Well, LOTR, of course, because it is the grand-daddy of contemporary fantasy (including D&D).

The Virtual Whirl: Is one hour enough to be considered an active user?

I agree with Harper Beresford that dollars spent is a more useful metric for the long-term health and stability of Second Life.

Hours spent in-world may be what creates a sense of community, and involvement with that community may be what leads people to spend money, but it really isn't going to keep SL going unless it *is* resulting in money flowing into the coffers of Linden Lab.

Second Life's killer app? How about Linden Lab's killer app?

I think you're right on the money here. There's a confluence of things that keep each of us in SL, and unless whole communities decide to go try some other platform, I doubt that anything else will seriously draw away committed SL residents.

Second Life to lose group voting feature

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I was (am) in a group that had been using it, and then suddenly (on an important vote) it was no longer working.

Miss Poindexter, how do you know no one voted? The bug in the group voting feature is that when the voting closes, all information related to it disappears. No results of any kind are produced.

Tateru, I love your reporting, and you're usually right on target, but this is totally unrelated to reality. Second Life "lost" the group voting feature long ago. The group voting feature has not worked since at least June 2007. The jira entry is here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1146 and Soft said on January 19 2009 that "Group voting won't exist anymore as of ~1.23 viewers."

Of *course* metrics show the feature is virtually unused--because it doesn't work! For Soft to say that is why they are discontinuing it is disingenuous, to say the least. And I'd like to know who your sources are for "those who have relied on the feature to-date."

And as for scripted objects or third-party solutions? Nope, been there, tried that. The group voting feature, as it appears to have been intended, would allow a group owner to specify which group role(s) can vote. Scripted objects can tell if you are a member of a group, but not what role(s) you are in. Group voting (with the associated role restrictions) would be a significant improvement over other methods.

FYI, it seems to work fine for me using Firefox on an Intel Mac. Lots of pretty pictures! ;-)
