@odericko To be honest, when it comes to FFXIV, everyone but the players and what few people follow the news are pretty ignorant about the game. It's not just on massively; it's pretty much everywhere.
Can't blame em tho, it's not like SE is actively promoting it. Can't expect people who were disappointed on release to keep following the game a year later.
I'm with you on that one. I don't like to talk on voice chats for several reasons, in fact:
- I'm rarely, if ever, alone on the room while I play. - I'm very shy and get really nervous when trying to use it, even to say simple stuff like "hi". - I'm not 100% confident on my english skills. - Guild chat usually becomes a barren land as everyone is talking on vc. And ff you can't / want to use voice chat, you're probably gonna have trouble with getting friends on the guild and, in turn, you might have trouble getting groups to raids or similar stuff.
Stll, I'm always online on vent (just to listen) and am glad that my guild does not require talking, just listening to vent during raids. Even so, I'd rather have us all use text chat. It's not that hard to type stuff like "I got aggro" or "attack the mage" or other simple sentences like that. It's not like we need to write an entire essay to be "efficient" enough on most MMO raids.
....Not to mention there's ALWAYS that one guy listening to some crappy music on the background while he speaks, that alone is a deal breaker.
The comments here just prove what I've been saying for some time already:
The biggest challenge SE has to overcome is not fixing the game (they're already done a good job on that front), but convincing everyone they did change it.
One thing that I found to be quite interesting is the amount of whining over Sargatanas's server name. Sure, Sargatanas wasn't that famous of a weapon from Final Fantasy IX, but the ****storm on the forum over something that simple was amusing, to say the least.
"I'm willing to bet a lot of people didn't bother trying the game while it was free, because we've always known subscriptions were coming."
This is completely true and surely one of the reasons for the low interest over this period, but it's not the only one.
After the failed launch and the initial "we screwed up and will now try to fix the game" messages, they completely put marketing to a halt and are making no effort to bring new people to check the game. If it weren't for MMO news sites such as this one, most people wouldn't even know the game is still up.
Heck, they aren't even doing some simple stuff that could help bring interest (putting a FFXIV song in the new 3DS rhythm game could surely make a few people check out the game forums to see what's going on, for example) .
It's a bit hard to make people want to check out the game when the only news that are easily found are stuff like "We're now charging fees" or "We're merging servers". Heck one of the most common questions of newcomers are about the fatigue system, which has been removed months ago.
I really hope SE realizes they *need* to work on the game reputation way before 2.0 hits and not just one month before, because changing the gamers' conceptions about the game is what will ultimately save or doom it..
