I think the only thing of note here is that the picture corresponds to a sort of visual representation of Funcom's MMO release history, with the techy side of the picture being Anarchy Online, the big ancient runic door being Age of Conan, and the weird tentacle things being Secret World.
It may seem obvious that developers would play their own game, but I would suggest the complete opposite. I would be surprised if anyone who was deeply involved in the development seriously played the game.
It's kind of hard to really enjoy something that you've identified as "work" for the last five years. Where you see every flaw and bug, and where you know of a bunch of cool features that never made it into the game due to time constraints. Where you know all the plot twists, all the cutscenes, storylines, and intimately familiar with the game mechanics.
This sounds like another bout of Bioware PR exaggerations.
I still think the high point of Evony's ads was when they stole pictures of some person in Second Life, added a flash blinking light animation to the breasts, and used that.
That's a pretty common fallacy. Taking a general response to something, calling it "People" and implying that most if not everyone holds this opinion.
I sure as hell didn't want to play as Batman or Superman in DCUO, nor do I want to play as Wolverine, Deadpool, or the Thing in MUO.
I think a lot of the people who want to play as Batman and Deadpool don't really want this either. They want to play as the character, but be the only one playing as it, so they can be special. It's hard to feel special when you're in a team full of Wolverines.
There's not many details on this game at the moment, but if this is really the route they're going, I think it'll be the first superhero MMO I ignore.
@Chiren I'd sorta disagree, one of the reasons I started following Massively was, with all these F2P MMOs, I could get news of interesting updates to games I play all in one place. I'm always looking forward to Champions Online's new costume releases to see if there's any useful pieces in there.
As much as I like the characters, this whole idea of having a MMO where you can only choose between a roster of known IP characters is annoying. While all the clones running around Champions Online suggests that some people actually like the idea of playing known characters, I'd so much rather make my own.
I usually look forward to every comic themed MMO, but this sounds so incredibly meh already.
I guess I'll have to wait and see for more details.
I don't know why this would even be an issue for AoC.
AoC, like most of MMOs, survive off a niche community. SWTOR is wildly overhyped, and I'd be willing to bet that there'll be a disappointed mass-exodus of players 2-3 months after the game's release, when the hype bubble bursts and they realize it's just the same thing as all the rest.
That's not to say that SWTOR will be a failure, only that it'll sink into the same kind of niche MMO that all the rest seem to.
