Choose My Adventure: Dark Age of Camelot, week four

@gramaw Yeah I came back after a couple years and just ble wright by thid. Just got what gear I needed for skill caps and stuff as I was leveling so I never paid too much attention to the total set bonuses. That's pretty cool that they seem to bring you so close to full temps though. Gives newer players a very even chance in RvR. Nothing like being new with random items and getting 2-shot by that temped ranger :P

@gramaw Not sure how well the stats are distributed on the bp gear because i never looked closely enough but one thing it's time to learn about are bonus caps. Your stats can be capped by item bonuses and in thid (correct me if im wrong, its been a while) the cap is +31? While the resistances cap at +11? And skills are +4? Probably the most important thing besides gameplay in DAoC is understanding stats and all they entail. Say you don't have your battle songs specced to your level...you'll get resisted a lot more than someone fully specced. The level of the spell is also determinate of your chance to be resisted. Resistances are one of the most unsung heroes of stats though in DAoC. Show me a "templated" character at 50 with a hole in a couple resistances and I'll show you a player who fits into that deficit and laughs when that person dies instantly. "Hahaha wow that little lurikeen exploded! Guess he should've had more slash resist. That was a little nuts!" Meanwhile you show a player at 50 with fully templated resists (in addition to their other stats and skills), I'll show you one tough opponent. Newer age mmo's tried the resistance game some then just sort of did away with them because they didn't like it. It's still there and strong in DAoC. I warn you of stats because newer players have a tendency to stack str and con like crazy and not realize that it caps out at a certain number. We don't want you pushing away resistance gear because you found some more str/con on something else even though it wouldn't benefit you in the slightest. If you have any questions, ask in game too. People are extremely helpful in DAoC!

@Dogorox Not to mention that the forums for this game aren't managed by Mythic or Bioware or anyone related to the game for that matter, but in fact they're located at vnboards.ign dot com. In this game though, it's easier to log in and ask for help than to sift through old forums hoping for a tiny glimmer of something new to you. If you have a question, ask it in your main city or portal hub where there's lots of players: you most likely will get an answer. The population distribution in this game is made up of so many veterans who've studied what they need to and even followed through the testing of myths to find out the truth about game mechanics (yes, break points in casting speeds. for templates, have these in mind in your character creation. as it stands mine is one point away with max item bonuses [trying to avoid wasting a realm point on aug dex]). As for help this week, refer to my post last week since it contained some pvp information and got upvoted like crazy (is it too late to say "first"?). Your cc and ranged dd is a huge factor in what makes you fearsome at your level in pvp

Uhhh yeah if you think Shaco is the most annoying then you've never fought a Kassadin. Shaco is annoying but not nearly as deadly anymore.

@c0gnit0 Based on the voting patterns, I'd say for all the "REAL RvR" votes, place them into the battlegrounds votes. Its about the same it's just that the implementation is a lot different.

@c0gnit0 To reinforce a very specific spot in that long message, you CANNOT DO RVR YET. Please don't waste votes on the RvR guys. He's not 50 ;)

This game isn't user friendly, newbie friendly, or friendly in general to players in most cases. The thing you should know about pvp in DAoC is that CC controls fights. Your mez will be useless if someone hits the target after you mez it, including yourself. The only CC not breakable is a stun which not many classes have (but all hib casters have baseline. ALL. beware.). I can see problems where you may be mezzing and then doing your two DD's. That'd break their mez and they're free to cast on you. At lower levels, most melee classes can't win a fight against casters. The caster toolset is a lot bigger at lower levels than most melee. Your best chance in melee comes with a group that can slow or stun OR you level a weapon spec that gives you a slow style. That will help tremendously seeing as how if you interrupt a caster as a skald, the only proble you have to worry about is their quickcast. Once that's blown, stagger your DD's for interrupting their casting. The PvP in that game is unique in that it truly is old school. Despite what the vote may turn out to be this week, you cannot do real RvR yet. I advise being 50 for that with some gear, otherwise stick with battlegrounds. I know all the Ywain servers are clustered but I'm not sure whether or not battlegrounds are. On Ywain9 I can expect to run into enemies in the lion's den every play session. Your best bet for enemy fights is roaming around the edges, towards all the camps of the monsters as all realms share the same kill quests. There may be more than one camp of the monsters on the map, but the quest is the same. Go to the tomtes and keep going towards the Hib keep at their fire giants and you may run into some hibs at their giants. Some people say its dishonorable (and at higher levels it does give less RP), but the fact is that Mythic put the quests in battlegrounds for just this reason: PvP. Safety isn't a sure thing and it breeds experience in battle. Hope some of the info helped you, happy hunting!

@Softserve You sir have inspired my academic side. Your mentioning of the average gamer not wanting to seek out a skilled player to assist them but rather do it themselves begs me to ask a few questions.

Is it the human trait we all have called ego that make us want to avoid other players and just do it ourselves?

Is it some social fear or something of the like? Some deficiency or inexplicable desire to avoid others?

Is it a lack of willing to invest the same time as it would take in the real world to achieve something? Example being crafting a badass sword: it could takes days or even weeks in real life and hours upon hours of hard laborious work. Whereas in video games when you want the crafted sword of badassery, you either farm the currency to buy it or the materials in a time significantly less. Sometimes people go to other players out necessity but for the most part, don't most people reach for everything themselves?

I genuinely think I'm going to research and write a paper on this subject. Not sure which questions I'll focus on or if I should refine anything but any input would be appreciated. I'm just hoping someone else understands where I'm going with this since I'm awful with articulation and it's a rough idea.

@Kalex716 I agree but only because of the era of mmo gaming we're in now. You said yourself that you enjoyed the quest based progression because it was new, but now you want camp based progression. Once you get tired of grinding monsters that keep respawning (for some unknown and immersion breaking reason unless you're very creative in your RP'ing), you'll want quests. I hate to beat a dead horse but this is why GW2 is going to be so interesting for me. Their take on questing isn't that it's exclamation points over heads and delivery quests nonstop, but instead just exploring the world and encountering unique events at every turn. It's like an actual adventure as opposed to a chain of NPC's directing your adventure for you. It seems like the most unique form of progression I've heard of in a while and I'm most excited to see how it will play out when the game releases. As for personal preference now, I'd happily welcome camp progression but after a while, wouldn't you like to have a quest? ;)
