Lots of weirdness on the preorder thing;
* You must set up a new account to preorder
* Combat Pet varies depending on where you order from
* Addon pack #3 includes #2 but neither include #1 so you have to purchase that in addition
* Name reservation is only activated after payment but preorder payment doesnt go through till 1 week before launch (without additional purchases)
...
It has been announced the lifetime sub pack will be available after launch which is good. Though anyone buying the mid pack then upgrading will be screwed, I guess.

Everquest. I wasn't in at launch but prob late 2000 or 2001. My old D&D friends turned me on to it. Then DAoC and on & on &on...

Yeah same here. Pre-F2P i was very stingy with what games i'd play. Taking advantage of any free trials I could get. Now i'm open to play/tryout just about any game out there.
I've always found that a long term sub (multimonth) = burnout/lost interest in any game for me. Like I suddenly feel I "have" to play it because i payed 3 months in advance.
I really like the idea of Sony's Station Pass, all their games for $20 is a pretty sweet deal.

Maybe check The Secret World?

Giant Monsters aka DaiKaiju aka Godzilla type themed MMO. Could combine RTS w/ MMO. Some players build cities/armies and other players make Giant monsters to destroy them. Open world PVP against military units & giant monster fights!

I "raided" once back in EQ (2000/2001 maybe). Haven't had any interest in it since.

I found this via the forums last night but wrongly thought it was something old. Spent a while trying to find something but aside of the already mentioned single letter/rune that's wrong (looks like a stealth bomber?) I couldn't find anything.
