<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Turbine">Turbine's</a> posted a <a href="http://www.lotro.com/gameinfo/devdiaries/239-developer-diary-creating-a-new-class-the-warden">new developer diary</a> that exposes the creative and mechanical processes of designing the Warden, one of the new classes coming in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mines-of-moria">Mines of Moria</a></em>. There's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/new-mines-of-moria-warden-and-rune-keeper-screenshots-released/">something for everyone</a> in the diary from the inspiration of the Warden to its gambit combat mechanic. We don't get an in-depth look at gambits and instead get a more introductory look at how they function. Thankfully we didn't come out of the read-through confused, in fact we felt like Turbine did a good job of laying the groundwork for understanding the class even before it hits retail.<br /><br />Anyone who's watched movies like 300 or Troy is definitely going to fall in love with the Warden. Not that the class is exactly like the Spartan soldier led by Leonidas -- it evokes that imagery a bit, though. We can't wait to see the Warden in action on our monitors <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/mines-of-moria-gets-a-november-18th-release-date/">in just a months time</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/lotro-dev-diary-looks-back-at-creating-the-warden-class/">LotRO dev diary looks back at creating the Warden class</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 17:00:00 EST. <a href="http://planetside.station.sony.com/"><em>PlanetSide</em></a> doesn't get much attention these days. It didn't get much attention when it was fresh on the market either. It has always seemed like a clunky, not-quite-right prototype for what a massively-multiplayer-first-person-shooter <em>could</em> be. But some folks remember their time spent there quite fondly, including <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com">Rock, Paper, Shotgun</a>'s Quintin Smith.<br /><br />A few days ago he <a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2008/09/05/planetside-the-1/">wrote up an article</a> about how veterans of the game fondly share war stories, and then provided his own epic tale. It's a great story that shows how players with good humor can turn a game-crushing bug into the gaming experience of a lifetime.<br /><br />The story resembles the <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416449/">Battle of Thermopylae</a>; one nation is forced (by a bug) to the brink of annihilation. It's interesting because it's presumably the one time any faction in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside"><em>PlanetSide</em></a> was faced with the possibility of complete and final loss of a war that's rigged to be impossible to lose (or win). We recently brought up <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/07/the-daily-grind-are-the-stakes-too-low-in-modern-pvp/">the question of stakes in PvP</a>, so this new RPS article is topical! Amusingly, the article is also not entirely dissimilar to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/06/14/liveblogging-massivelys-planetside-assault/">our own <em>PlanetSide</em> experience.</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09/09/planetside-veteran-remembers-the-battle-of-forseral/">PlanetSide veteran remembers the Battle of Forseral</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Tue, 09 Sep 2008 20:00:00 EST. Why invent a new franchise when you can adapt one that already exists? Well, if we're talking about translating videogames to cinema, there are at least 3 reasons against that we can think of right away: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Fighter:_The_Movie"><em>Street Fighter</em>: The Movie</a>, <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Dragon_%28film%29">Double Dragon</a></em>, and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_%28film%29">Doom</a></em>. Oh, and the entire body of work of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uwe_Boll">Uwe Boll</a>.<br /><br />With such a history of failure, why does Hollywood keep banking on videogames as good sources of material? Because it's always desperate for the next big hit, and adaptation is seen as being easier than originality, even though by now it's apparent that it's not quite as simple as it seems. An even better question is: why exactly don't these translations work? What is it about games that makes for poor films? Let's see if we can answer this question and assess the potential success/failure of some upcoming MMO movies.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/upcoming-mmo-movies-and-why-theyll-suck/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Upcoming MMO movies (and why they'll suck)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://massively.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/upcoming-mmo-movies-and-why-theyll-suck/">Upcoming MMO movies (and why they'll suck)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 11:30:00 EST.
