Were you surprised that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/12/13/project-copernicus-remains-unsold-at-auction/">didn't manage to sell at auction</a>? Rhode Island governor <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Lincoln-Chafee/">Lincoln Chafee</a> wasn't. In recent statements to the associated press, Chafee stated that the property was "<a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/207541/People_panicked_and_gave_a_retired_baseball_player_a_huge_amount_of_taxpayer_money.php">a lot of junk</a>" and decried every step of the loan process for 38 Studios. In the governor's own words: "People just panicked and gave a retired baseball player a huge amount of taxpayer money with no experience in this industry or any other businesses."<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> (the second key player in this ongoing drama, with the other being the state of Rhode Island) responded to the governor's statements on Twitter, claiming that a failure is obvious in hindsight. Out of the many tragedies that emerged from the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> fiasco was the fact that so much artistry was ultimately abandoned, unseen, and unheard by players. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a composer who spent months working on a full MMO score only to have the studio tank and the music silenced.<br />
<br />
Well, I can't bring back 38 Studios or <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a>, but today we can at least hear a little of the music that went into the game. As a helpful commenter <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/10/01/jukebox-heroes-14-mmo-soundtracks-you-can-check-out-on-soundclo/">noted in the Sound Cloud column</a> a couple of weeks ago, <a href="https://soundcloud.com/gene-m-rozenberg">Composer Gene Rozenberg</a> of <em>The Witcher 3</em> fame posted a heap of the (then upcoming) <em>Project Copernicus</em> score on his page. We first got word of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/09/12/wanna-buy-an-mmo-copernicus-assets-for-sale-soon/">an auction</a> to sell off <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>' assets for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> earlier this month, but now we have an actual date for the auction: November 14 and 15.<br />

This sale will include the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Amalur/">Amalur</a> universe IP and all merchandise and sequel rights to the single-player <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em>, as well as IP rights to the properties of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Big-Huge-Games/">Big Huge Games</a>.<br />

We'll never see <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> come to light, and for some people that's the last that needs to be said about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a>. For the state of Rhode Island, however, there's quite a bit more at stake, with the state alleging that 38 Studios tried to hide its financial condition and essentially defrauded the taxpayers of Rhode Island. <a href="http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2013/05/lawyers-begin-arguments-in-38-studios-lawsuit.html">Opening arguments have been heard today for the case</a>, with the 14 individual defendants seeking to have the case dismissed as completely spurious.<br />
<br />
When 38 Studios folded, that left Rhode Island in the hole for a $75 million loan. The lawsuit is seeking restitution from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> and 13 other individuals, including former members of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corp that originally supported the loan. According to the EDC's lawyers, substantial evidence exists that this loan was based upon intentional misdirection on the part of upper management, although the defense claims these allegations are ridiculous. Do you have a few million on you and a desire to preserve some gaming history? Then pick up the phone and call Rhode Island, as the state <a href="http://news.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/2013/05/ri-prepares-to-sell-38-studios-video-games-to-help-recover-130-million-debt.html">is getting ready to sell</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios'</a> assets, including its games.<br />
<br />
The state is looking to recoup some of it $130 million debt that it fell into once 38 Studios went belly-up. One of Rhode Island's lawyers says there "is interest" in the studio's assets, including concept art, design documents, and computer software. The sale of 38 Studios' IP includes the Amalur franchise, which encompassed the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus">Project Copernicus</a> MMO.<br />

The state is also set <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/rhode-island-will-sell-38-studios-ip-6408577">to begin a lawsuit this week</a> against former 38 Studios execs, including founder <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a>. The suit claims that the executives did not inform the state when they knew that the studio would have a hard time keeping afloat financially. 	Just when you thought the world might let the wound where <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur</em></a> were ripped from your heart heal over, along comes some new drama.<br />
	<br />
	Max Wistow, the lawyer for the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, filed documents on behalf of the state claiming that 38 Studios needed more than $75 million in loan guarantees before the company ever moved to Rhode Island. He argues that folks at 38 Studios knew that the funds they were receiving from the state would be insufficient. "To be or not to be" is not a question asked in most MMOs. Characters don't die permanently, after all. But <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em> wouldn't have waved that fact off as an irrelevant necessity of game mechanics. No, according to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/R.A.-Salvatore/">R.A. Salvatore</a>, the game world would have explored the meaning behind a world <a href="http://kotaku.com/5942735/the-doomed-kingdoms-of-amalur-mmo-would-have-explored-the-darker-side-of-everlasting-life">wherein no one truly dies</a> and everyone is functionally immortal.<br />
<br />
Players who enjoyed <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> will recall that the game opens with the player character returning from death thanks to the Well of Souls. In <em>Project Copernicus</em>, the Well of Souls would have been active not just for one individual but for everyone in the world. Returning from death would be something that happens not just to players but to every part of the world.<br />
<br />
It's not hard to imagine the ways in which a world would seem different if death was no longer something to be feared or avoided. While 38 Studios <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/23/38-studios-appears-to-be-getting-no-new-help/">remains in dire straits</a>, fans are getting a bittersweet treat of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> reveals. It's sweet because we've been dying to see more information on this game, but bitter because its fate is still up in the air.<br />
<br />
Today fan site <a href="http://www.38watch.com/forums/showthread.php?2786-You-guys-deserve-this">38 Watch</a> posted a trio of official-looking screens straight from Copernicus' world. In the screens, three races are revealed: the human-looking Almain, the dwarven Dverga, and the orcish Jottun. The game's art style and lush color palette are on full display, opting for more of a stylized than realistic approach.<br />
<br />
We recently heard that Project Copernicus <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">has a possible June 2013 launch window</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/new-flythrough-video-previews-project-copernicus/">got our first look at the game</a> in a flyby video. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> is one of many developers whose first big game (<em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em>) was rumored to lead into an MMO further on down the line. It looks like there may be storm clouds on the horizon before that project even gets moving, however, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rhode-island-gov-working-hard-at-keeping-38-studios-solvent/">the company may be facing financial issues</a>. Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has apparently been meeting with owner <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Curt-Schilling/">Curt Schilling</a> to work on "different issues," with Chafee noting that his administration has always tried to ensure that Rhode Island companies remain financially solvent.<br />
<br />
If you consider that Rhode Island invested about $75 million in the company, it's obvious that the government has an interest in making the company remain viable over the long term. <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> was a moderate hit, but that might not be enough for the company as it develops. With <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a> just around the corner and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus/"><em>Project Copernicus</em></a> waiting in the wings, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> is fattening its golden website for the upcoming feast. The studio has expanded the site devoted to the world that both of these games inhabit, and those looking for hints and portents of the studio's upcoming MMO would do well to seek lore within its pages.<br />
<br />
Describing the website expansion as a "treasure trove" of new info, 38 Studios has added new landing pages, navigation features, and information about one of the game's races: the Gnomes. The Gnomes are described as "an enigmatic people. They bestow wondrous gifts of knowledge, medicine, and magic to befriend the other kingdoms, yet seldom reveal their plans or intentions to outsiders." It's interesting to note that the Gnomes are divided up into three casts, which does tempt the mind into thinking the word "classes."<br />
<br />
<em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> is the single-player RPG that's meant to fill the role of a prologue -- in both real-world and in-game time -- to the much larger <em>Copernicus </em>MMO.<br />

While <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios'</a> top-secret <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus/"><em>Project Copernicus</em></a> MMO lacks a proper title or most of its details, at least we can now visit the world that it and its single-player RPG brother, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>, inhabits.<br />
<br />
The studio launched a pair of websites devoted to the game world and its first game today. Over on <a href="http://www.amalur.com/">Amalur</a>, 38 Studios has unleashed its loremasters to share with you the stories, features, histories, and settings of this fantasy landscape. And while <em>Reckoning</em> is just a prequel to the eventual MMO, <a href="http://reckoning.amalur.com/en/">its website</a> contains quite a few lore snippets as well as a world map to pour over while you're planning your future conquests.<br />

As part of the twin projects, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/r.a.-salvatore/"><span class="articleText">R.A. Forum lurkers rejoice! There's a brand-new board for you to haunt, and it's kinda sorta related to an upcoming fantasy MMORPG. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling's</a> <a href="http://www.38studios.com/">38 Studios</a> has just published its community portal for <a href="http://www.reckoning.com/ag"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning,</em></a> and while the title isn't massively (or particularly multiplayer), it is affiliated with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38's</a> secretive <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO.<br />

When we say affiliated, we mean that the two titles share the same fictional world, so lore junkies will want to bookmark the new boards and set about discussing histories, race lore, and anything else pertaining to the realm of Amalur.<br />

While the upstart company still lacks a finished product, it's one step closer with today's release of the first gameplay trailer for <a href="http://reckoningthegame.com/"><em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em></a>.<br />

The footage from the upcoming single-player RPG gives fans a first look at the world of Amalur, which <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios">38 Studios</a> will revisit in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a> MMO to follow. In addition to featuring company president (and former World Series MVP) <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/curt-schilling">Curt Schilling</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning"><em>Reckoning</em></a> boasts an impressive array of talent from both 38 Studios and <a href="http://www.bighugegames.com/">Big Huge Games</a> including lore-master <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/r.a.-salvatore">R.A. Salvatore</a>, former <em>Morrowind</em> and <em>Oblivion</em> lead designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ken-rolston">Ken Rolston</a>, and Spawn creator <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/todd-mcfarlane">Todd McFarlane</a>.<br />

One thing is for certain: When you are sitting in the crosshairs of Curt Schilling and R.A. Salvatore during an interview, it's easy to become bowled over by their collective intensity and passion, especially when it comes to their interest in games and fantasy worlds.<br />
<br />
While GenCon Indy lacked its usual MMORPG presence this year, Massively was able to grab a few minutes of face time with <a href="http://38studios.com/">38 Studios'</a> founder and lead writer as they passed through the convention. It was a bit of an odd interview, however, as two of the biggest topics -- <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios'</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/27/38-studios-moves-next-door-to-rhode-island-for-75-million-smacke/">move to Rhode Island</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2010/07/08/schilling-teases-possible-copernicus-concept-art/">any solid details about their top-secret MMO</a> -- were off the table for discussion. Do not fret, as that certainly didn't stop us from trying to pry for a few hints along the way. Schilling and Salvatore were obviously eager to spill the beans about <a href="http://38studios.com/products/copernicus"><em>Copernicus</em></a>, but they are still biding their time until the right moment.<br />

Happily, the duo didn't mind us fencing with them for facts, and were quite open about their single-player RPG lead-up to <em>Copernicus</em>, their general philosophy of designing the MMO, and why they've waited so long to unveil it to the public.
