iPhone 2.2.1 SDK on a PPC Mac

Apr 2nd 2009 12:34PM (TUAW.com)
Complete iPhone development on PPC is possible, including deploying to actual devices. The missing factor in some instructions is that codesign also needs patching, else you wind up being unable to sign the application, a required step to actually permit the device to load it. Once that's done, everything's fine.

Second Life on an iPhone

Absolutely! If the PSP could run a lightweight graphical SL client, I'd certainly take advantage of it.

And I noticed one Bay Area (NTT Labs, IIRC) job last summer mentioning "port the Second Life client to a prototype 4G wireless handset environment" as one of the position's goals..

Whatever happened to the name change option?

Personally, I wouldn't be interested, even if the fee were more reasonable ($50/year makes Network Solutions look good, and that's quite an accomplishment). As things stand, I've quite taken to my name substitution. ^_^

That said, if it had been an option when I signed up, or soon after, perhaps I'd have taken advantage of it - by the same token, I could easily envisage that being a noticeably popular avenue, were it to be offered.

Still, with all the fun seemingly involved in keeping the asset servers from eating their own tails, I wouldn't be surprised if the db wizards are cautioning against the notion for now.

Encoding video can be scary, but it doesn't have to be

On the OS X front, depending on what format the original footage is in, iMovie may well be suitable, with iDVD at hand for mastering a DVD copy as well. A more in-depth approach can be found with ffmpegX, which bundles various codecs and assorted utilities in a usable UI. Or, for the really hardcore nerd, mencoder offers all the options you could dream of, providing you have the time to dig through the documentation.

There are various other apps that may suit the need as well, for free, such as iSquint, originally aimed at producing iPod-compatible video. The same's probably true for Windows - QuickTime's a framework, after all, available for any programmer to use. The stock QuickTime Player application doesn't offer exporting without the "Pro" license, but all the calls are there for any other app to do the same.

Foaming rant includes SL

If we don't know or appreciate who he is, why is he being reported upon?

(Myself, I'd sooner hear if Al Gore's been in SL)

Followup: Two bad break-ups

Kudos to Cheen Pitney, both for such a mellow attitude to this regrettable incident, and for the concept behind the complete sculpture. Hopefully the finished work will be preserved in a good quality flyaround, for later appreciation.
