RuneScape increasing subscription prices on February 1st

Jan 25th 2012 2:41AM (Massively)
I've played Runescape off and on for a year or so. It has some shortcomings as well as some successes. It comes down to the fact that it's just not up to par as far as a game that's worthy of a subscription fee. I just can't see paying $8 a month for it. The graphics are outdated and it can be a bit tedious to play at times. The only real benefit to Runescape is that it's browser based, and can easily be played on multiple computers without the need to install a bulky program.

The only thing they are going to succeed at doing is ensuring that if players do let their subscriptions lapse, they will be hesitant (or flat out unwilling) to return to Runescape when they realize that their rate has jumped an extra $2.

Good luck Rune, I'm afraid you're going to need it.

Brad McQuaid reminisces about the birth of EverQuest

@Miffy EQ didn't fail. EQ got old and never MMOs became more popular. To declare it a failure is short-sighted, at best.

@Zantom I get your point, and I don't totally disagree with what you are saying. A lot of EQ could be frustrating and sometimes dull. However I much prefer MMOs that are tuned to be more difficult than what is produced today. I understand why MMO developers make games easymode, they have to walk a fine line in order to get as many subscribers as possible. I just wish that 1 AAA developer would think outside the box a bit and make a game where effort actually equals reward, and those gamers that are smarter/more dedicated are actually far ahead of the curve. Instead now all we get are endless genocide simulators where we all get the same easy epic gear simply for throwing ourselves into the same raids that only require us to hit max level, or to toss ourselves into the same mind-numbing PvP buttlegrounds ad nauseum.

But then again, I'm the clear minority of the MMO community.

EverQuest to hackers: You've been served

@scfs123 Pretty sure that anyone who has joined a normal group for a drop and couldn't obtain it because it was camped by a box would disagree with you. You may as well be hacking the game. The only difference is that you're paying more to SOE to do so.

The only way you wouldn't see it as cheating is if you are doing it yourself, or you're just ignorant.

and yeah, to be honest, it is cheating. You're basically able to do what entire group (and even in some cases entire guilds) can do by yourself. It's complete against how MMOs are meant to be played.

@Weiji It does ruin the server economy. You do understand this, right?

I wonder if this "warning" includes multi-boxing? This is what ruined EQ for me personally. I even went back last year when they unveiled the Fippy Darkpaw time-locked server. It was rampant with multi-boxers within 2 weeks.

I imagine that this won't include them, because frankly Sony could care less about server competitive balance. They never have, and they never will. It's all about subscriptions to them.
