start with the monthly Friday update in which developers answer player questions: <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20101217">Studio Insider</a>. On top of the behind the scenes article about building Coruscant by World Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/eric-young/">Eric Young</a>, Director of Production <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dallas-dickinson/">Dallas Dickinson</a> answered <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20101217#cqa">10 fan questions</a>. The questions that stood out to this reporter were the PvP related questions, and the interesting one was a question about leveling with just PvP. Dickinson stated, "<em>We're big fans of multiple gameplay paths -- we don't want to force you to do one thing to advance. That means you'll level up whether you're playing PvE or PvP.</em>"<br />
<br />
The teaser of information doesn't stop there. <a href="http://starwars.com">The Official Star Wars website</a> released <a href="http://starwars.com/media/general/Deceived_chapter_2.pdf">chapter two</a> of <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Deceived">Deceived</a>, the novel by <a href="http://paulskemp.com/">Paul S. Kemp</a>, to the public. This portion of the book leads the reader through Darth Malgus' attack on the Jedi Temple as seen in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/deceived-cinematic-trailer">trailer</a>. If the book intrigues you, Massively was able to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/hands-on-with-swtors-next-book-deceived/">review an advanced copy</a> of the book, and <a href="http://cdn-www.swtor.com/sites/all/files/en/na/TOR_Deceived_Chapter_1.pdf">chapter one is also available</a> for your <em>personal</em> review.<br />

"<em>Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future</em>," were Yoda's words from The Empire Strikes Back, but contrary to the Jedi Master's belief, most of the time there are clues to what our future holds. Like the smell right before a rain storm, or little ticks of involuntary action that give away when someone is bluffing in poker, or that face your mother used to give you which said you were in trouble, clues to what the future holds are everywhere. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is no exception. Clues to what the game holds are hidden all over its website.<br />
<br />
Alyssa Gobelle is the web designer for <em>SWTOR</em>. She has done a beautiful job of constructing a site that is entertaining as well as interesting to look at. Although the busy lettering, Aurebesh, entices the eyes, it also gives away secrets to the game. In April, Gobelle was <a href="http://www.holonetproject.net/2010/04/holonet-project-alyssa-gobelle.html">interviewed by the Holonet Project</a> fan site, where she revealed that the messages are totally intentional: "<em>When they first brought me on, our first major task was to design the HoloNet. We wanted the HoloNet's voice to be as much 'within the lore of the game' as possible so we planned to add some generic Aurebesh to start. But we also wanted to add some hidden teases and notes for you guys to devour and ponder upon and play with. Give some more fuel to the speculation festivities.</em>"<br />
<br />
Continue after the break to find out what some of these "hidden teases" are. Perhaps you can help me figure out what the rest of them mean.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/02/hyperspace-beacon-swtors-hidden-messages/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's hidden messages</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/08/02/hyperspace-beacon-swtors-hidden-messages/">Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR's hidden messages</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 13:00:00 EST. What happens in <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/planets/nar-shaddaa">Nar Shaddaa</a> stays in Nar Shaddaa. How many unique locations can you fit in one one game? Well, according to the developers at <a href="http://bioware.com">BioWare</a>, one more. <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> is now up to <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/planets">14 planets</a> with the addition of this center for the criminal underworld: Nar Shaddaa. This city planet is the evil twin to <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/planets/coruscant">Coruscant</a> in that it is completely covered in city sprawl. Obi Wan called <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mos_Eisley">Mos Eisley</a> a wretched hive of scum and villainy -- which is true -- but when compared to Nar Shaddaa, it is saintly.<br />
<br />
Besides being the apex destitute, this is neutral ground for the current war; the Republic and Empire are equally hated. The only war that matters on Nar Shaddaa is the one between the two mob-like corporate giants. On this moon of Hutta, the <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Hutt_Cartel">Hutt Cartel</a> finds its greatest -- and possibly its only -- rival in all the galaxy: <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/The_Exchange">the Exchange</a>. Where will you fit in this futuristic turf war? Maybe your place is on the side that pays the most credits. But whichever side you choose, neither can be trusted, so trust only in yourself.<br />
<br />
It's not just business as usual on Nar Shaddaa. When planning your Star Wars vacation, be sure to stop by the literal <em>world</em> of entertainment.<br />
<br />

<em>The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/hyperspace-beacon/">Hyperspace Beacon</a> is a weekly guide and discussion by Larry Everett about the yet-to-be-released game </em><a href="http://www.swtor.com/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a>.<br />
<br />
We have been teased, taunted, and tantalized this week before the <a href="http://www.e3expo.com/">Electronic Entertainment Expo</a>, so much so <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> fans don't know topsy from turvy. In this Hyperspace Beacon, released just hours before <a href="http://www.ea.com/">Electronic Arts</a>' <a href="http://www.ea.com/1/e3">press conference</a> at the Expo, I will hopefully give you the lowdown on the latest news and perhaps help you appreciate the magnitude of the startling reveals. On the surface they may seem like hyped-up teases with very little to latch on to, but I believe they have exposed quite a bit.<br />
<br />
As Massively reporters packed their bags to head to Los Angeles, <a href="http://www.bioware.com">Bioware</a> did not stop tossing tidbits at its diligent disciples. First, we were treated with a <a href="http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6265070/star-wars-the-old-republic-exclusive-hands-on-bounty-hunter-trooper-imperial-agent-smuggler-sith-inquisitor-and-sith-warrior">hands-on walkthrough from Gamespot</a> detailing the beginning quest for most of the starting classes. Twi'leks and chiss were cited as playable species in this revealing report. Also, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/95?ch=1&amp;sd=1">Gametrailers.com</a> probed the path behind producing an exciting E3 trailer. Besides touring <a href="http://www.blur.com/">Blur</a> studios, the interview taunted us with a brief look into this year's animated short story.<br />
<br />
Continue on after the break to find more insight into the extravagant extraterrestrial exhibition that is this year's E3.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/hyperspace-beacon-e3-extravagant-extraterrestrial-exhibition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hyperspace Beacon: E3 -- extravagant extraterrestrial exhibition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/hyperspace-beacon-e3-extravagant-extraterrestrial-exhibition/">Hyperspace Beacon: E3 -- extravagant extraterrestrial exhibition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 14 Jun 2010 12:00:00 EST. No, really, think about it. Think about the scope involved, the huge numbers of people involved, the sheer scale of any kind of project or even the most humble buildings. It's a massively dwarfing concept, which makes it all the more interesting to see the latest trailer for <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> which discusses <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/making-coruscant">the creation of Coruscant</a>, capital of the Republic and home to a single, massive city.<br /><br />In the trailer, the designers mention many of the issues that they faced with designing the planet, chief among them the absolute lack of any terrain on the planet due to its nature and the difficulty of relating it to real-life places and things. It also discusses the events that lead into the beginning of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> -- the Sith sacking of Coruscant that leaves some portions of the planet still damaged and rebuilding. Coruscant is being set up to help establish the role of the Republic and the Jedi in the larger galaxy, a symbol of everything positive in the galaxy. We also see still more vistas of the city, which retain the polish that Bioware has been long known for.<br /><br />On the very real chance you're hungry for more visions of the universe after the trailer, the <a href="http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomic/act2#/22/">latest installment</a> of <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20091009_002">Threat of Peace</a> has also been added to the site. But that's only enough to whet our appetites for what's shaping up to be a truly massive and immersive game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/10/10/star-wars-the-old-republic-fills-up-the-city-planet/">Star Wars: The Old Republic fills up the city planet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 10 Oct 2009 12:00:00 EST. So maybe you missed out on seeing the glorious video reveal of Coruscant at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pax-2009">PAX</a> this year. No worries, because <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare">BioWare's</a> been kind enough to release <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20090911_002">a high quality copy</a> of the video into the wilds of the internet. We've posted it after the break in case you'd like to simple jump right into it.<br /><br />There's more news beyond the video being available on the game's official website, though, such as a bevy of very cool concept art that should entice any <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a> fan for several minutes bare minimum -- some of us may spend longer amounts of time staring.<br /><br />None of this is a big reveal, but that's perfectly understandable given the team's presence at PAX last weekend. So what about next weekend? Well, next weekend they'd better deliver or else we'll have to uh- well we'll just be sad if they don't, but it'll be a really vicious sadness that sends chills down spines!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/13/swtors-coruscant-artwork-and-pax-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>SWTOR's Coruscant artwork and PAX video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/09/13/swtors-coruscant-artwork-and-pax-video/">SWTOR's Coruscant artwork and PAX video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 13 Sep 2009 16:00:00 EST. The question has been asked whether or not a trailer which contains absolutely no gameplay footage <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/is-swtor-hype-peaking-too-early/">should be producing that sort of hype</a>, but that trailer wasn't all that we saw of the upcoming MMORPG at E3. A panel dedicated to The Old Republic had much more to say.<br /><br />The panel opened up with the stage being set: The Old Republic begins 3,000 years before the rise of Darth Vader, 300 years after the events of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Of_The_Old_Republic"><em>Knights of the Old Republic</em></a>, which would give BioWare an excellent opportunity to define and expand upon key events of <em>Star Wars</em> "pre-history."<br /><br />The entire presentation laid a significant emphasis on story and story elements. Right from the beginning, the developers lay out it: RPGs have four primary elements. Exploration, combat, progression, and story. The story element is the one most overlooked in MMOs, and <em>The Old Republic</em> intends to address that head on. They intend to embrace story right alongside the other RPG elements. It will be a major player, and not something just used to justify the other elements. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/">Star Wars: The Old Republic Screenshots</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1357047"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/ss_20090213_004_1600x900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="A Hutt" title="A Hutt" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1357048"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2009/02/ss_20090213_005_1600x900_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Cantina of the Hutt Palace" title="Cantina of the Hutt Palace" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_droidswithblasters_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Droids with blasters" title="Droids with blasters" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111059"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_tomblightsaberduel_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Tomb Lightsaber Duel " title="Tomb Lightsaber Duel " /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-old-republic-1/#1111060"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.massively.com/media/2008/10/ss_20081021_trooperopensfire_full_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Trooper opens fire" title="Trooper opens fire" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/e3-2009-star-wars-the-old-republic-demonstration/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2009: Star Wars: The Old Republic demonstration</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/e3-2009-star-wars-the-old-republic-demonstration/">E3 2009: Star Wars: The Old Republic demonstration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 21:40:00 EST. Who broke the Mandalorian blockade on Coruscant? Why, it was those wily Smugglers, that's who! The Sith weren't expecting the Galactic Republic to find assistance with that particular criminal aspect, but find it they did -- and you can learn all about it through <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/article/20090515_001">the latest <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em> timeline update</a>.<br /><br />Of course, if this second update doesn't just scream, "Smuggler class!" then we're not sure you were paying close enough attention. Then again, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> could just be trying to throw us off the trail by making the Smugglers such an obvious component to the back story. The problem is that, either way, you really cany have Star Wars without these guys somewhere in the story. Who knows, maybe they'll be called Scoundrels instead?<br /><br />And of course there's the possibility that <a href="http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mandalorian">Mandalorians</a> will be featured as an Empire class, or at least the new update seems to loosely imply as much. Either way, we should expect some kind of shady character <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/gun-toting-trooper-class-revealed-for-the-old-republic/">classes to be announced</a> sometime in the near future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/05/17/hints-of-the-smuggler-class-in-new-swtor-timeline-update/">Hints of the Smuggler class in new SWTOR timeline update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 17 May 2009 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> has been touting their focus on story with <em><a href="http://www.swtor.com">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>, and many a jaded MMO fan have scoffed and or rolled their eyes each and every time. <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/bwblog/20090424_001">Ord Mantell's developer diary concerning the planet's creation</a> gives a glimmer of hope that there truly is a blurry line between the forces of the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire.<br /><br />Instead of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/11/star-wars-the-old-republic-reveals-ord-mantell-as-its-newest-pl/">making Ord Mantell</a> an Empire controlled planet with Republic rebels attempting to overthrow it, the development team went the other direction, sort of. They made the choice of keeping the planet under Republic control, but making many of the leaders less-than-honorable types. The locale has also been malnourished by its caretakers, as the Republic is seemingly only concerned with Coruscant after the war.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/the-old-republic-shows-potential-for-more-than-good-versus-evil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Old Republic shows potential for more than good versus evil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/the-old-republic-shows-potential-for-more-than-good-versus-evil/">The Old Republic shows potential for more than good versus evil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 12:00:00 EST. The Sith have strange ways about them; strange but effective means of getting exactly what they want. This is why when Coruscant came under siege by the Sith Empire just as they were beginning peace talks with the Galactic Republic, we had a feeling there was an deeper motive beneath the obvious. It all becomes clear <a href="http://www.swtor.com/news/article/20090410_002">in this week's issue number four</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare's</a> <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em> webcomic, Threat of Peace.<br /><br />Beyond here things should only get more interesting. We're hoping for a timeline update next week along with issue five, because at four pages a pop the cliffhangers can sometimes be a real pain in our geeky butts.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/04/11/threat-of-peace-issue-4-need-we-say-more/">Threat of Peace issue #4, need we say more?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 Apr 2009 20:00:00 EST. The hotly anticipated MMO <a href="http://www.swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> <em>(SWTOR)</em> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bioware">BioWare</a> has only just been announced, but they've already given us a clear picture of the game's setting and <a href="http://www.swtor.com/info/story/setting">a bit of the lore as well.</a> From what we can tell, you won't need to be a die-hard fan of Star Wars to appreciate the title, which is good news as there's a daunting amount of Star Wars canon out there. That said, it'll certainly help to have at least some grounding in what's going on in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/ ">Star Wars: The Old Republic.</a></em> To that end, Massively's put together a brief primer on the lore of <em>SWTOR.</em><br /><br />Who is this written for? People who've seen the films but may not necessarily have played <em>Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR)</em> on PC or console, and especially those who haven't read the novels or various comic book lines released over the years. Read on, and we'll introduce you to the backdrop and factions of <em>Star Wars: The Old Republic.</em><br /><br />

There are many worlds to explore in the Star Wars universe. Some are nothing but deserts, while others are covered completely by a single city. So how do you decide which planets to include in something like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/kotor-mmo-confirmed-by-electronic-arts/">the upcoming KOTOR MMO</a>? Well, you could just <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/the-digital-continuum-five-kotor-mmo-jedi-counter-measures/">flippantly choose the ones that appeal to you the most</a>, or spend way too much of your time researching planets to figure out which ones would suit both MMO gameplay and lore the best. I went with the latter choice for this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-digital-continuum/">Digital Continuum</a>.
