@Lenn

Was my thought as well Lenn. Didn't someone do something similiar in Half Life some years ago? Anyone recall?

The Queue: Why it's not time for a warlock tank

Apr 3rd 2012 1:37PM (WoW)
Doesn't surprise me, I know that for many years Slim1256 that my main was a holy/tank spec paladin. Even before we could dual spec I collected gear for five specs. Dps PvP, Dps PvE, Tank PvE, Healing PvP and Healing PvE. Just became a burn out because I wanted to experience things with other classes, my rogue and mage got a lot more play after a while as did my hunter.

I'd just like to see all classes be able to do two job roles, I don't think we need to see them do all three like the paladin and druid can. Heck I'd be fine if they removed the ability for those two classes to do all three well.

Breakfast Topic: Do you like PvP?

Apr 3rd 2012 12:28PM (WoW)
The name of the mmo-rpg is WARcraft, so yeah I'm a fan of pvp. I refuse to play on PvE servers for that matter, I refer to them as WoW-Lite actually. My wife plays on a WoW-Lite server, tried to play there but just couldn't get into being on a non pvp server.

I just don't feel that sense of rush when I play on non-pvp servers, though since they made it so we could fly everywhere the rush has faded. Another point I'd like to make is that even on a pvp server or in the battlegrounds it isn't as if there are real penalties, there is no death sting mechanics. Brush yourself off and get back into the fight and rather quickly.

My wife actually does quite a bit of pvping in the BGs these days I've noted with her main, a rogue. Her mad clicking of her Razer naga mouse drive me a bit batty at times. lol. Glad she is having fun with it though and is no longer intimidated by pvping.

The Queue: Why it's not time for a warlock tank

Personally I think that "all" classes should be able to spec into two of the three types of jobs in WoW. Puging as a DPS blows and isn't much better in a guild. Why? Because everyone can DPS, only some can heal or tank.

So yeah, I'd love to see warlocks able to tank or BM hunters for that matter with the right tank in heroics. As it stands at times I'm surprised the majority of players don't play either a druid or paladin since those two classes can spec in all three jobs in WoW.

Drama Mamas: Should a WoW widow become a WoW player?

If he wasn't doing the stay at home chores, I am sure that would have come up in the letter. What I think needs to happen is he needs to stop being a typical male and make time for her when she gets home.

I know in our house hold we are in a similar situation with me being retired. I play a few mmo-rpgs, she does as well so that does work out. That said, I make sure I spend time with her when she is home. Priorities is what it is all about.

It is far to easy to get into a routine and not realize that you are being selfish, men are very prone to this, speaking as one of them. :)

Kissing cousins: SWTOR's legacy system explained

Mar 31st 2012 2:57PM (Massively)
@Dunraven

I think that many aspects of the Legacy system and how they can expand upon it are quite nice. I just still have one issue with it and it has been an issue with it since I first learned of it last fall. And that is the whole "one" surname for all my characters on the same server, regardless of race or faction.

I know for many this is not an issue but for me it was an immersion deal breaking issue and I never could get why Bioware didn't get this. Player raged about it a lot on their forums only to be ignored. Also I always roll up all my characters right a way and tend to dabble in the various classes so I can get a better feel. I guess I should have waited and not rolled up all the slots and advanced them some levels.

The Daily Grind: What originally got you into MMOs?

Yep, Compuserve, GEnie, AOL and Prodigy in the early days all had hourly charges that ranged depending on service and in some cases the areas of the service you were at.

I know I personally spend enough over a 6 year period to have bought an new economy car in full. It wasn't a cheap hobby by any means. It wasn't uncommon for many players to complain about their credit card melting.

I personally tried to keep my soft limit at under 500.00 a month though there were some months that I'd wander up to 1k a month. This was not a cheap hobby, most of us who played had good paying job/careers or were wealthy already who could afford to play. I personally only knew one minor who played Gemstone III in the early days consistantly, his parents were wealthy and I assume didn't blink at his online bill.

The only other type of players who could be on that much were those who worked for the services. They had what was called "Free Flag Accounts " or "Over Head Accounts" , that is at least the two terms I recall being used by GEnie and Aol. They didn't get charged, was a sweet deal but it had limitations to.

The Daily Grind: What originally got you into MMOs?

For me it was due to being a long term table top gamer, playing both tactical games and rpg games etc from 1978 onward. While in Europe I started noting adds for Gemstone II/III on GEnie in the back of Dragon Magazine. I knew I couldn't afford the phone rates to play from Europe so I had to wait two more years until 1992 to get in and give it a try.

I felt it was a natural progression from table top to go online. As you get older finding players you want to play with long term grew harder. I could go into detail for a few paragraphs as to how I used to gather players for my long term rpg campaign I ran from 1980 to 1996 but that doesn't have much to do with this topic, so I'll skip that. :)

Anyhow returning in 1992 I quickly got into Gemstone III and Mult-Player Battle 3025(Mechwarrior), both on GEnie. I also noted Never Winter Nights was played on AOL, though simplistic in its graphical nature it had a very vibrant community so I got into that as well.

Then there was forays into Drakkar and Sierras Imagination network, Red Baron, Kesmai's Air Warrior on GEnie as well as AUSI's DragonsGate on GEnie and some dabbling in A Hundred Years War on GEnie as well.

By 1995 I was pretty much decided that the future of gaming as I knew it was online, though the hourly charges were quite high at the time I assumed it would be only a matter of time before pricing changed. (Glad I was correct on that).

Was about the time I was beta testing Dragonrealm on GEnie before it was released that I noted I wasn't doing much table top gaming anymore. People have jobs/careers, kids etc and it just gets harder and harder to gather your group up for gaming night(s). By 1998 I'd given my massive table top gaming library to an old Army buddy and called it a day for table top and never looked back.

The Road to Mordor: Will the instance finder take off?

Mar 31st 2012 2:32PM (Massively)
Why I see cross server as a good thing is that it allows dps classes more chances to actually get into running heroics/instances. The trinity is one of the short comings to grinding heroics, since there are so many classes that can do dps plus one other job. Healing or tanking for example.

In my opinion they should have never allowed healing or tank classes to be able to change spec into dps. It led to way to many classes who could dps. Either that or "All" classes should be able to do two of the three types of specs.

As far as a break down of commnunity, I played on a WoW pvp server and we had a great community until Blizzard changed the rules. What I mean is when they started allowing both faction play on a pvp server the community went to crap. I recall that was about the time I started using a whisper blocker addon more often as well.

I honestly don't see the cross server aspect breaking LotRO's community, I just see it giving more dps classes a chance to run heroics and that would be a good thing. You'll have less bitter dps players who can now take part in instances that normally didn't get much chance often. I know I wrote off running much heroics in LotRO years ago personally. Unless I was in the mood to play my healer or tank that is, then I got all the instance runs I wanted.

The Daily Grind: Would you pay extra for a filtered community?

@Borick

Ah but you can Borick, we did it in the 1990s and it worked and it still works over in Simutronics games. It does work. It just requires man power, which costs money. Simutronics system for how the Host and GM were paid made for a low cost way to do it.

Self policing is the report function which alerts staff to an issue for them to check out. That is the best version of self policing, they did try self policing in Simutronics games with a system called the "Sheriff" system, players abused it.
