As for Cataclysm, I have one word; novelty. That's all it is. After 5 years of gathering bear spleens, anything different will be exciting. But once you level that new character from 1-85 and go through all those shiny new experiences, you're left with the same game it always was - the repetitive, stagnant endgame grind, whether it be gearing or crafting or achievements, its still carrot-on-a-stick. I just couldn't bring myself to do it again.

BioWare: WoW is the "touchstone" for The Old Republic
Feb 10th 2011 11:32AM (Massively)Basically this. WoW just established a list of things that you expect to be in an MMO, basically just because they found great success with that particular combination of basics. Think of things like talent trees, action bars, inventory bags, trade skills, etc. etc. etc. WoW didn't invent those things, but it mainstreamed them (which is a bit unfortunate if the one thing you want to see in the industry are truly different experiences).
Including these things in your game doesn't automatically make your game a WoW copy. There are plenty of ways to innovate within those systems themselves to distinguish one from the other.
But the point he was trying to make was that not including one or more of these things is a pretty dumb idea, because it ultimately makes players feel like they're getting short-changed or that the company got cheap on the development. How many successful MMOs don't have talent trees or a crafting system?
