Lindens keep telling me the viewer gets out of beta in 1 quarter.

Linden Lab investigates new/updated technologies for Second Life

Feb 18th 2010 5:40PM (Massively)
Regarding the language of choice, LSL vs C#, I got quite the opposite feedback from the Lindens office hours. They seem to be holding back on LSL if C# Can do the same thing, with the exception of fixes and adding things that the whole community can use to improve performance/stability (llSetLinkPrimitiveParamsFast). You need to take a look at Babbage Linden's logs regarding C#.

Feb 10, 2010 Babbage Linden said:
we will be fixing the LSL where it makes sense
but not where it overlaps with C#
which is the best use of our time
for example, efficient scripts is needed by LSL and C#
and llSetLinkedPrimitiveParamsFast is more generally useful than working llSHA1String functinos anyway
so, it's the right call to do llSetLinkedPrimitiveParamsFast then do C#

The Virtual Whirl: Questions from the virtual mailbag

As I recall, there are locks in place if the market value of L$ jumps high or low very quickly. There were problems in the past where L$ sold for very, very cheap in 2006 and no one wanted to pay much for them. I think you could get about 550 L$ for 1 US$ at the time and the economy tanked. There are also times when the lab will infuse the market with it's own L$ to help stablize the market.

Other than "Cleanup Week", what other major holidays and events are observed that are only related to the culture of Second Life. I know there is The SL Birthday, the Concierge party, and the Burning Life events specifically acknowleged by the Linden staff. Does anyone observe other events?

Second Life official forums to be replaced Tuesday

Feb 9th 2010 6:11PM (Massively)
From what I recall, the Lindens supported blogging as an alternative to closing the forums in the past. As a seasoned Second Life resident, I am still a bit confused about the forums. In my mind, they were still "closed" and not the preferred method of communication. It seems that M Linden has started using them to "continue the discussion" of his blog posts, followed by other Lindens doing the same. However, they don't always do this. Some blog posts close of comments as well as forum discussions. Many of us would still like to speak about the posts and get everyone elses opinions. The closest thing to doing this is by maintaining our own blogs. I hope that upgrading the blogs to use JIVE/Clearspace will introduce more posts that don't lock the residents of second life from speaking about their opinions and what is on their mind.

Long, long ago, the only way you could really get news form SL was through the forums, or on the staff's own personal blogs. The forums however were also plagued by a lot of hostility and mistreatment.

Registrations open for SL Pro! conference, February

I would have to agree that the overlap is a big problem. Most people who are into scripting are also pretty big into building as well.

That's not the Second Life economy!

I remember there was a big problem in the past where the Lindens tracked it down to a guy sending L$ between two of his accounts repeatedly with testing some scripts. I was a bit taken aback when I saw the new statistics as was immediately reminded of this. Most other games allow us to have multiple characters under one account. Those figures may have been more accurate if that option was available.

Second Life search upgrades in late January

@Eris: Yes, GSA looks at objects marked for search on parcels that are also listed in search. It would be nice if parcels could have something similar to covenants for descriptions where you could drop in a note card.

Second Life, the New Year, and real names

Jan 5th 2010 5:54PM (Massively)
I believe the "Real Name" will appear on the profile, with an option to show it above your avatar name (just like we do now with group titles). You may even have to verify your real name, just as you do with verifying age.

Linden Lab punctures education community with newly registered trademark

Once the trademark problem started to come out, I started to blog more often about content not related to thier platform.
