The Daily Grind: How early should guild creation be allowed?

Jan 13th 2012 8:22AM (Massively)
I've seen this in one or two games, but I can't remember which ones, nor many details about it, but it's something I really liked.

They had two organizations you could be a member of simultaneously. One was basically a guild, but it was a limited structure group that was little more than a chat channel and a tag on your character. It was more for social interaction with friends, and had no serious impact on anything in the game.

Then there was a heavily structured organization that tied in to the games political/pvp/raid system. This is what gave you oranizational perks in the game, your actions contributed to an experience or influence system for this organization, etc.

I always like that system, because it allowed you to stay with a group of friends while simultaneously enjoying what content you wanted in the end game. In a setup like this, the basic 'guild' would be createable immediately, whereas the other organization would have certain faction/level requirements to create.

EVE Online monument commemorates the summer riots

This is a great gesture to the community, and it's really symbolic of how the game is defined by the players, on so many different levels.

The changes in Crucible are much needed and very welcome, and I hope CCP continues this trend. I think how they handle the DUST514 launch will be really telling of their sincerity and priorities, but for now, color me impressed.

@DarkWalker

You just outed yourself as having either a) only played EVE for a ridiculously short amount of time, or b) never actually played, and just read enough on Massively to sound competent.

With the exception of a few 'pimp ships' people keep around, losing a ship is not a big deal...far from it. Anyone who has played EVE more than a month or two has come to realize that your items in EVE are consumables. When you buy a missile launcher, you don't go to some nullsec plex and hit some boss over and over and finally get awarded your launcher, you go to the market and buy a dozen of them, just like they were a healing potion in a fantasy MMO. The game is not designed like other MMOs in that your time invested is your equipment on your character.

I live in hisec, so I'm not a rediculously wealthy player with billions of ISK. But my corp regularly runs small gang roams into nullsec, and usually I take either a 45 mil battlecruiser (fitted) or 120 mil T2 cruiser and only expect about a 60-75% chance of bringing it back in one piece.

If I lose it, no big deal, I have a couple dozen fully-fitted ships in reserve, and I'll make it back up through a combination of lowsec exploration, L4 missions, and PI within a day or two.

Anyone who says "OMG you lose everything when you die in EVE!" really has no clue what they are talking about.

CCP partners with Nexon to release EVE Online in Japan [Updated]

@Devylman

For all their faults, even CCP can figure out playerbase demographics and language, either by checking OS language or through surveys. This is why they have Russian and German language clients. It takes a lot of continued money, time, and effort to produce localized clients for games, and they have apparently determined either that the Spanish-speaking population is not large enough, or their localization team it too busy to make a Spanish client at this time.

Even if that means lost subscribers, it's still very possible that they would lose more money making a Spanish client.

The Daily Grind: Do you like the idea of monetizing third-party utilities?

Jun 16th 2011 10:30AM (Massively)
@Dril

Mynsc already beat me to what I was going to say about the licensing. I would definitely contend you assessment that it is nothing but a cash grab....I wouldn't rule out the possibility, but I don't think money is the primary concern there.

I don't know what the current fansite agreement is, but they do seem to have changed the bit where you have to pay the license fee for advertising, which I am not a fan of, but in all the revised legal bullshit I could see as being something of a necessary evil.

However, I think the net impact of this will be small. What you do have to consider is, for a low-traffic site, hosting is extremely cheap, so they could get away without advertising and minimal costs involved. For bigger sites like Battleclinic or Dotlan, they see tons of trraffic, so recouping $99 in advertising would be pretty simple (Yes, I know dotlan is donation/plex supported currently).

What I really don't like though is them requiring the fee for services based on ISK. I'm guessing there is some sort of bullshit legal reasoning there too, but I really think they could have found a way around it.

Also, I want to paint my ship and would gladly pay real cash to do so. So serving the playerbase, or a cash grab, your pick. I would say *both*. And I am 100% okay with it being half a cash grab...they're a business and every single healthy business in the world is supposed to find new ways to make money, and finding ways to do that without altering the gameplay is a complete win-win in my book.

And finally...'most expensive' MMO? Well, I guess that's true, it's the most expensive, along with every other major MMO that also charges $14.95/month. You should try out for politics, you have a gift for contorting facts into meaning something completely different. That was a totally bunk statement and you are stupid for including it in your argument.

Five by five: PlanetSide Next reveals the Reaver

@Robert 089

Well, when it looks almost exactly like the old Mosquito, and very little like the old Reaver, so we kind of assume the horses' mouth is misspoke. It is Smed, after all, and has been known to be wrong. So based on the appearance of the aircraft, it would only be logical to assume he was wrong again.

His follow-up quote makes him look like far less of an idiot than we are accustomed to, and reaffirms that it is actually the Reaver, so thanks for pointing that out.

@DevilSei

Hi Devil, you apparently did not play PS in it's prime. I distinctly remember many multiple hour stalemates that poplocked a continent fighting over a single base. There were easily 200 players on each side, at the same base, for a nice total of 400 in a single fight. I can't verify exact numbers, but I can say without any doubt it exceeded 256 on several occasions.

Now please kindly go back under your bridge.

This. Definitely the Mosquito.

Reaver had much longer wings with rocket pods, the rockets being the key thing, as they kill tanks. Mosquitos were primarily air superiority, or mowing down the occasional trooper or even light vehicle.

Also the engines raised behind the cockpit are a Mosquito trait, Reaver's were more inline with the body.

Sadly, Rock, Paper, Shotgun also claims this is the Reaver, so it looks like Smed/Sony PR screwed up. Which is a little troubling. Either that, or they are drastically reworking the aircraft, much more so than the Galaxy and Vanguard we have seen so far.

In any case, NEW PLANETSIDE, HELL YES! Bring back the 200v200 battles plz thx la~

The Daily Grind: Should trailers use only in-game footage?

Nov 21st 2010 2:14PM (Massively)
I'm with you here. I don't think they used any foreign graphics, models, etc. I think it was all done in-engine with the new character model, and full liberty taken with scripting flight paths and camera control (and in the first scene I think they applied some sort of filter).

A big point is to notice how nothing is anti-aliased (watch it in 1080p). If they were really trying to pretty it up, they would have at least done that.
