Uncharted Water Online bribes greenhorn sailors with gifts

Well, they may get their wish if for no other reason than I'd never heard of this game till now.

I'm always up for the occasional buckling of a swash.

I'm sorry but your claim that "developer, tech enthusiast..." would get sick of Apple holds no water. None. And, you know it.

Oh and to whoever it was that claimed Apple is just using the same commodity parts... You're dreaming.

Week in Review: Gamescom, I think I love you

Aug 21st 2011 11:58PM (Massively)
You know, what boggles me is that it seems every year we have news of some new property that's going to blow our minds. It may not actually blow our minds. It may only blow back our hair. It may blow our minds but only for a little while.

Even though, there's always some game that's going to consume our collective attention. Once GW2, SW:TOR, and Secret World are out what's next?

Those three games, I think, have some of the most interesting mechanics, setting, story, IP we've seen in a while. Anyone that comes after them offering anything less than dynamic content, deep story, deep character customization, super immersive setting, innovative mechanics will just be laughed at. Predictions for "how long till F2P" will be immediate.

The next contender will have to step up with nothing short of amazing.

And, yes, I think I can make that claim based on just what we've seen out of Gamescom and what we'll see from PAX.

The Anvil of Crom: Six reasons why

I'm sorry, Jef. I keep trying. I played AoC way back in the open beta leading to launch. I played post launch. I hung in there as long as I could. I've re-upped a subscription at least once a year since then. I even picked up Godslayer.

The reason I don't play AoC? The other players. There's never been a time that I've logged in and wasn't greeted by some of the most hate-filled profanity laden nonsense in my chat box.

AoC may have matured but its community hasn't.

Secret World cinematic makes world less secret

I'm certainly interested enough to want in on a beta at the least. What little I've seen of the games mechanics intrigues me and the setting is certainly new in an mmo.

That said, considering the amount of destruction visible in that teaser, how secret is this world going to remain?

Pretty sure I'd be in on the secret pretty quick if I saw a nightmare monster tossing subway cars around downtown.

Who cares if a game has pvp balance? Balance in mmo pvp is one of the dumbest things.

I'm a wizard who can call down demons and hellfire to melt my enemies. You're a plucky young warrior with a broadsword. Of course its fscking imbalanced!

Or... I'm a drooling idiot who keyboard turns and you memorized sun tzu, have the latest and greatest gaming mouse and macro keyboard. Again, it's going to be imbalanced.

You want balance in your pvp, play with your xbox.

Hadn't noticed Dragon Nest before today so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Enjoying it quite a bit.

Oh, and it is rather pretty.

Guild Wars 2 developer talks combat attributes and iteration

I'm interested in seeing how this all plays out come release. I've always enjoyed the theorycrafting side of MMOs but there are times when I'd like to just look at a stat and say, "yep, that will absolutely be a better item" rather than breaking out the slide rule to determine if a +wisdom of 4 was better or worse than just a straight +10 to spell power.

Ultimately I'll agree with some of the other comments that I don't want to see things devolve into "do you have 540 of stat x? No? Then you can't tank for us". In WoW (BC and Wrath) hitting this or that magic number had become my only goal so that I'd be uncrittable and thus allowed to tank.

Things like having fun became secondary to hitting those magic stats.

Hyperspace Beacon: Rule of one

The more I hear about SW:TOR the less interested I become. I'm sure I'll still play it but only eventually. I don't think it will be a day one for me and that will be strange as I've been day one on just about every mmo since WoW.

And, here's something favorable about WoW, there were communal choke-points. Players of every level had to go to these various places to get things done be it banking, crafting grouping, whatever. For along time it was Ironforge (lagforge if you will) then Shattrath, Dalaran and wherever people go for Cataclysm.

You didn't have to be there but there were times when I just wanted to be there. It was the place to see and be seen. I still remember years later the first time I saw a Paladin on his epic mount. He just looked cool as hell and I knew nothing except I was a long way from having that glowy horse.

The biggest disappointment for me in Warhammer was the utter lack of a communal choke-point like that. The way the world was bracketed, the way that going down to lower levels was actively discouraged completely removed opportunities like the one I had bumping into that paladin. I still think that was one of the bigger reasons WAR has done so poorly.

If TOR is going the same route of segregation of the populace that WAR did then it may just end up as a game I play to max level on one toon then unsubscribe from.
