It started with a hankering for a persistent world I could do RPG stuff in (had already been fan of games like Breath of Fire and Dragon Quest). I tried finding a simple free game and landed on this little game called Tibia. It wasn't anything to write home about, so later on I decided to try WoW. It was about a year after its release and like so many, I got hooked. The rest is history, I guess.

Agreed. It's a shame there's been (and still is) such a large group openly betting against it, since there's a lot to like about it. Sure, there's a wide open frontier of MMO design still to explore, but I don't think that detracts from my enjoyment of what we have now.

I'd love to read a compelling argument for stagnation in modern music. That's one I think is definitely exaggerated.

Players trend towards the path of least resistance. If you give them a convenient tool for joining groups, they'll use it. But just because it serves its purpose doesn't mean there aren't side effects. LFG tools are great, but as far as community goes, they seem to disconnect and weaken player relationships.

I wouldn't go so far as to say LFG tools alone are the culprit--because quest/leveling design also affects this greatly--but they're part of it. I think the themepark design paradigm necessitates them, though. Any game with group instances where participation is at the mercy of variables like level, server population, prime play times, and incentives probably needs one.

I dunno, I'm still enjoying myself. Playing through a Jedi Knight right now. People get so caught up in yammering about this stuff. If it dies, it dies. Whatever. Just play what makes you happy, jeez.

Then again, I should probably stop reading the comments on SWTOR Massively articles. I don't think I've ever seen an article that's avoided the hate brigade.

I think people just got so used to hating on TOR that they forgot to stop when it wasn't as bad as the doomsayers would have us believe. Granted, it was always a pretty decent title, but it's been a convenient scapegoat for MMO players' grievances against the genre.
