Man I hate listening to "business types" speaking on conference calls or in meetings. They're rhetoric is so contrived and phony. They think adding an "-azation" or "-ality" to every other word makes themselves sound more competent when all it does is sounds insincere and insecure in themselves and there products or abilities.
Example: "We feel that a better estimazation of possible launch perimeters would be have more feasiblity from a success-based matrix if we focus on the "seasonality" of the best possible "commercialization" of said product..."
Blah, blah...business jargon bulls#%!
Sorry I just hate hearing this kind of abuse of the english language and shady double-talk from any kind of "business person". It just makes me sick.
Otherwise I can't wait for GW2 and I hope all this posturing in the conference call actually means that they want the game out before the summer ("seasonality"), and that they don't want to wait until the end of the year like they did with Aion (which they specific mention as a flawed launch due to it's late in the year release).
Bring on GW2 and more ArenaNet devs, AND LESS CORPORATE SHILLS WHO SOUND LIKE MINDLESS ROBOTS SPOUTING OUT MEANINGLESS COMPANY PROPAGANDA.
2 of my friends who knew nothing of the game until I told them to sign up to the beta a few months ago BOTH got invites today, while I've been signed up since day 1 of the original beta announcement and been signed up on SWTOR since Oct. 2009 and I DID NOT GET ONE?!?!
I know it's random and blah, blah so don't start with all that and don't yell at me for whining, it's just depressing that my 2 idiot friends who are clueless got in and me, the 3 year vet of waiting, didn't get one!
This was a common refrain months and months ago when they released some "heads" of the new models. They were referring to the Atrox (the bulky genetically engineered asexual race). They did look a bit "too asian", hehe. It made for quite a bit of levity.
But I only bring this up to assure you guys that YES, the character models are being redone as well as the environments. However I don't think they are updating the animations however, which are quite dated.
AO was originally being transferred to the Ogre Engine in 2008, but was then totally scrapped and they decided to use Funcom's own Dreamworld Engine instead, hence the long, LONG delay. Honestly the game is really impressive and I've played on and off for years. But to me, with SWTOR getting released soon and the fact that this "facelift" is only cosmetic, this is all too little, too late IMO.
Also the AO dev team is only a very few people at this point. About 7 or 8 people at any one time, so it's taking forever to get this released and even then there won't be much in the way of new content. But I wish them well and have very fond memories of this game. It's old school difficult and has a massive learning curve and lack of themepark features, but if you get passed all that, there's a gem of an MMO in there somewhere! :)
At least they are trying (as with everything in the game) to add some innovation.
And I had a thought. What if the recipes were randomly generated within certain perimeters for every new character you create? For instance, to make "Armor piece X" on one character it takes materials "A, B and C", but then for another character it takes, "A, C and F"???
Obviously keeping the materials and items practical. Like instead of "Iron" to make this Sword here, it's Steel. Or instead of Ashwood to make this wand, it's 3 pieces of Spruce???
Like that. That way every character will have to rediscover for that particular "alt" what the recipes are.
Hey Larry I just started playing Rift this month also and I'm really lovin' the unique social interactions created by Rifts and Zone Events.
If I can make some suggestions I'd recommend you try Faeblight realm (PvE-RP). I started on Galena but it's ok yet not a strong community. Faeblight however has been amazing.
Also as far a profs are concerned, they are not very important or impactful while you're leveling IMO. There's no benefits to your character's stats so I'd pick what you like, or go with all the gathering profs on your main and make crafting alts. Like LotRO, there's no level requirements for crafting profs so a level 5 alt can max out a prof.
Also learn the MACRO system very well. It's, without a doubt, the best one in an MMO I've seen in over 10 yrs of playing. I learned it well and now the combat feels more fun and less tedious. Read up about builds and macros for your class. Cleric "Duracell" build btw, is AMAZING!
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help out. I've learned A LOT about the game this first month and can help you with some starting woes perhaps.
I'm a huge fan of Anarchy Online, but that being said, Funcom has to prove to me they can release a stable game at launch. They never have before and their 2 other games (AO, AoC), while being great in a lot of ways, suffered dramatically from a terrible release.
C'mon Funcom. This very well may be your last shot. Get it right. Cook the game longer and polish it up real nice like!!! :)
