BioWare devs talk SWTOR combat animations, answer PvP questions

As I said before, I don't know what build you are seeing but when I see combat in SWTOR, I see my characters parrying blaster shots, taking hits and getting knocked down. There are animations for CC, dots, your buffs... the list goes on. The combat from move to move is pretty seamless. The character movement is just as fluid as WoW's. Targeting is a tad bit more difficult than WoW's but it's nothing too bothersome.

I just don't agree with your assessment. You are entitled to your opinion. In the end, you don't have to play it... but I won't let someone who really doesn't have access to the game bad-mouth it uncontested. Especially when their opinions could sway people. What am I concerned of you might ask? Well, as you know, most people aren't exactly free thinkers and will normally follow the masses. MMO's rely on a good player population to work well and I will be damned if people try to sabotage it before the thing even launches. I have no problem with dissent or criticism. It's mainly Bioware's fault that we even have to have this discussion at all. They are being ridiculous with their non-disclosure agreement and being entirely too secretive. There aren't enough people who have access and are willing to participate in discussions like these.

I don't mean to single you out particularly Borick, you were the only one who seemed to be able to articulate his/her thoughts enough to potentially sway people. Others are obvious trolls. I don't consider you one of those people. If you are going to be vocal in your criticism, I would encourage you to go back and look at what you are using as the bar when assessing other games. While WoW is a great game, it is lacking in many ways when even compared to SWTOR. I hope to see you in SWTOR and the myriad of other MMO's coming out!

I will admit, in the video's they show they shouldn't choose keyboard turning, skill-clicking, non-strafers controlling their characters for their videos. In any game that makes the combat appear "jerky" and not very fluid. But, you said you have seen a beta so I really don't know what you could be complaining about... unless you are watching over the shoulder of a keyboard turning, skill-clicking, non-strafer. /shrug

If you are using WoW as your baseline for all other animations in MMO's to be judged by, SWTOR easily surpasses the mark set by WoW. I don't know what build you have seen of SWTOR, or really care. From my own, non-over-the-shoulder, first-hand experience across many different builds of beta... the animations are inspired and really draw you into the fight. I found WoW's animations to be too short and often lacking in regards to it's effects (hello most melee attacks in that game). I am not sure if I am dealing with a hardcore WoW super-fanboi here but, if you look at the WoW as the "bar" in the visual department, that bar is exceeding low.

This is not to say I don't have my gripes with SWTOR but I think it's wise to remember that SWTOR is a MMO. Which is to say, it will change and get better over time. In it's current beta stage, however, it's a solid game and does many things right. One of which is the fluid combat with associated animations.

"hey didn't even bother with swimming animations, and that tells me that they just weren't trying to build a fully-fleshed MMO."

Really? People are upset about not being able to swim? Lol, what game has done swimming any justice and hasn't been considered more of a nuisance than something that adds to the immersion? Even WoW decided to change how they deal with swimming.

Lol, the animations in WoW are barely noticeable. Are you in beta for TOR?? I am and let me tell you, combat is waaaaaaaaaaay more fun in SW:TOR than WoW. I played WoW since launch so it's not a lack of exposure in that regard. I am not trying to be a Bioware fanboi either. I have my reservations too about the game but to spew things that are just patently false is not cool. While I saw the vitriolic reaction most had to the other poster who drew a comparison to politics, I will dare to say, MMO's and politics are alike in the sense that, perception is reality. So, when people make statements that may possibly influence the sheep who read this site, I feel I have to say something.
