When I listed which I believed the best faction ship was for each of the major roles... yea... Minmatar comes out being on the list the most followed by Amarr, then Galente then Caldari last.
Frigs: Minmatar Destroyer: Minmatar Cruiser: Minmatar Battle Cruiser: Caldari (Drake nerf plz) Battleship: Amarr Assault: Galente Marauder: Amarr Black Ops: Caldari Covert Ops: Toss up between Caldari / Minmatar Interceptor: Toss up between Amarr / Minmatar Interdictors: Minmatar Heavy Assault: Toss up between Galente / Minmatar Recon: Amarr Command: Toss up between Amarr / Minmatar Strategic Cruisers: The only ships that are balanced with each other. The people who hate Blizzard and can't accept anything "good" could ever come from them will label it as "Desperate" due to their wanting Blizzard to fail.
I see this as a promotion to get players back in the game.
I would call it Desperate if they had gone down to around 4 million active subscriptions. But they are still over 10 million. This isn't Desperate, this is offering players a chance to come back and enjoy the game.
It's an incredible promotion. It addresses a lot of the reasons players don't want to come back and play.
So, in short. If you're a gamer who enjoys video games and MMO's specifically, and you look at Blizzard with a neutral outlook, you will see a pretty amazing promotion to get you back into the game and enjoying Azeroth again.
If you're simply filled with hatred because you want to see the most successful Development Studio crash and burn. Then you'll label it as Desperate.
Either way, it will bring players back. Quite a few of them, and Blizzard will be happy, those returning players will be happy, and their friends will be happy.
Eve Online is the pinnacle of free form space combat. To say anything differently is laughable. No other space fight game gives you the free will to do what eve online offers.
I am interested in the Sov mechanics and just how much of a sandbox they are putting out there for the players.
Sandbox MMO's where player decisions are not governed by the Game Creators / Game Masters is the direction we need to take. It's what is so appealing about eve online.
As someone who works in the Gaming Industry and someone who is currently furthering his career in Video Game Development, I never looked at game content creation through the eyes of those whom do not play MMO's the same as the majority of gamers.
There is an untapped genre of video games waiting to be made for those with special needs. A social MMO for those who need the outlet the most.
Once that realization set in, it's a bit more emotional. At least for me it is.
Perhaps it's not so much about working on that Triple A title so many Developers wish to be apart of, but the impact you have on the players you reach with your creation.
First hand experience has shown me that most upcoming Developers like myself strive to obtain that career with Blizzard, Bioware or NCSoft. The industry giants. They create games based on their own play styles and lose sight of playstyles not represented in college or in the Developers community.
I believe, this post has changed my goals somewhat.
That was a lot less flaming than I thought would happen so I am inclined to respond.
You are correct. It's silly of me to compare an expansion with a release.
World of Warcraft did start out much much smaller but it was during a time when there were few other MMO's to choose from and it was quite large upgrade to other MMO's of the time.
SWTOR has actually beaten wow at "launch" so I guess their statement holds some truth. It's still such a bold statement at this time in MMO's. It's not about how many you have at launch, it's about how many you retain.
I stand corrected with my previous comment.
The reason Cata was so successful is due to the already established game. We will have to see how swtor lives up to "that" particular achievement.
