I actually really like monk or martial arts type classes. I used to always try to get fist weapons on my rogue because I thought punching stuff was cool. A whole class based around that makes me want to check it out which is bad because after 6 years of WoW I said I was done. I will have to just try to ignore any more WoW expansion news to resist temptation.
@Knuxson Clarification on my clarification (sorry! I wish I could edit): the minstrel I mentioned was created during my one month of VIP but I didn't start leveling her until after my VIP month ended and her traits still automatically unlocked when I reached the required level.
@Knuxson Clarification: if you sub for a month you unlock all trait slots even if you haven't reached the minimum level for that trait slot. I have not had to spend TP to unlock trait slots on the minstrel I have been leveling. When I reach the level for that trait slot it is automatically unlocked without spending TP.
I am a F2P player and it is great to inform new players on what they should expect and on the best way to spend TP in the game. There were a few times when I first started playing that I spent TP on things I wish I hadn't. For instance, you can spend TP to expand your vault. However, all but the last 2 vault upgrades I believe can be upgraded with in-game gold. I spent TP on two vault upgrades before I realized and I was kicking myself.
I also would stress that new players go ahead and subscribe for a month because you save quite a bit of money on getting your bags and removing the currency cap. Also, this article says that you retain any trait slots you unlocked during the month but actually you unlock ALL trait slots for any characters that you log on as during that month of VIP. I can vouch for that because I subbed for one month and I have not had to spend any TP to unlock trait slots on my existing characters. However, if you make a new character after your VIP month is over you would have to spend TP on traits.
I have reached the point on my TP spending that I can't think of anything I want to buy. I eventually got all the quest packs, instances, skirmishes, and a few other things like auction house slots and shared storage. The great thing about being a F2P player, even though you might spend a good chunk of money to get all the content that you want, is that if you continue playing for awhile it will eventually pay for itself because you won't be paying a monthly fee.
@(Unverified) They may not be saying anything now but if accounts were compromised we will hear about it. In most states a company whose data has been breached is required to notify those affected by the breach within a certain amount of time (usually within a few days time if I remember correctly).
I came back to play SWG a few months before its shut-down was announced. I decided I wanted to focus on crafting since it is something I never got into when I used to play. So I made a crafter and was enjoying the hell out of managing all my resource gathering machines at their various locations and giving out free drinks at the Mos Eisley cantina to promote my products. When I was close to perhaps making a storefront the announcement happened.
I kind of wanted to stay but I didn't feel like there was much point as a crafter to continue trying to build up a business that was going to be torn down anyway. So in the end I decided not to stick around for the sunset months. RIP SWG, hopefully more games can take tips from you and provide gamers with some fun things to do besides killing things and raiding.
I understand the concern for SWToR. If Bioware expects it to last for several years I would have hoped they would have attempted to innovate on MMO gameplay a little. That said, I don't necessarily dislike the old MMO style combat and, if done well, it feels nice to be in familiar territory. This is especially true for me if other aspects of the game such as story are done really well. I will definitely play this game up to level cap just to experience the story that Bioware has crafted. Then, if there are things to do beside warzones and operations, I will decide if it is worth it to stick around.
Guild Wars 2 does sound very impressive. I get tired of the holy trinity because it can make combat so rigid. I am very interested in trying out Guild Wars 2's take on MMO combat. The personality options for determining story elements also is intriguing. I hope to hear more about that in the near future.
@Infestimus I have to agree with you there. When I was playing Rift I was actually very impressed by Trion. I probably would still be playing if the story and world had been more interesting, which is a big deal for me.
