The importance of playtesting: What Portal 2 could have been

Mar 8th 2012 9:21PM (Joystiq)
Stuff like this always blows my mind, in a bad way.

It's depressing to realize that the amazing experience you went through *was not the originally intended experience*. The game isn't amazing because they wrote it to be amazing. The game is amazing because they wrote a piece of shit with crappy gameplay mechanics nobody liked, then they refined it, refined it, refined it, and refined it some more.

It's unfortunate to realize stuff like that- that the end result was not the original idea. That they didn't make this game out of sheer genius- they screwed up, a lot, and it took a bunch of external input before they came up with something good.

Same goes for books, movies....I hate reading that the original story to something ended in a completely asinine way that would've made me hate the series, stuff like that.

Witcher 2 devs: 'We will never use any DRM anymore'

@alzeer It doesn't require physiucal threat to count as blackmail, dude.

"Give us exorbitant amounts of money or we get you in legal trouble" is blackmail. It's also unbelievably shady, illegal, and unacceptable.

Witcher 2 devs: 'We will never use any DRM anymore'

@ipsum The point is I do not believe they are legitimately doing this.

I do not believe they earnestly think DRM is not worth bothering with. I think there's definitely a huge chance they're *only* doing this because they want people to forget about what they did before.

They were so mad about piracy that they illegally blackmailed people for 2000% the cost of the game. That's a huge deal. That's a huge dedication to being pissed about piracy. But suddenly their opinions are the absolute opposite? Don't give a crap? That seems really unlikely to be sincere.

Rumor: Leaked pre-visualization SimCity 5 trailer purports 2013 launch window

@LaughingTarget That is why I noted it looks til-tshift. Tilt-shift photography makes things look like small models- the depth of field and whatnot make scenes, real or otherwise, look like they're actually very small models. I suspect these scenes ARE computer generated, but are shot tilt-shifted.

The landscape looks kinda cruddy, and not in a "model table" kind of way, in a "crappy computer generated landscape" kind of way.

Looks like it might be tilt-shift. Not sure if that affects the lighting too much, but I am not a fan of the lighting at all. Where are the bright colors of the concept art? This looks hideous. Incredibly generic appearance, I guess, is what I'm getting from it.

Jet Set Radio trailer features self-referential graffiti

I like how they still haven't said a word about the music.

Keeping people in the dark about it won't make them any happier when you reveal that 80% of it will be missing.

No Violence Necessary: The case for The Sims as a role-playing game

Mar 3rd 2012 10:40AM (Joystiq)
@Lucas Fenix "A role playing game is characterised as a game where you are playing a role."

You are stupid. RPG comes from Pen and Paper RPGs. The terminology applied to video games refers to games that adopted the stat-based growth system of pen and paper RPGs. To say "RPG literally means any game where you play a role IE all games ever" is the stupidest thing anybody who claims to be a gamer can possibly say.

Save on enough Myst games for a full lifestyle change

Mar 3rd 2012 10:38AM (Joystiq)
Myst is a baffling game to me. It won award after award and praise upon praise, all for being "truly challenging". It wasn't for the 98% nonexistent story, it wasn't for the visuals, it was for the challenge.

But myst is not Challenging. Myst is challenging in the same way Superman 64 is challenging. The puzzles in Myst aren't puzzles- they're guessing games. They give you the vaguest possible hints (if any hints at all) and set you free to do trial and error until you figure it out.

That's not a puzzle! It's hard, but it's not a challenging puzzle.

@FuzzyPierce Oh, and meanwhile, I have to make the house impressive so I can manage the mood of a Headmaster to get the child into private school so they'll have more scholarships when they go to college.

It's layer upon layer upon layer of micromanagement
