The Daily Grind: Are social media connections in MMOs useless?

May 18th 2011 9:42AM (Massively)
It's useless for players. It's free advertising for the developers, which is why they include it.

Atari: Cryptic Studios a 'discontinued operation' [Updated]

I love how it's a F2P game making the largest losses, and yet we still have to hear all the F2P fanboys saying that a "proper" F2P setup is the answer to all of life's problems.

I also love how, in the recent criticism of MUO's plans, people held up Champions as the "proper" way to do a superhero MMO, when it turns out it had been loosing millions of dollars. Maybe a world populated by millions of generic superheroes isn't as compelling as everyone claimed it was?

To be honest, I have a hard time seeing another major publisher picking them up.

The Daily Grind: Are you interested in mobile MMOs?

I don't really see the point of them, just from a time perspective. If I'm going to spend the length of time of an average MMO session playing a game, I'd rather do it on a full size screen.

@sortius

It's 1 million per user.

Seriously, if you are going to complain about the terms of the coverage, at least read them first.

NCsoft shutting down Lineage in North America

@Fakeassname

Really? Over 10 profitable years isn't good enough for you? Keeping in mind that there is already a sequel out, which is still profitable.

And as much as everyone (frequently including myself) loves to hate on NCSoft, they have at least done an admirable job at not screwing up GW.

NCsoft shutting down Lineage in North America

@Germaximus

If you read the announcement, they are apparently giving current players access to every other NCSoft game, plus two months free game time for each.

I never played it, but if people enjoyed it, it's sad to see it go. Eventually this will happen with every mmo, it's just part of the business.

The US military has made games in the past for promotional purposes, which I imagine is what this is really about.

Jump into Drakensang Online with a closed beta key from Massively [Updated]

@LeStryfe79

They've already said that the used keys are being given out due to a bug, which they are working on. If you are patient, you could probably end up getting one. And I really don't think many people would actually pay for a beta key for a F2P browser game, with relatively little buzz at this point, so I doubt sellers are the issue.

The key I got works. Its a bit annoying that they won't let you use it on a preexisting account though. I had to start up a new one in order to use it.
