Star Wars: The Old Republic's 1.3 patch is officially here. We've been looking forward to it for some time now, mostly on account of the adaptive gear upgrades, group finder, and ranked warzones.

The Legacy system is also due for an update, so BioWare is allowing players to focus on the portions of the game they like best to customize their alt character leveling.

In terms of gear, BioWare says it expects to see "more eccentric-looking groups tackling high-level operations" thanks to the adaptive mechanics. These changes allow players to wear their favorite social gear into combat while still enjoying the bonuses gained from their best combat gear.

Check out the full 1.3 patch notes at the official SWTOR website.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's upcoming patch 1.3 looks like it's going to be bringing a bunch of fun goodies for the crafters in its playerbase. BioWare has posted a new update on the SWTOR official site to give players a look at some of the changes coming in the patch. For starters, we have the new adaptive gear weight system. When a character or companion is equipped with a piece of social armor with the adaptive armor weight, that character will automatically "use it to maximum effect, gaining the benefits of the highest armor weight [the character] can equip."

The big crafting-related feature hitting in 1.3, however, is the addition of augment tables. BioWare has noticed that crafted items with augment slots (which are created only through a critical crafting success) are almost disproportionately powerful due to their "exceptional stat potential", which the devs say is "indicative of a systemic inequity between different types of items." Augment tables, which will be accessible through the current item modification stations, aim to fix this by allowing players to add augment slots to existing items without having to rely on a critical crafting success. Players can acquire additional slots by paying a flat cost of credits at an item modification station or by using an augment kit crafted by Armormechs, Synthweavers, and Armstechs. The full system is a little too complex to delve into in this post, however, so if the idea of augment tables piqued your interest, head on over to the full post to read more.

Star Wars: The Old Republic talks adaptive gear, augment tables originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 17:00:00 EST.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is gonna get some mighty fine updates with the onset of patch 1.3. Game Designer Daniel Erickson had a chat with PC Gamer to shed some light on the changes in the upcoming patch.

Players in SWTOR don't like standing still. As Erickson says: "You can craft on the move, run [war zones] from anywhere, and basically never slow down -- except when looking for a group." To put an end to that difficulty, 1.3 will include a LFG interface that players can use to find a pick-up group to run with (except for Hard Mode Operations, which aren't really designed for uncoordinated PUGs). The tool won't work cross-server, but that's because the dev team is looking to move to servers with a much, much higher population cap in the near future.

The patch will add new perks to the legacy system, most of which are aimed at customizing the way players level their alts. With a high enough legacy and enough credits, players could use XP perks to skip side quests altogether, although Erickson points out that that there are perks for Bonus Series quests that may tempt players to visit planets they've previously left alone.

The last bundle of tidings of great joy for the patch is directed at gear. There's a fine balance between freedom of dress and the importance of visual distinction, and SWTOR aims to find it by allowing "social gear" to be worn anywhere. Additionally, "almost every single item in the game" will get customization options thanks to augment slots. Players can use augment slots on gear to add, well, augments, which will allow them to further customize their character and playstyle.

The Old Republic interview on patch 1.3 covers LFG, perks, and gear originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 23 May 2012 18:00:00 EST. A long time ago on a server far, far away, the Imperial forces BioWare prepared a Star Wars: The Old Republic update to rule the online world: patch 1.3. Called Allies, patch 1.3 will usher in a group finder, character transfers, and legacy perks.

The group finder will aid in banding together interested adventurers to tackle operations and flashpoints. Lead Designer Daniel Erickson said that the time is ripe for the feature, as players are spread out in levels and are rolling plenty of alts. Saying that BioWare wants to "respect the communities" that have formed, Erickson reports that the group finder will not be cross-server.

He also revealed some of the other key features for patch 1.3. Additional perks to the Legacy system will allow players to customize their experience; we'll see new ports, earlier access to mounts, and bonus XP modifiers for PvP. The patch will also change social gear to fit the armor type of the class using it, server transfers, and the ability to add augments to any crafting items. Looking past 1.3, Erickson promises a "return to big content" with patch 1.4.

If you're a fan of the SWTOR novels, you'll also be delighted to hear that Drew Karpyshyn announced that his next novel, Annihilation, is scheduled for November 13th.

Ia! Ia! Akylios f'htagn! You may have (read: should have, and if you haven't go do so now) seen our hands-on impressions article covering the new raid coming with RIFT's patch 1.3, Waves of Madness. The instance takes place inside of the abandoned Dwarven city of Hammerknell, where Akylios -- the Dragon of the plane of water and the object of worship of the Abyssal Cult -- has long been imprisoned. The cult has now breached the ancient stronghold and is in the process of awakening its aquatic master.
In a new walkthrough video from Trion Worlds, VP of Development Russ Brown gives RIFT players a sneak-peek at the world event that will accompany the opening of Hammerknell's long-sealed doors. Once the doors have been opened, we're treated to a tour of the halls of the city itself, where the ghosts of fallen Dwarves and Abyssal cultists alike stand to prevent Telara's heroes from interrupting Akylios' awakening. The video shows off four of the raid's bosses, including Akylios himself, so those of you wanting to avoid spoilers can consider yourselves warned. Russ also takes some time to stop and admire the hauntingly lovely architecture and lighting of the deserted city, which is truly stunning. Any RIFT players who don't mind a few minor spoilers and who want to get a look at the upcoming content can click on past the cut for the full video.

Continue reading Trion Worlds takes players on a tour of RIFT's upcoming Hammerknell raid

Trion Worlds takes players on a tour of RIFT's upcoming Hammerknell raid originally appeared on Massively on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 14:00:00 EST. With patch 1.2 fading in the rearview mirror, RIFT players have turned their attention to the incoming patch 1.3 due on June 22nd. Titled Waves of Madness, the update will kick off a new world event and add an additional tier of endgame content in the form of an additional raid.

We got the opportunity to dive into 1.3 early at E3, all while a petite seven-foot-tall dev perched on our shoulder and gave us running commentary. Patch 1.3's crown jewel is a 20-person raid in the ancient fortress of Hammerknell, which was built by folks who thought it'd be a smashing idea to cram evil spirits into runes and then use that as the foundation. Sounds to us a lot like building a summer camp on top of a desecrated native burial ground, but we're sure these architects had good intentions.

Surprise, surprise, the spirits started to ooze out into Hammerknell and tore up the place. To make matters worse, Hammerknell is the prison of a water dragon -- and the water plane started to come to its rescue. So the Dwarves decided to treat it like an illegal toxic dump by sealing up the fortress, whistling innocently, and conveniently forgetting it until another raid area was needed.

But it's not as simple as just unlocking the front door and marching in to claim some loot! Hit the jump as we walk you through the process of down-and-dirty archaeology!
Continue reading E3 2011: Hands on with RIFT's 1.3 update

E3 2011: Hands on with RIFT's 1.3 update originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 17:30:00 EST. As most people well know, the big ability changes that came with patch 1.3 were not accompanied by the tweak to attributes as originally planned. Instead, they were bumped to the next patch, 1.4. The only snag was, they never really expounded on what these changes were going to be. That is, of course, until today.

The basic rundown is that attributes have been given new utility, to allow people to tweak their builds for their own personal goals. Points in Body will add addition armor for those concerned with survivability, points in Mind will bump up the damage of Logos abilities, and points in Spirit will increase the likelihood of delivering a critical hit. In addition, the health levels for all characters is being bumped up to better emphasize the role of healing in combat. The way it works currently, if your armor is stripped away, you're basically dead in the water -- it only takes a few good hits to deplete all of your health. By making the health bar bigger, healers actually have a chance to apply their skills before their buddies wipe.

1.4 isn't on the PTR just yet, but Sage is encouraging people to try it out while it's still being tweaked so they can get some good feedback on it.
TR attribute changes unveiled, coming in 1.4 originally appeared on Massively on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 16:30:00 EST. As reported to you yesterday, patch 1.3 of Tabula Rasa went live yesterday, bringing in many of the changes, fixes, and additions that we'd been salivating over for weeks. The addition of Military Surpluses, which allow players to auction off crafting items and old or unused gear, was among our favorite new things to play with (along with the change in itemization), because it gave some value to those AFS credits we'd been hoarding since launch. And while there were kinks in the repair numbers that got ironed out yesterday, there appear to be more bugs within the Military Surplus of which we weren't initially aware. From the official website:

Some players are reporting their auctions from yesterday are currently missing their date and time. We are investigating this issue, but so far, it does not appear that items are at risk. We will post an update as soon as we have it. Thank you for your patience.

It didn't sound like too big a deal until I logged on this afternoon and found that some of my items on auction not only lacked a start or end date, but could not be taken down from the Military Surplus. What a bummer! Of course, I'd still recommend continuing to put up items as normal, because the market for purples is still so inflated that there's a tremendous amount of money to be made, bugs or not.
Military Surplus not without bugs originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 18:15:00 EST. After much to-do, Tabula Rasa's 1.3 patch finally went live today. The Military Surpluses are finally giving the game's currency some value, the Festive Seasonal Holiday Observance Flora look spectacular, and rare weapons are finally doing the sort of damage befitting their type. My purple Laser Cannon went from being a situational weapon to one that I can use in a huge melee to considerable success. I am overcome with holiday joy!

The only hiccup was a problem with the repair system, which DG has acknowledged and are currently hotfixing as we speak. The changes to itemization necessitated that rare weapons were more costly to repair, but something got fudged in the implementation, and when players logged back in post-patch, they found that the item health on their equipment was much lower than it was pre-patch, and that things were prohibitively expensive to fix. As of 4:30 EST, they pulled down the servers to fix this problem. The update on the website says that players that logged in before this fix will receive a "credit bonus" to compensate. We'll see what that means when the game comes back up in a little bit.
Tabula Rasa 1.3 patch delights despite repair hiccup originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 17:00:00 EST. The long awaited 1.3 patch will be hitting the live servers this week, heralding in some of the big change we've been talk about for weeks, including the Rage nerf, Military Surpluses, the itemization changes, and perhaps even the completely non-denominational Festive Seasonal Holiday Observance Flora. The only downside is that the promised respec will not apply to attributes. So you can reset all your ability points governing which skills you can use, but your attributes won't get another look until 1.4.

As excited as we are to see all these changes, perhaps more exciting is the rapid pace that Destination Games is setting for getting their content from the test servers onto the live servers. We reported on the changes to the build on the PTR only a week ago, and already they're set to go live? That's pretty impressive. It's much faster than certain other games that I won't mention by name.

Click here to check out the patch notes.
Tabula Rasa patch this week, attributes not part of respec originally appeared on Massively on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 10:00:00 EST. Feeling a bit down? Tired of your Soldier friends flaunting those fancy chainguns and graviton armor while you run through the Plains in motor assist? Sick of throwing heals at pick up groups who forget you're even there? Well hang in there friends, because Paul Sage has the answer for you! According to the erstwhile Tabula Rasa designer, many of the changes in patch 1.3 are aimed at shoring up some of the weaknesses in the Biotech and Medic trees, including an AE damage/heal for the Biotech and a big debuff ability in Disease for Medics.

Perhaps more importantly, Sage revealed that they're going to be tweaking the significance of attributes to try and make Health a more meaningful statistic, instead of its utility now, which is basically just a rough estimation of how long it will be until you die once your armor is worn down. These changes won't be coming until 1.4, so they may be over a month away, but it's reason enough to go back to level 5 and retry that Specialist clone again, if you haven't already.
Paul Sage promises changes for Specialist classes originally appeared on Massively on Thu, 06 Dec 2007 08:28:00 EST. It seems like it's been a long time coming, but many hotly-anticipated changes to Tabula Rasa are finally making their way onto the build currently running on the PTRs. Exactly which changes, you ask? Well, honestly, just about all of them. According to the patch notes they released today, Rage is getting its big nerf, Military Surpluses will be implemented to give the game's economy a serious kick in the butt, itemization has been changed to make item rarity factor into damage, players all get a free respec, and of course, there are tons of bug fixes, skill tweaks, and even a few new missions.

There's no ETA on this patch going live, but the preface to the patch fixes seems to indicate that it might be another few weeks. According to the notes, "We are giving players patches earlier in the development process now - so this patch will NOT be going to the live servers. We will have another patch going on the test server in the near future that will be closer to a 'live' version." Giving it a bigger lead time seems like a good idea, but the sooner they can get these fixes live, the sooner general chat will stop being a non-stop Rageathon.
TR 1.3 patch heralds in big changes on PTR originally appeared on Massively on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 19:27:00 EST.
