<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online/"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> players know <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-cragg/">Colin "Means" Cragg</a> quite well at this point, as Cragg has worked at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> since 2004 and handled the roles of both producer and game director in recent years. Sadly, Cragg <a href="http://forums.anarchyonline.com/showthread.php?t=595958">announced that he will be leaving the company</a> at the end of the month to "pursue another challenge" and be closer to his family in Sweden.<br />
<br />
"When I look at the passion this team and the community has for <em>Anarchy Online</em> it has always made me feel privileged just to get to be a part of it," Cragg wrote in his farewell letter. "It has been an incredible honor to get to spend the last eight years working with <em>Anarchy Online</em> and being a part of the Funcom family."<br />
<br />
Two Funcom employees will split his former duties. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dave-williams/">Dave "Ilaliya" Williams</a>, who has worked on both <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/age-of-conan"><em>Age of Conan</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a>, will take over as producer. Filling the game director shoes is <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/fiatjernberg">Fia "Lindelu" Tjernberg</a>, a long-time member of the <em>Anarchy Online</em> dev team.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/16/anarchy-onlines-colin-cragg-steps-down-as-producer-and-game-dir/">Anarchy Online's Colin Cragg steps down as producer and game director</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 11:00:00 EST. It's seemed like every time I turned around in November, a spritely old-timer of an MMO was showing that it wasn't quite out of the running just yet. I mean, heck, we actually got word of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/11/21/the-united-states-army-moves-into-battleground-europe/">a big change to <em>Battleground Europe</em></a>, prompting millions to throw their hands up and exclaim, "<a href="http://www.battlegroundeurope.com/"><em>World War II Online</em></a> is still actually online? Holy donkeys!"<br />
<br />
In a way, I think these older MMOs get a free pass to escape the craziness of having to compete with more modern titles, and as such, they're more confident in their position and freer to pursue whatever is best for the game. You know, instead of trying to ape <em><a href="http://us.battle.net/wow/en/">World of Warcraft</a> </em>(which probably aped them first in the great circle of apes).<br />
<br />
So what's been going on with our favorite classic MMOs last month? Let's cast our UltraVision[TM] back on the events of November to see what's been up with four games and their communities.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/06/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-classic-mmos-in-november/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the Classic MMOs in November</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/06/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-classic-mmos-in-november/">The Game Archaeologist and the Classic MMOs in November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 19:00:00 EST. Is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online/"><em>Anarchy Online's</em></a> visual makeover project picking up steam? Considering that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom's</a> posted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/09/03/anarchy-online-shows-a-glimpse-of-its-future-makeover/">two batches</a> of <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=frontend.show&amp;table=PUBLISH&amp;template=drill&amp;func_id=1133&amp;navID=1003,1004,1133">improved screenshots</a> within a month, we think so!<br />
<br />
Today <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brad-l-mcatee/">Brad "Kintaii" McAtee</a> posted four new pictures of <em>Anarchy Online's </em>upgraded looks. Two are high-definition renders of the city of Tir, one shows off the remodeled character heads, and one is a complete mystery for players to decipher. "Any guesses on what it could be?" McAtee taunts.<br />
<br />
The visual overhaul is "coming along swimmingly," according to McAtee. Last week <em>Anarchy Online's</em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-cragg/">Colin Cragg</a> reported that the team is 90% done with remodeling over 390 heads for the game. "This has been a very long haul, but it is amazing to see the strides made every week now," Cragg wrote. "I am 'cautiously optimistic'...let's leave it at that."<br />
<br />

News of the much-anticipated <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online/"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> graphics revamp has been sparse, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/anarchy-online-details-account-merges-and-spruces-up-art/">to say the least</a>, so to see six brand-new screens of the updated engine is like a cold drink of water after an endless trek through IKEA. Seriously, it takes like two hours just to navigate through that store!<br />
<br />
Director/Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-cragg/">Colin Cragg</a> posted the six updated screenshots showing off the city of Tir on the<em> Anarchy Online</em> forums today. The screenies don't just have fans of the long-running MMO pumped, but the <em>Anarchy Online </em>team as well. "I have to keep shooing the rest of the team away from Parsed's desk...this is probably a good sign," Cragg writes.<br />
<br />
<em>AO </em>players have been waiting for the promised new graphic engine <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/video-of-anarchy-onlines-new-engine-uncovered/">at least since 2009</a>, so this is a good sign that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> is on track to update its oldest MMO with a 2011 veneer. You can check out all six screens in the gallery below.<br />

Many of us have mused from time to time what we would do if we happened to get our hands on coveted GM powers in our MMOs. While it may be tantalizing to think of slaughtering raid bosses with a single command, it's probably best that these virtual god-like powers are kept out of the public's reach. Unfortunately for the <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> team, this scenario went from hypothetical to chaotically real this past week.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online/"><em>AO</em></a> Game Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-cragg/">Colin Cragg</a> labeled it an "<a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com/wsp/anarchy/frontend.cgi?func=publish.show&amp;template=content&amp;func_id=2615&amp;table=CONTENT">unplanned and unwanted volunteer event</a>" when a player managed to access a GM account and ran amok for over two hours in the game last Tuesday. Surprisingly, the player in question did try to "put on a spectacular show with special guest stars," as Cragg put it, although the event ended up causing a huge mess. Some players became unable to fight due to fear effects while others unwittingly received special items in their inventory. The team spent over 30 hours cleaning up the situation, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom/">Funcom</a> had to suspend over 140 accounts until these items could be removed. It is unclear if they caught the person responsible.<br />

Surprisingly, Cragg says that this wasn't the first time that someone took a GM account for a joyride in the game, due to the company's policy of trusting volunteers with this access. Even so, he had a few strong words for anyone who would do this: <em>"If anyone is reading this who is responsible for these attacks GIVE US A BREAK. All we are trying to do here is trying to continue to develop a game we all enjoy. If you are mad about your accounts being banned, or something like that, please try to grow up and accept the fact that you very likely deserved it."</em><br />

When <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/07/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-girdle-of-anarchy-the-history/">I declared</a> September to be "<a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> month" I had no idea how far it would go. I mean, sure, I expected <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-girdle-of-anarchy-your-stories/">an outpouring of fond memories</a> from players and perhaps a statue erected in my honor, but for the UN to pass a resolution for a worldwide celebration of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom's</a> brainchild is quite above and beyond.<br />
<br />
So really, it's been a wild ride thus far. That's what we game archaeologists prepared for when we attended MMO U (go Fightin' N00bs!) and dusted off old copies of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_%28AOL_game%29"><em>Neverwinter Nights</em></a>. Be flexible, be enthusiastic, and always be ready for an older title to sweep you off your feet -- these are the sage words of my instructors.<br />
<br />
Because of this, I didn't find myself tongue-tied when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online/"><em>Anarchy Online's</em></a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-cragg/">Colin Cragg</a> agreed to an interview. I might have blushed and stared at my feet so that I wouldn't become lost in his wizened, sage eyes, but I marched forward nonetheless. So what did <em>AO's</em> head honcho have to say about working on a mature MMO? Click the link and wonder no longer!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-girdle-of-anarchy-a-chat-with-co/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Game Archaeologist and the Girdle of Anarchy: A chat with Colin Cragg</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/the-game-archaeologist-and-the-girdle-of-anarchy-a-chat-with-co/">The Game Archaeologist and the Girdle of Anarchy: A chat with Colin Cragg</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 16:00:00 EST. The expansion is more of a booster, actually, which is what <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> game director Colin Cragg mentions in an interview with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jon-wood">MMORPG.com's Jon Wood</a>. <br /><br />Cragg lays out what differentiates <em>Legacy of the Xan</em> from some of the larger expansions in the past, like <em>Shadowlands</em> or <em>Lost Eden</em>. The interview is heavy on details about <em>Legacy of the Xan</em> and what it brings to the game for existing players.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/anarchy-online-expansion-interview-explains-legacy-of-the-xan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Online expansion interview explains Legacy of the Xan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/anarchy-online-expansion-interview-explains-legacy-of-the-xan/">Anarchy Online expansion interview explains Legacy of the Xan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 11:00:00 EST. But <a href="http://www.anarchy-online.com"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> is still going strong, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/funcom">Funcom</a> has just announced a new expansion for the title: <em>Legacy of the Xan</em>. <br /><br />The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/anarchy-online"><em>Anarchy Online</em></a> (booster) expansion will feature two new adventure areas and bring players to the hidden city of the Xan civilization. There are also new team instanced encounters including a 12-player raid encounter, and two new storylines -- "Dust Brigade" and "Alien Invasion." <em>Anarchy Online</em> will also give you new ways to boost your characters, through symbiants, spirits, and deck items.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/anarchy-online-announces-new-expansion-legacy-of-the-xan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Anarchy Online announces new expansion: Legacy of the Xan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/anarchy-online-announces-new-expansion-legacy-of-the-xan/">Anarchy Online announces new expansion: Legacy of the Xan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 15:00:00 EST.
