I say yes. If I played a game like Vanguard that was not really being updated I would rather that then is closing for good. It would have been good if they had done that sort of thing for SWG.
I imagine that a game like WOW could exsist in "maintenance" mode for many years after Blizzard has stoped working on it. PVP would likly keep it going for a long time after PVE'rs have stoped playing.
I think if a game has enough players to justify even one server why not keep the game online, especialy if those players are paying enough to keep the server open. It would be nice if the devs worked out roughly how much it would cost each player to keep the server running and only charged them whatever that price was. Eg $1 a month per player.
SO basicaly its seems stupid to just shut a game down when I am sure just keeping one server open somewhere and not developing a game is not very expensive, and worth the cost just for the customer loyalty.
Kinda reminds me of times when I go exploring in some dangerous wild wilderness in MMO's and put on a David Attenborough type voice and narate what I see to my pillow. Watching an asortment of Bores in thei natural pixilated habitats is one of the most satisfying thing one can do. Watching the digital plats grow is another one of my favrite pastimes.
After many years of observing differnt species of Bore in MMO's I have concluded that they never leave the area they are born, just wonder aimlessly (often repeating the same pattern over and over) and their bodies have a tendency to just disapear after several moments after they die. They then reapear out of thin air after about a minute. I have yet to come up with a theory how they do this but will get back to you when I do.
@Oyjord I heard the job was left to an inturn and some stray cat they found out on the street. So don't be to hard on them, that cat has a bright future, so bright it needs to wear shades!
@(Unverified) Isn't it lucky GW2 can hide behind its "overflow" servers then? It can hide how many players really leave the game after the first few months as it will launch with far less servers then SWTOR so people will be playing on the overflow servers while they wait in queue so you wont even know if they close the over flow servers.
This is a good thing for the game as it gives trolls less to rage about or Massively less to write about as they love reporting on server merges. Or seem to:P
Just resubed to RIFT for a year after a few months break (and after trying several F2P MMOs, GW, And a buying a $79 paper weight that starts with Star and end in Republic) and single player land. My adventures just confirmed RIFT is among the best MMO's out there so it will be keeping my computer excersised and me nice and relaxed on the computer chair:P
Two things, an Ex girl friend and evolving from dial up to broadbang on a 2gig a month cap for $39.95 about 6 years ago! Oh and I always loved reading storeies about MMOs especialy when UO and EQ where big.
@(Unverified) Maybe they need to learn a thing or two from TRION. RIFT might not have cloaks as you raged about the other day but atleast they released a decent game that is still having content made for it.
I am a history buff and would have loved God and heroes to be good, but I don't think Heat Wave had near enough the resources ir human-power to make a decent MMO in a decent time frame, net alone a sub based one.
Probably RIFT, atleast I know the devs would keep adding to the stuff regualy, cause I would think it would get rather boring on an island real fast... Unless there were dinosaurs or canibals or something on it then it would be a rather intersting place to live.
But in all honesty I wish Creative Assembly would make a Total War MMO, I would be happy to be marooned on an island with a ROME/Medieval total war MMO.
