This week saw the world's largest annual LAN party get underway as Sweden played host to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dreamhack">DreamHack Summer 2013</a> and a series of live cash-prize competitive game tournaments. <a href="http://leagueoflegends.com/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> had the biggest showing, with a dedicated 1,200-person stage for its $30,000 DreamHack Championship tournament. <a href="http://heroesofnewerth.com/"><em>Heroes of Newerth</em></a> presented the $30,000 HoNTour grand finals with livestreaming and commentary from the Honcast crew. <a href="http://dota2.com/"><em>Dota 2</em></a> launched its own huge $46,600 tournament for the event, but fans have been up in arms about the tiny seating area reserved for their game.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard-entertainment">Blizzard</a> revealed more details on its upcoming console release of <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a>, from skill and runes to transferring your co-op characters between consoles. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/path-of-exile"><em>Path of Exile</em></a> tackled the issue of RMT head-on by locking currency items to new players' accounts until one of their characters hits level 25 and revealed that thousands of players are being banned each week for botting and RMT spam. Indie MOBA <a href="http://thebladeremains.com/skara"><em>Skara</em></a> also dropped a gameplay trailer this week and was at E3 to show the game off, but things aren't looking good for its kickstarter campaign.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/not-so-massively-dreamhack-2013-news-from-e3-and-path-of-exil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Not So Massively: Dreamhack 2013, news from E3, and Path of Exile battles RMT</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/not-so-massively-dreamhack-2013-news-from-e3-and-path-of-exil/">Not So Massively: Dreamhack 2013, news from E3, and Path of Exile battles RMT</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 20:00:00 EST. Are you looking for a new character to play in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag//dark-vale">Dark Vale's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/forge"><em>Forge</em></a> PvP title? Look no further than Tinker, who is the game's next piece of free DLC.<br />
<br />
Tinker is available in the live game starting today, and Dark Vale has posted some teaser info -- including three gameplay videos -- on <em>Forge's</em> official forums. You can also get a load of Tinker's cata pad, armored booth, barricade, buzz saw, turret, and more via the clips that we've embedded just past the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/catapult-your-friends-and-foes-with-forges-new-tinker-character/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Catapult your friends and foes with Forge's new Tinker character</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/catapult-your-friends-and-foes-with-forges-new-tinker-character/">Catapult your friends and foes with Forge's new Tinker character</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 19:00:00 EST. With <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Issue-7/">Issue #7 A Dream to Kill</a></em> inching closer and closer, my anticipation for the new auxiliary weapon coming to <em><a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com/">The Secret World</a></em> is reaching near impossible heights. I'll admit it: As a pyro at heart, I am giddy with the thought of wrapping my hands around a permanent flamethrower! And I'm certainly not alone in that sentiment, either.<br />
<br />
But an excitement for the new weapon doesn't diminish any of the current ones that are already in game; each auxiliary weapon -- the rocket launcher, the chainsaw, the quantum brace, and the whip -- is awesome in its own right with distinct skills and style. Is one right for you? Heck yeah! If you aren't taking advantage of an auxiliary weapon, you are depriving yourself of some extra oomph in your fights, not to mention an eighth active and passive skill on your hot bar.<br />
<br />
How do you know which one is better for you? Honestly, you needn't choose <em>just</em> one; as with regular weapons, you can earn all four. But with a hefty price of 35 SP per weapon, payable all at once, it's impossible to get more than one at a time. So which do you choose first? And then how do you go about getting it? This guide will give a general overview of the four current auxiliary weapons and the paths to acquiring them.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/chaos-theory-a-guide-to-auxiliary-weapons-in-the-secret-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chaos Theory: A guide to auxiliary weapons in The Secret World</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/chaos-theory-a-guide-to-auxiliary-weapons-in-the-secret-world/">Chaos Theory: A guide to auxiliary weapons in The Secret World</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. If your primary complaint about MOBAs is that they move too quickly, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arena-of-heroes/"><em>Arena of Heroes</em></a> might be something that lands a bit more in your comfort zone. Developed by <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sneaky-games/">Sneaky Games</a>, <em>Arena of Heroes</em> is a turn-based, tactical MOBA that focuses more on strategy than on twitch-clicking hard skills.<br />
<br />
Essentially, you and another player square off in an arena (duh), each controlling a team of four heroes in a battle for supremacy. It's your basic MOBA fare, but with a smaller battle zone and a slower, more deliberate pace. You and your opponent receive two minutes each to make your moves, or you can try the game's asynchronous mode and play several games simultaneously, with up to two days being allotted for turns.<br />
<br />
<em>Arena of Heroes</em> has officially shifted into open beta, so you're free to check it out at your leisure. You can also read <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/04/19/hands-on-with-arena-of-heroes-turn-based-gameplay/">our hands-on with the game</a> for a more detailed look at its inner workings.<br />
<br />
The free-to-play game will launch on PC, Mac, iOS, and, at some point, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ouya/">Ouya</a> and Android.<br />

Last week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/e3-2013-ubisoft-announces-mmo-shooter-the-division/">E3 reveal</a> of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ubisoft">Ubisoft's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-division"><em>The Division</em></a> MMO shooter was met with some oohs, some ahhs, and some WTFs as PC gamers realized that the software giant was ignoring their platform of choice to focus on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.<br />
<br />
What's a disgruntled gamer to do? Sign a petition, of course, and as of press time, over 50,000 disgruntled gamers have expressed their desire to see the Tom Clancy-style title find a home on the PC. According to <a href="http://www.dsogaming.com/news/ubisoft-asks-pc-gamers-to-show-interest-about-the-division-petition-almost-hits-its-initial-goal/">Dark Side of Gaming</a> and <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/06/17/the-division-ubisoft-encourages-players-to-sign-pc-petition-over-50000-do/">PC Gamer</a>, <em>Division</em> developers encouraged potential players to "sign petitions, get on forums, and post their requests."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/over-50-000-gamers-petition-ubisoft-for-a-pc-version-of-the-divi/">Over 50,000 gamers petition Ubisoft for a PC version of The Division</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 16:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/undead-labs/">Undead Labs</a>' latest game for Xbox Live, <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/state-of-decay/">State of Decay</a></em>, is a resounding success. The game moved over 250,000 copies <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/08/state-of-decay-sells-over-250k-units-in-first-48-hours/">in its first 48 hours of release</a>, landing it the title of "Fastest Selling Xbox Live Game that isn't <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/minecraft"><em>Minecraft</em></a>." However, one successful game does not guarantee another, and Undead is still at the mercy of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/microsoft">Microsoft</a> when it comes to getting its next game off the ground.<br />
<br />
The studio is set to begin work on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Class4/">Class4</a></em>, an MMO follow-up to <em>State of Decay</em>, but cannot proceed until Microsoft gives it the go-ahead. According to Undead's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sanya-weathers/">Sanya Weathers</a>, none of this can happen until the two parties reach a "mutually agreeable contract." She also noted that the two companies must agree on the goals of the project and on where the technology will be by the time <em>Class4</em> finishes its multi-year development cycle.<br />
<br />
According to Weathers, the discussion between Microsoft and Undead is "in progress."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/undead-labs-still-negotiating-with-microsoft-on-class4-mmo/">Undead Labs still negotiating with Microsoft on Class4 MMO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 15:00:00 EST. There are many things you could say about people who play <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/moba/">MOBAs</a>. Most of those things would be negative. Games in the MOBA bracket, most notably <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/league-of-legends/"><em>League of Legends</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/dota-2/"><em>Dota 2</em></a>, have a reputation for being unkind to new players, both in terms of the mechanical skill required to play and the vitriolic communities that tear apart new players for not being instantly granted that skill upon downloading the game.<br />
<br />
Conduct in MOBAs is so awful that it has become a design issue. Riot Games created <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/04/the-summoners-guidebook-making-league-of-legends-a-better-plac/">a Tribunal system</a> that allows players to report the bad behavior of others, and Valve has done <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/03/not-so-massively-elite-galaxy-lore-d3s-book-of-tyreal-and-do/">much the same thing</a>. Every new developer showing off an in-development MOBA is at some point asked the question, "How are you going to deal with all the jerks?" Built-in mechanisms for handling abusive teammates and opponents are now considered <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/e3-2013-infinite-crisis-super-punches-moba-flaws/">mandatory features</a>.<br />
<br />
There is no question that some MOBA players <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/25/over-one-percent-of-league-of-legends-players-have-been-banned/">are bad apples</a>. But something has always bothered me about the pigeonholing of these gamers into this negative space. Surely not all MOBA players are elitist snobs waiting to smack down any new player stupid enough to join a public match. Surely not all of these passionate gamers are horrible humans waiting in the dark to pounce on unsuspecting noobs with a barrage of verbal abuse; there have to be some friendly diamonds in the manure-piled rough.<br />
<br />
I swung by the first-ever Chicago <em>Dota 2</em> Open, billed as the biggest open <em>Dota 2</em> tournament in the Midwest, to find out.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/i-went-to-a-dota-2-tournament-and-not-one-person-called-me-a-noo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>I went to a Dota 2 tournament and not one person called me a noob</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/i-went-to-a-dota-2-tournament-and-not-one-person-called-me-a-noo/">I went to a Dota 2 tournament and not one person called me a noob</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 14:00:00 EST. I like <a href="http://www.wildstar-online.com"><em>WildStar</em></a> a lot. You knew from an early time that I liked the game's aesthetic and sense of humor, and as time went on it became clear that I also liked the mechanics and the approaches it has toward an endgame. When I finally got my first hands-on playtime with the game, I liked <em>that</em>, too. What I'm getting at here is that <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/WildStar/">WildStar</a></em> is currently fighting with <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> for the title of my absolute favorite MMO, and they both coexist in a space of <em>I want to play you both all the time</em>.<br />
<br />
But some people aren't in that boat. Some people aren't that wild about the game, even some people whom I work alongside. And that is <em>totally fine</em>.<br />
<br />
Last week's events made me decide to do one of my periodic column-topic-switches to discuss the fact that there is going to be bad press about <em>WildStar</em> out there, sometimes even bad press that complains about things that you don't think are relevant. And the best thing you can do is <em>be cool</em>.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-nexus-telegraph-its-all-right-if-people-dont-like-wildsta/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Nexus Telegraph: It's all right if people don't like WildStar</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-nexus-telegraph-its-all-right-if-people-dont-like-wildsta/">The Nexus Telegraph: It's all right if people don't like WildStar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 12:00:00 EST. Although sharing sound, music, and video from the <em><a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/">Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn</a></em> beta is still prohibited, testers' thoughts and screenshots from phase three <a href="http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/62123-Nda-partially-lifted?p=1000125#post1000125">are now allowed</a>. Taking advantage of that partial NDA lift, one creative beta participant has put together a montage of stills in video form to show off the upcoming reboot of the game. Wondering if you can glean what's going on from the screenshots alone? Don't worry -- he also added commentary to explain each shot.<br />
<br />
The nearly 33-minute montage includes character creation (<em>all</em> races have two genders to select from), the public quests (Fates), menus and the UI, combat, and a look at the updated graphics. Get a glimpse of the game for yourself in the video after the break.<br />

Ready for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/wurm-online"><em>Wurm Online's</em></a> summer update? It happens tomorrow, June 18th, and it's all about <a href="http://wurmonline.tumblr.com/post/52967515508/wurm-v1-1-summer-update-release-next-week">enhancing client performance</a> in the long-running browser-based sandbox. Also on tap are new housing extensions, fence types, mystical sorcery powers, and overhauls of the foraging and botanising system.<br />
<br />
The UI and the graphics are getting an overhaul, too, thanks to new creature models, animations, inventory grouping and more. So, yeah, it's a pretty substantial patch. You can read more about it at <em>Wurm's</em> official blog and be sure to check out our <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/07/second-wind-returning-to-wurm-online-is-a-process/">recent revisit</a> of the classic sandbox game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/wurm-onlines-summer-update-tweaks-graphics-ui-and-more/">Wurm Online's summer update tweaks graphics, UI, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 10:00:00 EST. With all the talk about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/guild-wars-2-celebrates-dragon-bash-festival-by-giving-us-stuff/">bashing stuff</a> lately, I can't help but envision a certain prehistoric child going around whacking everything with a club, "Bam! Bam! Bam!" Of course, who can blame the little tyke? There are definitely times in game that we've all wanted to swing a cudgel or two, be it a nerf design or a just-quitcher-whining bat.<br />
<br />
Destructive tendencies can even be harbored in the gentle hearts of your favorite <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-stream-team">Stream Team</a> hosts. A number of you can surely attest to that. Need proof? Just watch <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/livestream">Massively TV</a> and see for yourself. Warning: You may start to feel sympathy for those poor mobs...<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-stream-team-caveman-edition-june-17-23-2013/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Stream Team: Caveman edition, June 17 - 23, 2013</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-stream-team-caveman-edition-june-17-23-2013/">The Stream Team: Caveman edition, June 17 - 23, 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 09:00:00 EST. So the big <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3</a> MMO news centered on consoles this year, with existing titles like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/dc-universe-online"><em>DC Universe Online</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/planetside-2"><em>PlanetSide 2</em></a> as well as upcoming projects like <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-elder-scrolls-online"><em>The Elder Scrolls Online</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/final-fantasy-xiv"><em>Final Fantasy XIV's</em></a> reboot unveiling their plans for extensive console ports.<br />
<br />
For today's Daily Grind, we're interested to know what you think about the increased consolization of the MMO market. Do you think it's a good thing, or do you think it will ultimately water down what have traditionally been complex PC games? Are you planning to play any of the aforementioned titles on a console? How do you feel about the current console MMO trend?<br />

Tech 1 ships in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-online/"><em>EVE Online</em></a> used to be arranged in tiers that determined the cost and power of the ship and what level of the appropriate skill was required to fly it. This gave a sense of progression back in 2004 when all we had was frigates, cruisers, and battleships, but developers have since filled in the gaps between ship classes with destroyers, battlecruisers, strategic cruisers, and tech 2 ships of all shapes and sizes. In a recent game design initiative, CCP has been removing the tiers from within each tech 1 ship class by buffing the lower-tier ships up to the same rough power level as the largest ship in its class.<br />
<br />
The recent <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/odyssey"><em>Odyssey</em></a> expansion saw <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/02/eve-evolved-get-ready-for-odyssey/">the humble battleship buffed beyond all recognition</a>. The Megathron, Raven, Tempest, and Apocalypse all became extreme damage-dealing powerhouses, but the Dominix, Scorpion, Typhoon, and Armageddon were buffed the most. Each of them can now fit several monster setups, dealing upward of 1,000 damage per second or completely disabling enemy ships with energy neutralisers and electronic warfare. The build costs of these tier one battleships were more than doubled in the expansion, but prices are only slowly rising due to the existing stock on the market. That makes the tier one battleships incredibly cost-effective PvP powerhouses at the moment, and players are beginning to take advantage of it.<br />
<br />
In this week's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/eve-evolved/">EVE Evolved</a>, I experiment with PvP setups for the newly revamped Typhoon, Armageddon, Scorpion, and Dominix battleships.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/eve-evolved-fitting-battleships-for-pvp-in-odyssey/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EVE Evolved: Fitting battleships for PvP in Odyssey</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/eve-evolved-fitting-battleships-for-pvp-in-odyssey/">EVE Evolved: Fitting battleships for PvP in Odyssey</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. So <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3</a> happened this past week. If you're a Massively regular, you're no doubt aware of that since we spammed up our front page and your RSS feed with gobs of hands-on coverage including everything from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/the-crew">racing games</a> to <em><a href="http://www.elderscrollsonline.com">The Elder Scrolls Online</a></em>.<br />

One thing we didn't cover was <a href="http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/"><em>Star Citizen</em></a>, because thankfully, <a href="http://www.cloudimperiumgames.com/">Cloud Imperium's</a> upcoming space sim sandbox didn't bother with an official E3 presence.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/stick-and-rudder-on-star-citizens-e3-absence/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stick and Rudder: On Star Citizen's E3 absence</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/stick-and-rudder-on-star-citizens-e3-absence/">Stick and Rudder: On Star Citizen's E3 absence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 Jun 2013 14:00:00 EST. I remember playing <a href="http://iro.ragnarokonline.com/"><em>Ragnarok Online</em></a>, the first one, quite a while ago and semi-enjoying it. I liked the isometric views and even enjoyed some of the gameplay, but it was a bit of a mess much of the time. I walked away more confused than entertained. At the same time, I met reader after reader after reader who seemed to have grown up on the game. This "grind generation" was made of steely reserve and tougher stuff than I was because the game was notoriously grindy. How did they play it?<br />
<br />
Even now as I was looking for a few different views on <a href="http://playragnarok2.com/"><em>Ragnarok Online 2</em></a>, I came across a video <a href="http://youtu.be/NqF9PG549nQ">that was hosted by a player</a> who acknowledged the "boring grind" that left players with literally "nothing to do but level alts," yet he played the game to the max level, <em>several times</em>. If only we could get these guys to put that much energy into world peace, I might be having dinner in the middle of a former warzone right now!<br />
<br />
I found number two to be a bit like its older version but surprisingly modern and more fun than I thought. But only a <em>bit</em> more fun.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/rise-and-shiny-ragnarok-online-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rise and Shiny: Ragnarok Online 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/rise-and-shiny-ragnarok-online-2/">Rise and Shiny: Ragnarok Online 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 Jun 2013 12:00:00 EST. Here's a tip from your friendly <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/One-Shots/">One Shots</a> coordinator: If you send in a screenshot from a game that hardly ever gets featured in this column, there's a better-than-average chance that I'm going to bump it right up to the top of the pack. Case in point: this groovy shot from <a href="http://www.lineage2.com/en/"><em>Lineage II</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Reader Johnny said he played this game back in 2007: "Behind me we can see the endgame, the Baium Raid Boss. Baium resides on the 13th floor of a the Tower of Insolence, a massive, non-instanced hunting ground with 13 fully accessible and monster-packed floors. The weapon I am holding is a Flaming Dragon Skull, an A-grade blunt weapon."<br />
<br />
Be prepared for A-grade awesome screenshots and B-grade commentary as you forge on in this week's repository of player-submitted pictures!<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/one-shots-do-you-always-dress-like-that/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>One Shots: Do you always dress like that?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/16/one-shots-do-you-always-dress-like-that/">One Shots: Do you always dress like that?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sun, 16 Jun 2013 10:00:00 EST. While I'm totally rocking the minivan these days (no, I was never cool), I actually love my car. It's not just an object that transports me from point A to B; it's a mobile base of operation. It has hookups for my gadgets, diaper bags, DVD players, and so on. It's home away from home, as it should be.<br />
<br />
What about <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mount">our mounts in MMOs</a>? Most of them do nothing other than give us a nice increase in speed, with a select few granting us a pilot's license and clearing us for flight. But do they have functions other than just transporting us? Once in a while I read about a mount that allows you to pick up passengers, or one that offers a vending service, or even one <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/09/13/lotro-hands-over-war-steed-reins-in-dev-diary/">that fights alongside of you</a>.<br />
<br />
What do you think? Should mounts do something other than just transport, and if so, what?<br />

I have a pretty standard M.O. when it comes to my MMOs: Regardless of how various tutorials want to direct me, I wander off and explore the new world I find myself in. I love to poke around, look into corners, and see all there is to see. The same goes for any time a patch or expansion opens up new places to meander through. That's really just how I roll/run/fly/shamble/hop. So it should come as no surprise that I am excitedly awaiting the new lands of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/10/31/aion-4-0-introduces-new-region-of-katalam/">Katalam</a> and Danaria when <em><a href="http://na.aiononline.com/en/">Aion</a>:</em> <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Betrayal/">Dark Betrayal</a></em> launches on the 26th.<br />
<br />
I know that I am not alone in my anticipation, so for all those who are also looking forward to taking off into <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/aion"><em>Aion's</em></a> new realms, I've got something special for you. No, I can't let you into the game early (but if they ever open the door early for me, I'll prop it for you!), but I do have the next best thing to a first-hand experience: a visual tour.<br />
<br />
I've gotten a hold of -- legitimately, I swear -- a video and a number of screenshots showing off all <em>three</em> (yes, I said three) new zones, and I want to share them with you. <a href="http://penny-arcade.com/report/article/the-incredibly-true-story-of-how-diablo-3-on-the-consoles-was-almost-a-twin">Penny Arcade</a> reports that the console version of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/diablo-iii"><em>Diablo III</em></a> went through an interesting metamorphosis as it was ported over from the PC. A twin-stick approach was "one of the first prototypes," according to game director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/josh-mosqueira">Josh Mosqueira</a>.<br />
<br />
Ultimately, that particular control scheme didn't fly because of <em>Diablo III's</em> angled camera view. Also, "you can't blow stuff up or smash things if your thumb is on the right stick and the left stick," Mosqueira explained. You can read more on Penny Arcade's E3 <em>DIII</em> console hands-on via the link below.<br />

Good news, tank fans! <a href="http://worldoftanks.com/"><em>World of Tanks</em></a> is heading to the Xbox 360 soon. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/wargaming/">Wargaming.net</a>'s partnership with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/microsoft/">Microsoft</a> has been a huge milestone for both companies, as there hasn't been a large library of F2P games to grace the console's life. Although it's particularly late in the game's life to see <em>World of Tanks</em> hit the console market, transition to a controller-based system has actually been a good thing for the game.<br />
<br />
At this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a>, Massively talked with Wargaming's Jeremy Monroe a bit about the company's growth, <em>World of Tanks</em> on the 360, and future plans for game releases.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/e3-2013-world-of-tanks-is-blasting-its-way-to-the-360/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2013: World of Tanks is blasting its way to the 360</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/e3-2013-world-of-tanks-is-blasting-its-way-to-the-360/">E3 2013: World of Tanks is blasting its way to the 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. Nestled deep within the Sony booth at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3/">E3</a> amongst a horde of gamewatchers was the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/warframe/"><em>Warframe</em></a> demo. It's a PC title from <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/digital-extremes">Digital Extremes</a> that will be released on the PS4 platform at launch. Free for anyone subscribing to PSN, <em>Warframe</em> is a third-person shooter that is definitely undertaking some experimentation in the graphics and control departments.<br />
<br />
The PS4 demo was graphically superior to plenty of titles, running in full 1080P without a hitch or glitch in performance. Controls were responsive (although they took some getting used to), and playing with a handful of players was exhilarating at the Sony booth. I'm used to more of a keyboard-and-mouse control setup, but console fraggers will feel right at home.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/e3-2013-warframe-is-coming-to-a-ps4-near-you/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2013: Warframe is coming to a PS4 near you</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/e3-2013-warframe-is-coming-to-a-ps4-near-you/">E3 2013: Warframe is coming to a PS4 near you</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Jun 2013 16:00:00 EST. The third phase of <a href="http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>'s beta is here, and with it, <a href="http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/62123-Nda-partially-lifted?p=1000125#post1000125">the NDA is summarily gone</a>. Images from phase 3 can be posted; video and audio cannot. This is the fast track to finally being back in the game for real, to play your old characters once again, to enjoy the game again.<br />
<br />
Am I excited? Of course I am because I haven't been able to play yet. I'm writing this from the past, and by the time you read this, I will be awash in Eorzea.<br />
<br />
There was also a major industry event this week, one that's known officially as the Electronic Entertainment Expo and known more colloquially to everyone in the world as <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a>. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em> was there making an impression, revealing jobs at long last, and generally carrying on as if it owned the place. So let's talk a little bit about what we saw from E3 if you can tear yourself away from the beta client for, like, five minutes.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/the-mog-log-final-fantasy-xiv-beta-phase-e-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV beta phase (E)3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/the-mog-log-final-fantasy-xiv-beta-phase-e-3/">The Mog Log: Final Fantasy XIV beta phase (E)3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Jun 2013 14:00:00 EST. If a game has spent a year in beta with no launch in sight, good things are not generally around the corner. So it goes for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Salem/">Salem</a></em>, the early-America-themed permadeath sandbox MMO. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Paradox-Interactive/">Paradox Interactive</a> has decided to <a href="http://forum.salemthegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&amp;t=6800">separate from the title altogether</a>, leaving all costs and work associated with the game in the hands of the two-man development team at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Seatribe/">Seatribe</a>. The split will be final on July 8th, with a slow phase-out in place until then.<br />
<br />
According to the official announcement, both Paradox Interactive and Seatribe feel that this decision is for the health of the game now and in the future, and there are no immediate plans for a shutdown or anything of the sort. Players will be given a discount coupon for Paradox Interactive's online store and a free bundle of <em>Salem</em>'s microtransaction currency. What happens with the game after the handover is complete <a href="http://forum.salemthegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&amp;t=6800">remains to be seen</a>.<br />

One habit that I'm constantly trying to break myself of is assuming that everyone who reads this column or plays <a href="http://www.lotro.com"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> is going through (or has finished) the most recent content that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine's</a> pumped out. Over the past few weeks, I've had discussions with Massively staffers, guildmates, and podcast co-hosts who all have admitted to being way behind the content curve in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>LotRO</em></a>, many to the point where catching up to the endgame crowd seems like an insurmountable task.<br />
<br />
As a particular person asked me, "But what if I'm three expansions behind? Is it even worth paying for all of these expansions and pushing myself to get to Rohan?"<br />
<br />
This is a valid concern and obviously one that several folks have, so for today's column I want to talk to those of you who aren't level 85. Maybe you haven't even seen the interior of Moria yet, or maybe you have been following the most casual, sporadic path through Middle-earth possible over the years. Maybe the one-expansion-per-year pace is actually pushing you away from the game. Here's what I think will help.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/the-road-to-mordor-but-what-if-im-three-expansions-behind/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Road to Mordor: But what if I'm three expansions behind?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/15/the-road-to-mordor-but-what-if-im-three-expansions-behind/">The Road to Mordor: But what if I'm three expansions behind?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Sat, 15 Jun 2013 12:00:00 EST. I understand that some of our readers are concerned about some of the details regarding Massively One, so let's clear the air. Yes, in order to use Massively One, you do need to connect to the internet at least once an hour or your house and pets will be set on fire. But you should be online all the time anyway, and it's not as if the infrastructure ever suffers problems you can't foresee. Besides, the connection requirement is only for a small amount of personal data to enable features you don't want and never asked for, like preventing you from owning things you buy.<br />
<br />
For the record, this is not satire. Satire is subtle.<br />
<br />
Moving along, it's time for this week's installment of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/WRUP/">WRUP</a>, which can be found past the cut as usual. I had a friend once in <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com"><em>World of Warcraft</em></a> who had never taken part in a single dungeon. She knew she wasn't geared very well and hadn't built a very solid character, and she didn't feel like dragging others down. She focused instead on socializing through roleplaying and helping out lower-level players with extra money. That was fun for her, far more so than trying to force herself into the raiding endgame, and it was something she just couldn't do in a single-player environment.<br />
<br />
For some people, being social in an MMO means doing group content or nothing. For others, being social means putting on a musical performance in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Lord-of-the-Rings-Online/">Lord of the Rings Online</a></em> even while you prefer to solo rather than group to clear content. So what about you? How do you like to socialize in MMOs? Is it strictly through content, other activities, or a mixture of both?<br />
<br />

Lower the portcullis and man the murder holes -- sieges are coming to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dawn-of-Fantasy/"><em>Dawn of Fantasy</em></a> next week! <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Reverie-World-Studios/">Reverie World Studios</a> announced that it's releasing <em>Siegeworks</em>, the first expansion for the MMORTS, starting next week.<br />
<br />
The free expansion <a href="http://www.reverieworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7698">will be rolled out in three phases</a>. The first chunk of content will be released on June 16th, followed by the expansion's debut on Steam on the 18th. The studio plans a third phase for the 26th that will include delayed features and additional polish.<br />
<br />
<em>Siegeworks </em>will double the number of towns in the game, add siege engines and units, and present a new pathfinding system. On top of that, players will be able to team up for epic batles via the new guild alliance feature.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/dawn-of-fantasy-siegeworks-expansion-coming-to-steam/">Dawn of Fantasy: Siegeworks expansion coming to Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 21:00:00 EST. The third phase of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Final-Fantasy-XIV/">Final Fantasy XIV</a></em>'s beta has started, so I don't see why you're still here.<br />
<br />
What? All right, there's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/11/world-of-warplanes-soaring-to-open-beta-on-july-2/">the open beta date</a> for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/World-of-Warplanes/">World of Warplanes</a>, </em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/11/archeage-beta-signups-are-live/">English beta signups</a> for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/ArcheAge/">ArcheAge</a></em>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/e3-2013-dayz-shows-off-its-standalone-gameplay/">a look at the standalone client</a> for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/DayZ/">DayZ</a></em>, and the start of closed beta for <a href="http://soldierfront2.aeriagames.com/"><em>Soldier Front 2</em></a>. I guess all of that stuff happened this week. And I guess <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Neverwinter/">Neverwinter</a></em> is <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/the-end-of-beta-days-invasion-is-coming-to-neverwinter/">running an event</a> before it <em>really</em> launches on the 20th. Oh, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a> was this week, so of course there was a lot of talk about games that are currently in beta or are heading into open beta in the near future. Plus, we probably still have our full list of betas just past the cut, because that's here most weeks and it's kind of silly to remove it.<br />
<br />
But really. <em>FFXIV</em> beta. That's the important takeaway, right? Right.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/betawatch-june-8-14-2013/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Betawatch: June 8 - 14, 2013</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/betawatch-june-8-14-2013/">Betawatch: June 8 - 14, 2013</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 20:00:00 EST. Certain phrases just tend to stick in my craw. For example, the idea that <em>back in the day</em> MMORPGs really supported roleplaying, but <em>now</em> they <em>don't</em> any more. You can't really <em>lose</em> yourself in modern games. You get the idea; I've talked about this before.<br />
<br />
The calls that roleplaying is dead are quite convincing except for the fact that roleplaying continues and does not appear to be going anywhere. If anything, I'd argue (from anecdotes, so without much scientific merit) that roleplaying populations seem to be <em>expanding</em>, which makes sense, since with more and more people playing games online, more and more of them are going to be totally keen on pretending to be an elf.<br />
<br />
But I can understand the sentiment because from another perspective it can seem <em>totally</em> on the mark. So I'm going to just go for the simple version and discuss the ways in which things haven't changed all that much after all.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/storyboard-roleplaying-hasnt-gone-anywhere/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Storyboard: Roleplaying hasn't gone anywhere</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/storyboard-roleplaying-hasnt-gone-anywhere/">Storyboard: Roleplaying hasn't gone anywhere</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 19:00:00 EST. This will be my last week using the new <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/chrome/devices/chromebook-pixel/">Chromebook Pixel</a>, at least here on Massively. I will continue to look at its techier side of things <a href="http://www.beauhindman.com">on my personal blog</a>, just as I did with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/all-in-one-project/">the original Chromebook All-In-One project</a>. The shorter time frame for this series can be explained by the fact that Chromebooks do admittedly cut out a lot of the browser-based MMOs out there by not allowing the usage of Unity or other plugins. Flash is allowed, but Adobe and other companies' recent disapproval of the use of Flash for mobile platforms came with a reason: It's often hard to run. Once HTML5 becomes more standard thanks to publishers <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/05/09/runescape-coming-to-tablets-this-year/">like Jagex</a>, I'll be able to comment more on that. It's also important to note that the Pixel is really just a nicer Samsung model, so you can refer to the older posts as well.<br />
<br />
I want to encourage everyone who is interested in Chromebooks to check out the <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/">Samsung ARM-based Chromebook</a> I talked about last time. It's very inexpensive and quite literally does everything that the Pixel does, albeit on a much smaller screen that is attached to a weaker device that has a much lower build quality. Still, my time with the Pixel has amazed me with a wonderful, touchable screen, but the Pixel has also convinced me that the Samsung should be the flagship device for Chromebook, hopefully kept at the same price range while slowly improving in quality.<br />
<br />
Now, let's talk about the games. I found a few that run much better on the Pixel's beefier stats, but please refer to <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/all-in-one-project/">my Samsung coverage for 30 MMOs</a> that run on both machines. The following list is especially good for touchscreens.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/mmobility-the-chromebook-all-in-one-project-more-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MMObility: The Chromebook 'All-In-One' project: More games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/mmobility-the-chromebook-all-in-one-project-more-games/">MMObility: The Chromebook 'All-In-One' project: More games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> has not one, not two, but three website updates that should scratch your stuck-at-work-on-a-Friday-but-thinking-about-<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild-Wars-2</em></a> itch.<br />
<br />
The first is a <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/community-news/bash-the-dragon-smash-the-dragon/">Dragon Bash video</a> featuring the dev team doing its best <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/guild-wars-2-celebrates-dragon-bash-festival-by-giving-us-stuff/">Schuster family</a> pinata-destroying imitation. Next we have another <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/community-news/guild-wars-2-video-celebrating-dragon-bash-at-rpc/">video blurb</a>, this time chronicling Dragon Bash shenanigans at Cologne, Germany's RPC 2013 event. The third and final update concerns the Dragon Bash climax coming your way on <a href="https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/attend-the-effigy-lighting-ceremony-on-june-18/">June 18th</a>. The festival will conclude with a single-player instance called Memories on the Pyre, which you can read about via the source link below. You can see the two videos behind the break.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/arenanet-teases-gw2-dragon-bash-finale-event/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>ArenaNet teases GW2 Dragon Bash finale event</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/arenanet-teases-gw2-dragon-bash-finale-event/">ArenaNet teases GW2 Dragon Bash finale event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 17:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/mythic/">Mythic's</a> been field testing <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ultima-forever/"><em>Ultima Forever</em></a> in the Canadian iOS market, and the studio now says that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/ultima-forever-drops-most-freemium-prices-after-canadian-beta/">it's making significant changes to the in-app pricing</a> based on feedback from players. Most of the changes will swing in the players' favor, including lowered repair costs and cheaper storage space increases. The studio is also considering a one-time buyout fee to get rid of all freemium aspects, although this is not a given.<br />
<br />
One factor did increase in price, however. The studio raised the cost to loot high-quality chests, as the devs found that once players nabbed the good gear inside, they had less incentive to keep on looting.<br />
<br />
Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/carrie-gouskos/">Carrie Gouskos</a> said that the changes were necessary to keep from souring players' experiences. "You've got to get people to love your game first," she said, going on to remark that when player loyalty is established, revenue will follow.<br />

<div>Oh, Norrath. I don't know what it is about you, but for some reason I just can't stay away. I probably fell in love with the setting in the early 2000s, when I took my first (somewhat) serious dive into the original <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/everquest">EverQuest</a></em>. In my eyes, it's the quintessential high-fantasy universe when it comes to MMOs, and every time I'm eyeing my bookcase and I catch sight of my <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Planes-of-Power/">Planes of Power</a></em> instruction manual, I get this strange urge to have another visit. But for this edition of <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/second-wind">Second Wind</a>, I figured I'd take a look at the <em>other </em>Norrath instead.<br />
<br />
Let me tell you something about <a href="http://www.massively.com/category/everquest-ii"><em>EverQuest II</em></a> that I quickly discovered: It is absolutely immense. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it's, in many ways, overwhelming. I imagine I could spend 25, 50, even 100 hours with this game and still feel as if I had only dipped my toes into the sea. That aside, I'm still brimming with things I'd like to talk about, so how about joining me after the cut?</div><p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/second-wind-everquest-ii-part-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Second Wind: EverQuest II, part one</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/second-wind-everquest-ii-part-one/">Second Wind: EverQuest II, part one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 16:30:00 EST. To an outsider, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/CCP-Games/">CCP Games'</a> focus on <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/EVE-Online-s/">EVE Online's</a></em> player panel, comics, incoming television series about player adventures, and museum induction show just how much the company works to earn its players' respect, which might sound weird for studio running a cutthroat PvP sandbox. But I've always felt as if I made stronger personal attachments through high-stakes PvP than through most other gaming activities. I don't play <em>EVE</em> or its console cousin <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DUST-514/">DUST 514</a></em>, but after stopping by the CCP booth for my interview and hands-on at <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a> yesterday, I feel as if I should be doing more than reading and writing about it.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/e3-2013-dust-514-and-eves-virtual-reality-demo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2013: DUST 514 and EVE's virtual reality demo</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/e3-2013-dust-514-and-eves-virtual-reality-demo/">E3 2013: DUST 514 and EVE's virtual reality demo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 16:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/hex/">HEX</a></em>. It's a difficult concept to grasp: a massively multiplayer online trading card game, combining elements of roleplaying goodness and the thrill of building a deck of powerful cards to combat the next evil underlord monster.<br />
<br />
At this year's <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013">E3</a>, Massively sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cory-Jones/">Cory Jones</a>, president of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Cryptozoic-Studios/">Cryptozoic Studios</a>, to get the skinny on what <em>HEX</em> is all about.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/e3-2013-taking-another-look-at-hex/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2013: Taking another look at HEX</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/e3-2013-taking-another-look-at-hex/">E3 2013: Taking another look at HEX</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 15:30:00 EST. I eagerly consumed about 45 minutes of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-elder-scrolls-online/">The Elder Scrolls Online</a></em> during <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013/">E3</a> this week. I stayed glued to my keyboard and headphones until the expo hall closed and I was told to clear out. Part of this time was <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/e3-2013-bethesda-talks-next-gen-consoles-endgame-and-characte/">spent interviewing</a> the nearest willing Bethesda employee, and every other second was hauling Orc butt around <em>ESO</em>.<br />
<br />
My character of choice, an Orc Dragonknight, loaded into the game on the other side of a polygon-rich bridge from an equally polygon-rich town. The <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bethesda/">Bethesda</a> employee standing nearby mentioned I could go into the town for some guided content the team had prepared. I made a sharp right turn into the stream and killed a deer instead.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/e3-2013-stealing-cabbages-in-the-elder-scrolls-online/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E3 2013: Stealing cabbages in The Elder Scrolls Online</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/e3-2013-stealing-cabbages-in-the-elder-scrolls-online/">E3 2013: Stealing cabbages in The Elder Scrolls Online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 15:00:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/sega">SEGA</a> has released a high-def trailer for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/phantasy-star-online-2"><em>Phantasy Star Online 2's</em></a> Episode 2 update. The clip introduces the Duman race, a new planet, and new weapons, too.<br />
<br />
The trailer runs for a solid four minutes, buy you'll need to bring your mad Japanese language skills if you want to understand the voiceovers and the UI. There's plenty of combat footage on display as well as glimpses of the game's character creation and various environments. Check it out after the cut.<p><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/phantasy-star-online-2-episode-2-trailer-shows-new-race-planet/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Phantasy Star Online 2 Episode 2 trailer shows new race, planet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Massively" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/phantasy-star-online-2-episode-2-trailer-shows-new-race-planet/">Phantasy Star Online 2 Episode 2 trailer shows new race, planet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com">Massively</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ubisoft/">Ubisoft</a>'s claim that its new MMO shooter <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/e3-2013-ubisoft-announces-mmo-shooter-the-division/">The Division</a></em> will have a "<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/e3-2013-ubisoft-announces-mmo-shooter-the-division/">persistent world</a>" piqued Massively's collective interest. At <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2013/">E3</a>, we chatted briefly with Game Director Ryan Bernard, who has previously worked on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/everquest/"><em>EverQuest</em></a>, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest-ii/"><em>EverQuest 2</em></a>, and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/warhammer-online/"><em>Warhammer Online</em></a>. I asked what about the game and its persistent nature would appeal to MMO players and was told that actually, the team doesn't plan to make it "too persistent" at all. Each player will have his own little chunk of the world. Everything in that part of the world is persistent for him, and his friends can come over and help him out, kind of like <em>Animal Crossing</em> without the talking tanuki. The developers believe this will allow for a strong single-player experience while still having a visible impact on the player's slice of the world. There <em>are </em>places in the world that are persistent for everyone: the PvP areas. You won't want to travel around them without friends, but unfortunately, Bernard couldn't reveal more.<br />
<br />
The game is being released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but Ubisoft hasn't ruled out other platforms or cross-platform play just yet.<br />
