And everything that you read on the internet is true, right? If so, it's pretty easy to apply the same principle to the premise of the original issue. For example, here's another rumor for you to mull: it's all over the internet that the guy whose spaceship the Mittani threatened to blow up made up the whole thing about his divorce and suicide to make the goons feel sorry for him so that they would reimburse his lost ships. It was simply another scam. Except the goons didn't fall for it.
See? Belief in rumors can be a tricky business. Perhaps it's time to grind your axe on another game.
Maybe you should save some of your outrage for the people that threatened to rape the Mittani's wife and kill his dog. Because those things are worse that blowing a guy's internet spaceship up, wouldn't you agree?
Echoing what edgecrusherO0 said, there is no more low-level ganking in pve areas. They changed the rifting mechanic a while ago to prevent that behavior.
"defending and justifying the very behavior that many people find repugnant."
No, I am not. His action was repugnant. I'm not defending that.
What I am defending is that he does not reflect the whole of the EVE community. He does not. The best way to do that is to speak out here and offer people a chance to see the good part of the community, ingame.
There is a difference between harassing a character ingame to harassing someone in RL outside of the game. The MIttani asked other players to harass a character, *ingame*. No real names were used. Conversely, the Mittani and his family are being harassed in real life, where real names are known. If we must attach the "cyber bully" tag to someone, it would be to the people going after the Mittani in real life. (this does not excuse his actions at the alliance panel, which were just plain awful)
As for the EVE community, the best of any MMO, I'd like to personally offer to you any help that you need in getting started with EVE. Money, equipment, advice, fleet fun, etc. Just look me up ingame and I'll show you how the good, majority side of EVE players act
I've played for 6 years and never ran into The Mittani. Go figure. EVE is a HUGE universe that gives you the freedom to go where you want, and interact with whom you want. Avoiding pirates and scammers is not hard.
If you do give EVE a try, look me up. I can get you started with advice, ISK, ships, and whatever else you need. Maybe we can even fleet up for some fun so I can show you the positive, *majority* side of the EVE population.
Thanks for setting the record straight, Brandon. It's seems like you, and others who know the truth about EVE's community (it's the best out there), want to frame the narrative of this incident correctly. Unfortunately, it's the drama seekers, EVE-haters, and misdirected white knighters amongst Massively's posters that tend to drive the comments section.
I've always appreciated your EVE Evolved articles, no more so than now. It's unfortunate that this incident occurred, especially at a time when EVE has such upward momentum with Crucible, Inferno, and Dust. I know that you like the game as much as I do, and look forward to your future articles.

Apr 2nd 2012 11:23AM (Massively)I don't think anyone disagrees with that. The Mittani himself has said as much, repeatedly.
