<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dean-hall">Dean Hall</a> has officially made it to the top of the world. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dayz"><em>DayZ</em></a> creator watched the sun rise from the summit of Mt. Everest on May 21st, according to a tweet released <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/193008/The_guy_who_created_DayZ_made_it_to_the_top_of_Mt_Everest.php">earlier today</a>.<br />
<br />
Gamasutra recently asked Hall about his <em>Arma</em> zombie mod's <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/192941/dean_hall_discusses_dayzs_.php">phenomenal success</a>, and he pointed to the design's ability to trigger psychological responses to both ownership and loss. "I think the big thing was that it was this finely-crafted mix of permadeath -- which gave you a sense of value, because you could lose something -- and ownership," Hall explained. "Because it's persistent, it means that it's going to be there tomorrow. I think those two things mixed together meant that you had these really valuable stories that came from it."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/hall-conquers-everest-talks-dayzs-ownership-and-loss/">Hall conquers Everest, talks DayZ's ownership and loss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 24 May 2013 19:00:00 EST. Much ado has certainly been made lately about doing something "new and different" in games. Just take a look at all the options coming through <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/kickstarter/">Kickstarter</a> lately; even more contenders have thrown their hats into the ring since our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/some-assembly-required-kick-start-ing-the-sandbox-genre-into-hi/">roundup last February</a>. But in a large number of these cases, the new ideas are coming from developers within the gaming industry. So what would happen if a game were developed from outside the industry?<br />
<br />
Enter <em><a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nerdkingdom/tug-1">TUG</a></em>. Formally known as <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tug">The Untitled Game</a></em>, the game is the brainchild of <a href="http://nerdkingdom.com/">Nerd Kingdom</a>, a group hailing from the world of academia that happens to have intersected with gaming. Self-described as "a collaboration of video game developers, academic scientists, modders, and gamers," this group wants to move beyond just improving the way games are made "to show[ing] that such games can make us better as individuals and as a society."<br />
<br />
I was able to catch up with one of the founders of Nerd Kingdom, Scientist and Researcher of Stuffs <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Peter-Salinas/">Peter Salinas</a>, to talk about the game. We touched on everything from player design input to features (like player books and companions) to making an engine available for others to use. Oh, and of course, Soylent Green.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/some-assembly-required-tug-interview-reveals-the-true-nature-o/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Some Assembly Required: TUG interview reveals the true nature of Soylent Green</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/some-assembly-required-tug-interview-reveals-the-true-nature-o/">Some Assembly Required: TUG interview reveals the true nature of Soylent Green</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 24 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. The last time I explored <a href="http://www.thresholdrpg.com"><em>ThresholdRPG</em></a>, I had a blast. It was one of a batch of MUDs that I used to re-introduce myself to the ancient gaming genre, and I <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/27/rise-and-shiny-threshold-rpg/">enjoyed its simplicity and friendly community</a>. MUDs can seem to be very similar to each other, so in order to enjoy them, you must be able to pick out the finer details that separate them. In <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Threshold-RPG"><em>ThresholdRPG</em></a>, I particularly enjoyed fishing, roleplay, customization, and a free-to-play model that was years ahead of its time when first released 17 years ago.<br />
<br />
The game can be a bit <em>odd</em>, like any MUD. During <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/MUD-May/">MUD May</a> I've discovered just how confusing many of these titles can be, but I have also grown to enjoy solving the "mystery" of each game's particular set of code-words that unlock actions. <em>ThresholdRPG</em> is like other MUDs and introduces players to basic commands, but once out in the world a player is on her own. The good news is that an out-of-character help chat is always available and sits right on top of the standard roleplay-enforced chat. That juxtaposition of both channels actually helps immerse me in the game, allowing me to see literally where and when I can use out-of-character speech.<br />
<br />
I asked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/michael-hartman/">Michael Hartman</a>, president and CEO of <a href="http://www.frogdice.com">Frogdice</a>, to talk about MUD development and branching out into other styles of gaming.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/free-for-all-an-interview-with-thresholdrpgs-michael-hartman/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Free for All: An interview with ThresholdRPG's Michael Hartman</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/free-for-all-an-interview-with-thresholdrpgs-michael-hartman/">Free for All: An interview with ThresholdRPG's Michael Hartman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 20:00:00 EST. A few days ago we reported on <a href="http://www.riftgame.com"><em>RIFT's</em></a> impending free-to-play conversion, followed by the news that <a href="http://www.trionworlds.com">Trion</a> was undergoing a second set of apparently unrelated layoffs. Former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/trion">Trion</a> studio GM and CCO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/scott-hartsman">Scott Hartsman</a> responded to the layoffs on Twitter, intimating that aspects of the gaming industry are "fundamentally broken."<br />
<br />
After we <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/21/the-daily-grind-do-you-think-mmo-gamemaking-is-fundamentally-br/">invited your thoughts</a> on that same subject in a Daily Grind earlier this week, we contacted Hartsman in the hopes of getting him to elaborate. Join us after the cut for the resulting interview.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/hartsman-the-traditional-aaa-style-of-development-and-distribu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hartsman: 'The traditional AAA style of development and distribution' is broken</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/hartsman-the-traditional-aaa-style-of-development-and-distribu/">Hartsman: 'The traditional AAA style of development and distribution' is broken</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 16:30:00 EST. After months of waiting, we can finally say that <em><a href="http://startrekonline.com">Star Trek Online's</a></em> <em><a href="http://sto.perfectworld.com/legacyofromulus">Legacy of Romulus</a></em> expansion is upon us! After yesterday's launch, it's now possible to play as a member of the new Romulan Republic faction. It's now possible to begin a Klingon faction character from level 1! There's a new adventure zone and a completely overhauled user interface.<br />
<br />
We recently had the opportunity to ask <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Trek-Online/">Star Trek Online's</a></em> Executive Producer, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Daniel-Stahl/">Daniel Stahl</a>, some questions regarding the update. We were also given a lot of screenshots of the new material, and all are included in the new gallery below. There was a lot to cover, so let's get to it!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-legacy-of-romulus/">Star Trek Online Legacy of Romulus</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-legacy-of-romulus/#5902094"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/lor-01-g_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-legacy-of-romulus/#5902095"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/lor-02-g_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-legacy-of-romulus/#5902096"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/lor-03-g_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-legacy-of-romulus/#5902098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/lor-04-g_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-online-legacy-of-romulus/#5902099"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/lor-05-g_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/captains-log-supplemental-an-exclusive-qanda-with-stos-daniel-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Captain's Log Supplemental: An Exclusive Q&amp;A with STO's Daniel Stahl</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/22/captains-log-supplemental-an-exclusive-qanda-with-stos-daniel-s/">Captain's Log Supplemental: An Exclusive Q&amp;A with STO's Daniel Stahl</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 22 May 2013 15:30:00 EST. So who wants to hear some cool stuff about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar</a></em>? Thought so!<br />
<br />
Massively's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/editor/Gavin-Townsley/">Gavin Townsley</a> recently attended a <em>WildStar</em> media event in San Francisco, at which he was treated to a hands-on look at the upcoming sci-fantasy MMORPG's Scientist path and Esper class. He also chatted with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine Studios</a> executive producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Gaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a>, who pulls a Gaffney (I'm coining that) and can't resist leaking a bit of new info about tradeskills while filling Gavin in on how endgame will work, why we should play the Settler path, and whether talent trees are pass&eacute;. If you think making 10 pairs of cotton space pants sounds boring, then yeah -- you're going to like what he's got to say.<br />
<br />
Enjoy all three articles plus the <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/the-game/paths/">brand-new path videos</a> we've embedded past the cut!<br />

In a world full of potential and chaos, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar's</a></em> factions will succeed on the planet Nexus on the backs of the Settlers. The Settlers don't just build bonfires for sappy Explorers to sing around; these titans of construction will save you time in dungeons, establish bigger outposts, and open up new realms of quests for everyone.<br />
<br />

"This is going to be the best game most of us have built in our lives," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Carbine-Studios/">Carbine Studios</a> Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jeremy-Gaffney/">Jeremy Gaffney</a> said bluntly.<br />
<br />
The game in question, of course, is <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/"><em>WildStar</em></a>, and it represents Gaffney's 10th or so trip through the beta development chute on the way to release. There's an undeniable note of pride and calm confidence in his voice as he talks about the baby that's growing inside Carbine's womb right now, and he was definitely not shy in opening up about all of the decisions and work the team's made as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wildstar/"><em>WildStar</em></a> heads into its second trimester... er, closed beta test.<br />

Before that, however, Gaffney provided a recap of the first closed beta test. He said that it was pretty limited, with only 2,000 players testing out the lowbie Exile zones. The team moved some of the elder game content down in level so that people could test it out, and developers spent some time doing impromptu Q&amp;A sessions with players in the field. As a result, Carbine is ready to shift over to the Dominion side and greatly expand the beta in size and content. Read on for the full scoop on what the next step will entail.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/unicorn-poop-beer-cans-and-housing-dungeons-wildstars-jeremy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Unicorn poop, beer cans, and housing dungeons: WildStar's Jeremy Gaffney preps us for closed beta 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/unicorn-poop-beer-cans-and-housing-dungeons-wildstars-jeremy/">Unicorn poop, beer cans, and housing dungeons: WildStar's Jeremy Gaffney preps us for closed beta 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Trion-Worlds/">Trion Worlds</a> has just announced that fantasy MMO <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/RIFT/">RIFT</a></em> will be headed free-to-play on June 12th. Though former studio reps were once adamant that the game would remain a subscription MMO, the team has apparently decided it can better compete in a F2P world by being F2P. The hybrid model will include an optional sub with fully free content like dungeons and questing; consumables, cosmetics, and even gear will make up the cash shop.<br />
<br />
We asked Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bill-Fisher/">Bill Fisher</a> to explain the whys and wherefores of this decision. Check out our interview after the jump!<br />

Snow-covered zones aren't exactly new to <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a>, but the upcoming region of Wildermore is a little bit different than the normal Misty Mountain ski resorts. How so? Well, for one thing, it's not supposed to be snowy at all. So what's up with the premature winter in this area of Rohan -- and what are you, the player, going to do about it?<br />
<br />
That's the basic setup for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/update-11/">Update 11: Treachery of the White Hand</a>. The update, which should be going live next week, is what I call the intermission zone: It's the region that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine</a> adds between expansions to keep veteran players from bouncing off the walls due to boredom. Lothlorien, Enedwaith, and the Great River are past intermission zones, but Wildermore might be the most fascinating one yet.<br />
<br />
Thanks to technical issues, I wasn't able to get a first-hand tour of the new region. Instead, I nabbed a heart-to-heart chat with the devs about the intricacies of Wildermore, the next step of the epic story, and plenty of assorted goodies coming with the update!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/the-road-to-mordor-a-wildermore-dev-chat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: A Wildermore dev chat</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/11/the-road-to-mordor-a-wildermore-dev-chat/">The Road to Mordor: A Wildermore dev chat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 11 May 2013 12:00:00 EST. Movement does not normally seem like a complicated topic in MMOs. You press forward; your character goes forward. Backward? Same deal. You can turn, and you can strafe, and you can turn <em>and</em> strafe <em>and</em> run forward if you're some kind of rebel or you want to give yourself motion sickness. But <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com"><em>WildStar</em></a> makes movement a bigger deal than normal because with a greater emphasis on action comes a greater emphasis on moving out of the path of danger.<br />
<br />
The latest official video covers all the basics of movement, from dashing to sprinting to pining for the presumably nonexistent quadruple jump. But we had a chance to sit down with lead combat systems designer Chris Lynch and lead class designer Hugh Shelton to talk about more of the specifics, starting with the obvious question: What beast must we slay to unlock the all-powerful quadruple jump?<br />
<br />
Wait, that wasn't it. It was about chaining movement tricks together in an endless cycle of airborne dashes.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/massively-exclusive-how-wildstar-has-the-power-to-move-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Massively Exclusive: How WildStar has the power to move you</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/massively-exclusive-how-wildstar-has-the-power-to-move-you/">Massively Exclusive: How WildStar has the power to move you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 10 May 2013 10:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Wildstar/">Wildstar</a></em> features a huge world, a variety of wildlife, an in-depth housing system, a variety of questing mechanics... but for some players that's just not the interesting part. No, the interesting thing is finding out how you can take up arms against a fellow player. A new interview with lead PvP designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jen-Gordy/">Jen Gordy</a> <a href="http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=32258">sheds some light on the game's PvP mechanics</a> and how the designers are using this side of the game to continue encouraging players to play the game how they want.<br />
<br />
There will be two PvP-centric stats on the game, one to improve damage to other players and one to decrease it. The development team is also including features like the ability to minimize the duration of a stun once you've been hit to avoid having PvP matches boil down to a race to incapacitate the other side. But both PvP and PvE are meant to still work toward the same whole -- things that you get on one side will be useful on the other, freeing you to explore the game aspects you find the most rewarding. <a href="http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=32258">Read the full interview</a> for more details on how you can cut down your fellow players for glory and (presumably) profit.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/wildstars-lead-pvp-designer-on-differentiation-and-dynamics/">WildStar's lead PvP designer on differentiation and dynamics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 24 Apr 2013 18:30:00 EST. Game Industry interviewed <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-citizen"><em>Star Citizen</em></a> mogul <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a> at last month's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC 2013</a>, and the resulting read features plenty of interesting nuggets for space sim fans and the Roberts faithful.<br />
<br />
He confirms a few things we already knew about <em>SC's</em> playable hangar demo scheduled for August, as well as the dogfighting alpha in December. He also shares how his team's shortened development schedule and modular process is adding up to a tighter, better game than could be made at a AAA studio.<br />
<br />
And if <em>Star Citizen's</em> ever-increasing crowdfunding totals are any indication, Roberts' audience is more than OK with the process. "We generated $800,000 in February alone, which is crazy," he said. "We don't even have a campaign going, we're not even selling new ships or anything, and we don't have a game." He goes on to guesstimate that his 150,000-odd early adopters are only five to 10 percent of <em>Star Citizen's</em> post-launch audience. "Ultimately that means I can make the same game for a fifth of the revenue, a fifth of the sales, and I can be more profitable, and I can exist on lower unit sales. I think that's good for gamers, because crowdfunding and digital distribution are enabling more nichey stuff to be viable."<br />
<br />
Roberts also hints at the future of <em>SC's</em> business model, likening it to that of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/world-of-tanks"><em>World of Tanks</em></a>. Finally, he has a few kind words for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sony">Sony's</a> forthcoming PlayStation 4, and even says he'd consider putting <em>SC</em> on a console under the right circumstances. "The good news is that [the PS4] is essentially a PC, so that means PC owners will get much better ports of console games. I'm not a PC elitist by any means," Roberts explains. "If I could be on the PS4, and they were open, and I could do the updating and all the sort of stuff we're trying to do on <em>Star Citizen</em>, then I would definitely consider putting it on PS4 because it's essentially a PC with a friendlier operating system."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/star-citizens-roberts-on-business-models-the-ps4-and-more/">Star Citizen's Roberts on business models, the PS4, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 23 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/goblinworks">Goblinworks</a>' CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ryan-dancey">Ryan Dancy</a> recently guested on the DM Fiat podcast. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/pathfinder-online"><em>Pathfinder Online</em></a> producer had plenty to say about the tabletop RPG that's invading the MMO space, including nuggets about <em>Pathfinder's</em> extensive guild/settlement system, the River Kingdoms and expanding beyond them, and player-generated content.<br />
<br />
Dancey says that Goblinworks would like for players to create their own PvE content modules and sell them to others, likely via some sort of app store format. He also mentions <em>Pathfinder's</em> archetype system and its numerous advantages over traditional class mechanics. Head to DM Fiat to listen to the podcast.<br />

The <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Camelot-Unchained/">Camelot Unchained</a></em> team has just released a new <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/13861848/camelot-unchained/posts">video dev blog</a> for Kickstarter backers outlining some fairly ambitious plans for mining and construction in the upcoming PvE-free sandbox. The system will involve combinations of custom and prefab cells in which players so inclined can build up the empires and trading posts and fortifications of their dreams. And in a nod to games like <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Minecraft/">Minecraft</a></em>, the construction mechanics are built on a foundation of supplies procured through co-op mining gameplay.<br />
<br />
Ahead of the reveal, we asked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/City-State-Entertainments/">City State Entertainment's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mark-Jacobs/">Mark Jacobs</a> a few questions about the systems he's proposing, from the influence of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Mojang/">Mojang's</a> popular sandbox to whether mining will become my new part-time job. Read on for the complete interview!<br />

<em><a href="http://www.duelofchampions.com/en/index.aspx">Might and Magic: Duel of Champions</a></em> is a new collectible card game brought to us by <a href="http://www.ubi.com/US/">Ubisoft Quebec</a>. Some folks might say that trading card games are a dime a dozen and that once you've played one, you've played them all. But I think the genre is always moving forward and expanding, introducing new designs and interesting ways to play, which is true of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/might-and-magic-duel-of-champions/"><em>Might and Magic</em></a>'s latest go at the TCG market. During my tour, I found myself up against producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/stephane-jankowski/">Stephane Jankowski</a>. Unfortunately for me, he is no stranger to the game. He takes it quite seriously, going so far as to "go easy" on me so that I was not embarrassed. Little did he know that I am a noob at every game out there, so no harm was done.<br />
<br />
<em>Might and Magic: Duel of Champions</em> is a great game for those who want not only more strategy but also a faster pace. The tutorial walked me through some of the basics, but I learned more in the hour I played with Stephane than I had playing during the previous week. Click past the cut to watch the livestream and read up on what makes this one stand out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/19/watch-might-and-magic-duel-of-champions-producer-destroy-massi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Watch Might and Magic: Duel of Champions' producer destroy Massively</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/19/watch-might-and-magic-duel-of-champions-producer-destroy-massi/">Watch Might and Magic: Duel of Champions' producer destroy Massively</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 19 Apr 2013 12:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/andy-velasquez/">Andy Velasquez</a> has seen his fair share of MMO launches, but that doesn't make a new one any less exhilarating or terrifying. As lead producer, he's the captain of the <a href="http://nw.perfectworld.com/"><em>Neverwinter</em></a> ship and must make sure it's seaworthy before slipping out of drydock and heading into the unknown waters of release. Metaphor or no, it's a daunting job with little downtime, especially in this final week leading up to the soft launch of open beta.<br />

<em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Black-Desert/">Black Desert</a></em> is not a game that can be faulted for lack of ambition. <a href="http://www.worldsfactory.net/giochi/pc/black-desert-intervista-esclusiva">A recent interview with the design staff</a> helps show off just how big the game aims to be, which includes territory control, building relationships with NPCs, and an open-world housing system with a limited number of houses. It also discusses the game's combat, which is meant to be realistic active combat with an emphasis on skill and momentum.<br />
<br />
The game's combat system will include combat on foot or while mounted, with mounted combat having several obvious advantages -- charging while mounted can be incredibly damaging, and you have an easier time knocking down targets on foot. Combat is meant to be slightly loose rather than forcing characters to have perfect timing, but the emphasis is on "realistic" combat over a string of abilities. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/mechwarrior-online/">Mechwarrior Online</a></em> is about to hit its fifth month of open beta, with promises of a late summer launch. With that launch comes continued production, new content, plenty of bug fixes, and tweaks. With all of the new content -- said to be delivered on a regular schedule -- comes plenty of challenges for the developer team.<br />
<br />
We sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/piranha-games">Piranha Games</a>' creative director, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bryan-ekman/">Bryan Ekman</a>, and president, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/russ-bullock/">Russ Bullock</a>, to talk about how things have been going and where they're going in the future. Not only did we get the scoop on the next community-designed Mech to be released, but we also found out about new HUD improvements, aid for players who suffer from high ping, and much more. Click past the cut for all the details!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/16/mechwarrior-online-devs-talk-update-15-new-ui-new-mechs/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MechWarrior Online devs talk Update 15, new UI, new mechs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/16/mechwarrior-online-devs-talk-update-15-new-ui-new-mechs/">MechWarrior Online devs talk Update 15, new UI, new mechs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 16 Apr 2013 13:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mark-jacobs">Mark Jacobs</a> isn't jumping on the free-to-play bandwagon like most of his MMO-making contemporaries. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/camelot-unchained"><em>Camelot Unchained</em></a> developer and former <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dark-age-of-camelot"><em>Dark Age of Camelot</em></a> head honcho predicted a F2P "apocalypse" in a <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2013/04/12/camelot-unchained-dev-free-to-play-headed-towards-an-apocalypse-in-3-5-years-time/">recent interview</a> with VG247.<br />
<blockquote class="bq-standard">
	You know, free-to-play is just another model, and just like every other model in the industry, it will hold its special little place for a while but then there will be consequences. Those consequences in a few years will be a bit of an apocalypse.<br />
	<br />
	You're going to see a lot of developers shutting down, and you're going to see a lot of publishers going, oh yeah maybe spending $20 million on a free-to-play game wasn't the best idea ever. That's part of the reason, but the other reason is equally as important, that if you go free-to-play, you really have to compete with every other free-to-play game out there.</blockquote>
<em>Camelot Unchained</em>, which recently passed the halfway point of its $2 million <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/13861848/camelot-unchained/posts/452806">Kickstarter goal</a>, will be a "niche subscription game," which Jacobs says will allow his studio to focus on creating content for a more desirable audience.<br />
<br />
The subscription model "allows us to focus our game on the people who want to pay for it, and are willing to pay for it," Jacobs explains. "I'll take a smaller subscription base that is dedicated, is energized and is excited to play our game, and to work with our game, than ten times that base where I have to deal with a lot of people who really don't care."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/mark-jacobs-on-the-coming-f2p-apocalypse/">Mark Jacobs on the coming F2P apocalypse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST. A week ago, we asked <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Snail-Games/">Snail Games</a> some questions pertaining to <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Age-of-Wushu/">Age of Wushu</a></em> and its launch in the west. Just in time for launch, the studio got back to us with some answers. Sometimes, good things come to those who wait.<br />
<br />
We pulled no punches with our questions, asking Snail about the recent Suzhou market fiasco, when the devs plan to add features from other versions of the game, and how they plan to address current game-breaking bugs. Interested in hearing the answers? We know we were!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/11/the-age-of-wushu-team-on-whats-coming-after-launch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Age of Wushu team on what's coming after launch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/11/the-age-of-wushu-team-on-whats-coming-after-launch/">The Age of Wushu team on what's coming after launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 11 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. Although he's been dropping hints and teasing fans for a while now, Creative Director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen/">Jens Andersen</a> kept the bulk of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/"><em>DC Universe Online's</em></a> seventh DLC, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/origin-crisis"><em>Origin Crisis</em></a>, under wraps. That all changed when <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dcuos-andersen-talks-housing-hints-at-league-version/">we met up</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a>; he opened the floodgates of information, sharing a wealth of details about the story, the content, and the new costumes. And now I can pass it all along to you.<br />
<br />
Story-wise, Andersen expressed how excited he was to finally let players in on the arc that ties up a few loose ends left dangling after DLCs 2 and 3 -- <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/02/dcuo-lightning-strikes-update-to-feature-superhero-origins-conte/">Lightning Strikes</a></em> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/15/dcuos-battle-for-earth-pack-spells-the-final-confrontation-with/">Battle for Earth</a></em>. As for content, <em>Origin Crisis</em> adds two new raids, two four-man operations per side, two special solo challenges (which offer the chance to play as a legendary character), a new superpower, and a new tier of PvE gear. Oh, and let's not forget the three new iconic-based suits.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/jens-andersen-reveals-dcuos-origins-crisis-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jens Andersen reveals DCUO's Origin Crisis DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/jens-andersen-reveals-dcuos-origins-crisis-dlc/">Jens Andersen reveals DCUO's Origin Crisis DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 11:00:00 EST. In a phone interview with <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-04-09-the-doctor-is-out-greg-zeschuk-on-bioware-ea-and-the-uncertain-console-future">GamesIndustry.biz</a>, Zeschuk explains why he's open to games consulting and how he doesn't game as much as he used to.<br />
<br />
Zeschuk also rejects any notion of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ea">Electronic Arts</a> being a negative influence on BioWare. "They don't second-guess you, they don't say you shouldn't do that," he explains. "We had complete creative control over a lot of it; some fans didn't like some of it and some of it was experimental, quite frankly."<br />
<br />
Finally, Zeschuk has some interesting insights into gamer culture and the negativity that surrounded BioWare's recent projects. "At the end of the day, for every one person complaining there are a whole bunch of other people who actually like it," Zeschuk says. And while he admits to enjoying the fact that beer lovers aren't prone to arguments and invective like gamers, there's something to be said for that level of engagement. "I think the problem with gamers is you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. But what it talks to is the power of games as art and the power of games as a medium where people get really, really passionate," Zeschuk explains.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/bioware-co-founder-talks-eas-influence-beer-and-gamer-negativ/">BioWare co-founder talks EA's influence, beer, and gamer negativity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 10 Apr 2013 10:00:00 EST. Although there is no <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/some-assembly-required">Some Assembly Required</a> in the title, don't let that fool you; today's focus is on one of the founding precepts of this column, player-generated content. It's just not sandboxy player-generated content like we've covered before. Today's special edition explores the PGC proposed for the decidedly non-sandbox action RPG <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/path-of-exile">Path of Exile</a></em>.<br />
<br />
At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a> I sat down with managing director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-wilson/">Chris Wilson</a> and technical director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jonathan-rogers/">Jonathan Rogers</a> to discuss <em>Path of Exile</em> and their idea of adding player-run races to the game. A fan favorite, these timed gaming experiences are currently only officially sponsored events grouped into seasons, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/path-of-exiles-season-one-race-events-start-february-23rd/">the first of which</a> just concluded. However, devs would like to give players the opportunity to create and host unofficial events (meaning results won't have any bearing on the seasons) to allow players to enjoy this wildly popular facet of the game in a place where they can practice skills, test themselves against friends, or just enjoy a unique challenge.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/08/path-of-exile-interview-reveals-plans-for-player-generated-races/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Path of Exile interview reveals plans for player-generated races</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/08/path-of-exile-interview-reveals-plans-for-player-generated-races/">Path of Exile interview reveals plans for player-generated races</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 08 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. Good news! (Well, at least for my police record.) As it turns out, I didn't have to resort to kidnapping to convince someone from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft</a> to talk to me about <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/">Aion</a></em> at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC</a>. I swear, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Sean-Orlikowski/">Sean Orlikowski</a>, the game's associate producer, came willingly.<br />
<br />
It does, however, appear that in the fine print of the meeting proposal, I agreed to be outfitted with a special electronic device that would send massive jolts of electricity through my system if I tried to speak about something I shouldn't. So let's see how much I can share with you before this apparatus leaves me unconscious.<br />
<br />
Can I tell you that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion/"><em>Aion</em></a> has a special celebration planned for the first anniversary of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/truly-free/">Truly Free</a> conversion? So far, so good, folks. Hmm... can I add that the next big expansion has a North American launch date planned without going unconscious... oh, appears so! OK, let's push this a little further: How about if I happened to mention that 4.0 will hit servers in June 2013 -- would I be zapped? Nope! So there you have it, folks: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/aion-4.0/">4.0</a> is indeed going live in just two short months!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/06/wings-over-atreia-exclusive-aion-4-0-launches-in-june/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wings Over Atreia Exclusive: Aion 4.0 launches in June!</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/06/wings-over-atreia-exclusive-aion-4-0-launches-in-june/">Wings Over Atreia Exclusive: Aion 4.0 launches in June!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 06 Apr 2013 14:00:00 EST. It may seem like a while has passed since we last experienced <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/city-of-steam/"><em>City of Steam</em></a>, the fantasy steampunk MMORPG that fits in your browser. That's because it has! The game's last <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/12/12/city-of-steam-double-feature-a-beta-trailer-and-a-steam-greenli/">closed beta testing</a> round was back in December, and fans have been eagerly waiting to get back into the city-state of Nexus. Of course there has been <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/city-of-steams-bestiary-gives-pre-launch-advantage/">some</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/01/02/mechanist-says-no-to-huge-pauldrons-revamps-city-of-steam-npc-d/">news</a> to tide us over in the meantime while developers have been turning all of that beta feedback into fixes and updates, but that's not the same; people want to play. Luckily, it's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013">GDC </a>to the rescue!<br />
<br />
While the rest of the world won't actually get to access <em>City of Steam</em> until it launches open beta (which is anticipated to be within the next two months!), I was able to dive in and explore the fruits of the devs' winter labors. And let me tell you, they've put their time to good use! I met with Communications Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Gabriel-Laforge/">Gabriel Laforge</a> and Operations Director Andrew Woodruff from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mechanist-games">Mechanist Games</a> who showed off all the work that has gone into the game since the beta closed, from graphics to crafting to airships. They also highlighted the game's cash shop and revealed numerous rewards players can earn simply by playing the game.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/gdc-2013-city-of-steam-demo-showcases-crafting-and-other-stream/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: City of Steam demo showcases crafting and other streamlined features</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/gdc-2013-city-of-steam-demo-showcases-crafting-and-other-stream/">GDC 2013: City of Steam demo showcases crafting and other streamlined features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 05 Apr 2013 16:30:00 EST. When we talk about getting our hands on a game at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2013/">GDC</a> for a little playtime, we don't usually get to literally grasp said game in our fingers. But that's exactly what happened when I tested out <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/vendetta-online">Vendetta Online</a></em> on an iPad 3; instead of just relating to the space-based sandbox through the standard accessories like mouse, keyboard, or joystick, I held the entirety of the game universe in the palms of my hands. My own 10 digits were the only accessories. And the experience impressed me!<br />
<br />
I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/john-bergman">John Bergman</a>, Founder and CEO of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/guild-software">Guild Software</a>, to talk about the new iOS platform for <em>Vendetta Online</em> while doing my best <a href="http://i1.cdnds.net/12/31/618x464/movies_goose_top_gun_1.jpg">Goose impersonation</a> (he's way better than Maverick) playing it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-vendetta-online-on-the-ipad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Hands-on with Vendetta Online on the iPad</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-hands-on-with-vendetta-online-on-the-ipad/">GDC 2013: Hands-on with Vendetta Online on the iPad</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 18:30:00 EST. <em>Acquisition.</em> Though it sounds pretty benign on its own, when used in reference to one developer taking over another, the word can inspire fear in the hearts of gamers. Questions quickly arise about the future of titles that fall on the acquired side of the equation. How will the games and players be affected by the change? Will there even still <em>be</em> a game?<br />
<br />
I sat down with Claas Wolter (European PR Manager) and Deanna Peter (Marketing/PR Associate) to discuss just this topic regarding the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/02/01/webzen-buys-100-of-gala-net-gpotato/">recent purchase</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gala-net">Gala-Net</a> (the parent company of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gpotato">gPotato</a>) by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/webzen/">Webzen</a> and how that acquisition will affect <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/allods-online/">Allods Online</a>, </em><em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/age-of-wulin/">Age of Wulin</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/terra-militaris/"><em>Terras Militaris</em></a>, and the company's other MMORPGs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-the-mmo-impact-of-the-webzen-and-gala-net-merge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: The MMO impact of the Webzen and Gala-Net merge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/gdc-2013-the-mmo-impact-of-the-webzen-and-gala-net-merge/">GDC 2013: The MMO impact of the Webzen and Gala-Net merge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 14:30:00 EST. By now, pretty much everyone knows the story of how <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamers-first">GamersFirst</a> swept in to save the DOA <em>All Points Bulletin</em> by relaunching it as <a href="http://apbreloaded.gamersfirst.com/"><em>APB: Reloaded</em></a>. Since then, the title's done immensely well for the company and has prompted <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Reloaded-Games/">Reloaded Games</a> to look into turning <a href="http://apbreloaded.gamersfirst.com/"><em>APB</em></a> into a bona fide franchise.<br />
<br />
How this happened was explained to us by PR Manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/darek-connole">Darek Connole</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a>. Connole said that the devs are constantly taking suggestions from the community and sorting them into different buckets. While some of the buckets represent doable ideas, one bucket is full of great ideas that are impossible to implement in the current game.<br />
<br />
"We're taking the NPCs from <em>APB: Reloaded</em> and bringing them into their own game," Connole said. "It's going to be a traditional first-person shooter, but it's also going to have non-traditional elements."<br />
<br />
Read on to discover how <em>APB's</em> world is going to get a lot more crazy with <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/reloadedprod/all-points-bulletin-apb-vendetta"><em>APB: Vendetta</em></a> -- and how the team is even thinking about future games in the same world.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/gdc-2013-how-apb-exploded-into-a-franchise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: How APB exploded into a franchise</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/31/gdc-2013-how-apb-exploded-into-a-franchise/">GDC 2013: How APB exploded into a franchise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 31 Mar 2013 16:00:00 EST. Hey, is that CEO <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-taylor">Chris Taylor</a> from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gas-powered-games">Gas Powered Games</a>? By jove, it is! At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> this past week we had the opportunity to catch up with Taylor and see how his studio is doing following its acquisition by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wargaming.net">Wargaming.net</a>. He said that the synergy between his studio and Wargaming.net is powerful: "Our overlap is enormous between what we believe in as a company and what Wargaming believes in."<br />
<br />
We were most curious about the "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/gas-powered-games-working-on-mystery-mmo/">mystery MMO</a>" that Taylor and his team is constructing. "We are doing research and prototyping on our first Wargaming game," Taylor said, "which will be a huge PvP, free-to-play MMO. It's going to take a little while to get it rolling, and we'll talk about it more once we know it is exactly. We'll announce it down the road."<br />
<br />
Is there anything else that he was willing to share about it? Taylor paused and said, "It's going to be the biggest game we've ever made."<br />

	There's been quite the hubbub surrounding <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/trion-worlds">Trion Worlds'</a> taking up the mantle as the Western publisher of Korean sandbox title <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/archeage">ArcheAge</a></em>, largely because many fans were doubtful that the game would even make its way to the western hemisphere at all. Now that we know that we're going to be able to get our hands on the title courtesy of Trion, a new set of questions have been raised. How will Trion be handling the game's localization? Will the game be receiving extensive westernization, or will we be getting the game as-is? Thankfully, some of those questions now have answers.<br />
	<br />
	In an interview with MMOCulture, Trion Worlds' Senior Producer for <em>ArcheAge</em>, <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/victoria-voss">Victoria Voss</a>, answered a few questions on the upcoming western version of the hotly anticipated sandbox title. In the interview, Voss reveals that Trion is in constant communication with ArcheAge developer <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/xlgames">XLGAMES</a> in regard to the localization process, noting that Trion has discovered that "XLGAMES had many of the same thoughts [on localization] as [Trion], so many of the changes will be game-wide, not just for the west," though Trion is also "working with XLGAMES on some western-specific changes, such as character creation options, which [western] players are expecting." And of course, in the ultimate tease, Voss reveals that there is an internal ETA for the game's closed beta test, but Trion isn't quite ready to announce the specifics. For now, though, try to satiate your cravings by clicking through the link below to check out the full interview.<br />

This week we have a special <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> edition of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Some-Assembly-Required/">Some Assembly Required</a>. I had the opportunity to sit down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/chris-roberts">Chris Roberts</a> and talk about his highly anticipated space sim sandbox, <em><a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/">Star Citizen</a></em>. We talked lore, the game's PvP/PvE sliders and living universe concepts, guilds, and when players can expect to get in some dogfighting. Roberts also delved deeply into the crafting and economic aspects of the game.<br />
<br />
If you miss the days of carving out a name for yourself and your wares and/or cornering the market and building an economic empire, you'll definitely want to keep an eye on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/star-citizen/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/30/gdc-2013-chris-roberts-expounds-on-star-citizens-crafting-ec/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Chris Roberts expounds on Star Citizen's crafting, economy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/30/gdc-2013-chris-roberts-expounds-on-star-citizens-crafting-ec/">GDC 2013: Chris Roberts expounds on Star Citizen's crafting, economy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 30 Mar 2013 14:00:00 EST. On Tuesday, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe">SOE</a> shared <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/soe-talks-forgelight-engine-planetside-2-player-app/">a trailer</a> highlighting its Forgelight engine. The proprietary engine not only runs <em><a href="http://www.planetside2.com">PlanetSide 2</a></em> but will also be the foundation for all the studio's future games, including <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-next/">EverQuest Next</a>. The same press release also introduced the upcoming <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PS2</em></a> app. Although it won't be available to the public for a a bit, I had a chance to sit with senior art director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/tramell-isaac">Tramell Issac</a> to see the app in action as well as discuss the Forgelight engine and what's coming up for <em>PS2</em>.<br />
<br />
The app provides easy access to a ton of gameplay info, from personal stats to weapon information to real-time in-game map updates, and consequently there could be a marked decrease in workplace productivity in store for <em>PS2</em> fans!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-isaac-on-planetside-2s-new-app-forgelights-future/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: PlanetSide 2's new app and the future of Forgelight</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/29/gdc-2013-isaac-on-planetside-2s-new-app-forgelights-future/">GDC 2013: PlanetSide 2's new app and the future of Forgelight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 29 Mar 2013 11:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.ageofwushu.com/"><em>Age of Wushu</em></a> is just a couple of weeks away from launch at this point, catching up with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/snail-games">Snail Games</a> at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013">GDC</a> this year was one of our highest priorities. We tagged and bagged Associate Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/colin-miller/">Colin Miller</a> for a brief interview about the latest pre-launch decisions and preparations that the team is making.<br />
<br />
Miller had a lot to say about the tweaks and improvements that have been done to this martial arts sandbox. A huge amount of work has been poured into cleaning up the localization over the beta period, not to mention the interface. "Most of our feedback was pretty negative on the UI that we had in place, so we've been trying to rework that a bit," he said. "Hopefully there's going to be some improvements there."<br />
<br />

How many times have you found yourself asking, "Why won't the devs just listen?!" For any loyal MMO fan, it can be extremely frustrating to see feedback seemingly get ignored, and sometimes it feels as if there's a huge wall separating the fans from the developers.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Linda-Carlson/">Linda Carlson</a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/SOE/">SOE's</a> Director of Global Community Relations, spoke with Massively at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/PAX-East-2013/">PAX East</a> to talk about SOE's efforts to break down that wall and improve the relationship between players and developers into something that's more collaborative, rather than contentious. Whether you're the most loyal SOE fan or someone who's vowed never to play another SOE game, you might be surprised at what she has to say.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-soes-linda-carlson-on-the-state-of-the-community/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAX East 2013: SOE's Linda Carlson on the state of the community</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/pax-east-2013-soes-linda-carlson-on-the-state-of-the-community/">PAX East 2013: SOE's Linda Carlson on the state of the community</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 11:00:00 EST. We first learned about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online/">DC Universe Online's</a></em> housing system last fall at SOE Live, where we got the scoop on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/20/soe-live-2012-a-deeper-look-at-dcuos-housing-lairs/">personal lairs</a> coming in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Home-Turf/">Home Turf</a> DLC from creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jens-andersen">Jens Andersen</a>. At that time, he also shared his vision of expanding to include league housing sometime in the future.<br />
<br />
While sitting down with Andersen for a chat at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a> yesterday, the conversation turned to the now two-month-old housing system. The discussion included how the community was utilizing this unique blend of housing and PvP duels. Andersen then shared some tips for decorating with an eye towards battles; he also hinted that league housing may be slated for making an appearance in one of the game's upcoming DLCs.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dcuos-andersen-talks-housing-hints-at-league-version/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: DCUO's Andersen talks housing, hints at league version</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dcuos-andersen-talks-housing-hints-at-league-version/">GDC 2013: DCUO's Andersen talks housing, hints at league version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 10:00:00 EST. Last fall, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/runewaker">Runewaker</a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/soe/">SOE</a> announced <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dragons-prophet">Dragon's Prophet</a></em>, a free-to-play fantasy game focused on -- you guessed it -- dragons. Since then, we've been treated to various videos detailing the classes, the starter zones, and other gameplay. Just last week the game entered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/14/dragons-prophet-flies-into-na-closed-beta-march-19/">closed beta</a> in North America, allowing select folks the chance to get in and test out the current stage of the game.<br />
<br />
This week, I joined those folks in-game during my hands-on and demo at this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2013/">GDC</a>. I was also able to talk with senior producer Todd Carson and associate producer Rod Haza as they demonstrated different aspects of the game at the convention. What delectable tidbits of information about classes, housing, and (of course) dragons did I uncover? The answer awaits after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/">Dragon's Prophet</a></strong></p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773073"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunters-hold-main-hut_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773074"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunters-hold-main-gate_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773075"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/windhunter-troll-mage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/underworld-port-airship_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/photos/dragons-prophet/#5773077"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/massively.joystiq.com/media/2013/03/tahkar-village-lake_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-demo-and-hands-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet demo and hands-on</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/28/gdc-2013-dragons-prophet-demo-and-hands-on/">GDC 2013: Dragon's Prophet demo and hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:00:00 EST. The Massively Bothan spy network is at it again; there are just too many unanswered questions about the new <a href="http://swtor.com"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> expansion. We know the primary focus of <a href="http://swtor.com/rothc"><em>Rise of the Hutt Cartel</em></a> is on the contested world of Makeb, but what about these rumors of additional content? Does this expansion have more to offer? We cornered Executive Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-hickman/">Jeff Hickman</a> and interrogated him until he spilled the beans. And since our IT-O droid was feeling frisky and our <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;ved=0CDgQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fstarwars.wikia.com%2Fwiki%2FBavo_Six&amp;ei=hU9TUZLXCcqhigKFiYH4CA&amp;usg=AFQjCNEyQLeSH1yhybPgK5DTuDRMSwZJ6g&amp;sig2=C2Oryc7WuChXWVDcPIDALg&amp;bvm=bv.44442042,d.cGE">Bavo Six</a> supply was ample, we asked Hickman a couple of question regarding the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/21/bioware-swtor-servers-teeming-with-people/">state of the game blog</a> he posted on the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic/"><em>SWTOR</em></a> website as well.</div>
