Clone Wars Adventures open beta begins

Aug 23rd 2010 9:39AM (Massively)
My 6 year old is a rabid fan of the Clone Wars cartoons. I installed the game and set him up, called him in to show it to him. He squealed with delight - literally. So I gave him a pat on the head and left the room to go hang out with my wife. Fifteen minutes later I hear his plaintive cry. "Daaaaaaad! This game sucks! Can I play Free Realms?"

He felt like there was nothing to explore. I did get him into the tower defense game, which he actually liked, but still the rest of the weekend he preferred to play Free Realms. And this is a kid who almost never stops saying "Anakin this" or "Captain Rex" that and who has daily lightsaber battles with his little sister (who looks so freakin' cute in her Yoda costume).

Avast ye landlubbers: Uncharted Waters Online ahead!

Jul 19th 2010 11:02AM (Massively)
How is that game, these days? I played around on the limited free version a few years ago. Seemed fun, but i was playing something else as my main game and wasn't willing to shell out for the premium content, so I burned through the limited free stuff pretty quick. I'm curious if they've kept it updated or anything, since I never hear anything about it.

As for Uncharted Waters, I'm curious and might be willing to try. Goodness knows Pirates of the Burning Sea was a big disappointment for me. I tried Voyage Century too but it just didn't click with me either.

No Martial Empires for North America or Asia [Updated]

Jul 7th 2010 10:54AM (Massively)
Apparently we killed the Seven Souls website already.

I guess there's not much point in even playing the beta again. Only had one session, and it seemed pretty fun. Was willing to try it out some more but sounds like it's a moot point now. I've yet to find a single martial arts themed MMO that's actually any good. That's a shame, because I'd really like to get into a game with an asian fantasy setting rather than the typical western fantasy setting, and nice action-filled martial arts combat.

The Daily Grind: What's your briefest MMO dalliance?

Vanguard - About 15 minutes. This was only a few months ago, so it wasn't the bad launch. It was the slow combat and terrible animations, and the fact that it did not look good enough to justify the poor frame rate I was getting.

Pirates of the Burning Sea - About an hour? Horribly disappointed.

Mortal Online - 2 hours, but it ran so poorly and crashed so much it just wasn't worth it. I'd give it another shake if I could be convinced it would run well, or at least stably.

APB - about an hour and a half maybe. And most of that was designing my character. It ran poorly, and the car controls were just inexcusably bad.

STO - maybe 2 weeks in "open" beta. Was glad I was able to get my pre-order refunded before it shipped. Wasted potential, repetitive, and the exploration system was a joke. Ship combat was kinda fun at first, but repeated ad nauseum with nothing else to do but the poor ground combat, I just couldn't bring myself to spend money on it.

Lots of F2P games - anywhere from a couple of hours to a week of off and on play. I dunno why, I keep trying, thinking eventually I'll find one that clicks. Some of them I really WANT to like, but they just won't let me. And what's up with almost none of them letting you remap your controls? Between that and the weird or nonexistent WASD implementation they use, sometimes it's just a control issue.

I never seem to stick with any MMO for more than about 3 months anyway. City of Heroes is the lone exception, but even that has not been able to draw me back in the way it used to. Might give it another shot with Going Rogue, but I remain skeptical.

Some games I'm willing to give more time to, especially if I had some regular peeps to play with:

Chronicles of Spellborn, Fantasy Earth Zero, Wizard 101, Allods Online.

Games I WANT to like but get disappointed when I try to play them again Aika Online, Soul of the Ultimate Nation

The animations on the dual gunner are very fun. Also I really enjoy the art direction in this game.

I may have to give Earth Eternal another try. I played it once for maybe an hour and thought it was just horrendously slow, combat-wise. Pity, too, as I spent almost that long deciding on a character. Think I wound up with a cyclops if I remember correctly.

TCoS always intrigued me, but knowing it's going to get relaunched, and hearing how deserted it is, makes me wonder if it's worth the time.

Why You Should Be Playing PlanetSide: It's online war!

Jan 15th 2010 11:34AM (Massively)
I tried Planetside right after it came out. A couple of buddies of mine from work got it and were raving about it. They gave me a guest pass or something. So I tried it, and I wanted to get into the action and join them. They were on another continent or something. I asked them how to get there, they said take the shuttle. I go to the shuttle, it says I have to wait TEN MINUTES for the next one.

So I resign myself to not being able to join my buddies at that time, which really irked me. I try the instant action button, and after about 5 minutes of it doing absolutely nothing, I gave up and decided to play something that actually let me play the game instead of sitting around waiting for mass transit. I can do that in real life, thank you very much.

Love the idea and the concept, but the game didn't seem to want to let me play so I decided to oblige them and not play.
