Captain's Log: Interview with Cryptic's Al Rivera, part two

Apr 16th 2012 8:41AM (Massively)
Regarding the levelling curve, the issue for me is that I barely get familiar with my ship and I already have a better one. It shouldn't be possible to get 10 ranks in one day, not even the first 10 ranks. The game doesn't explain much and the tooltips are quite confusing (as well as the skill explanations and so on) so leaving the levelling this fast is a bad idea.

First official MechWarrior Online trailer drops into action

@(Unverified) I've probably been too harsh, it's just doing anything more than an arena based game takes a lot of manpower, money and a great deal of balancing. Looking at the forum things like the speed of mech production, no melee, no infantry and tanks, heat, jump jets... it looks really difficult to create. I'd love to be able to recreate scenes from the books such as ambushes, being able to body-check, go prone and snipe away, or simply use my favourite mechs (Shadow Hawk, Marauder or Panther).

Same as before, another CGI trailer... I'd like to see my favourite mechs but until I see actual gameplay...

Guild Wars 2 console version confirmed

Feb 15th 2012 1:10PM (Massively)
@Silverangel Most games don't offer such a variety of spells that you’d want to use all of them. The complexity isn’t in being quick and pressing the right skill out of the 30 you have but in having to prepare a build and be able to change parts of the skill bar on the fly. In essence you have the same amount of skill, just not at the same time, but there are ways to “unlock” those skills in combat. So there is complexity, just of a different kind. Again, this is not for everyone and it doesn’t have to appeal to everyone.

Guild Wars 2 console version confirmed

Looking at the Witcher 2 I was a bit angry because some of the design decisions were made with consoles in mind later on so I'm a bit worried about that in GW2. Other than that if they make cross-platform play available (for those people who want to, not forced on everybody) I'd be really happy to see a console version. FYI I'm intrigued by the Dust 514 concept but I’ll probably never own a console and it's an FPS which makes cross-platform play impossible to balance. If a console player wants to play a good action RPG the option of GW2 would be great.

Flameseeker Chronicles: We don't need no stinkin' endgame

Feb 3rd 2012 1:27PM (Massively)
Long story short, I just hate the assumption that there is no endgame, that's why I refuse to agree with anyone saying that there is no endgame. Like "it's true that there are no raids, but" - no, it's not!? Don't feed the trolls! I hate the sensationalism of "ooooh maaa gaaaaawd, there is no endgame, there is no divine trinity, yada yada yada". Just don't feed them, there is no need to defend the lack of endgame because there is no lack of endgame.
The end (pun intneded).

The Daily Grind: Could you make your own MMO for $30 million?

Feb 2nd 2012 9:46AM (Massively)

I don't know if it was Rubi who said it recently on the podcast but "concepts are cheap" so yeah, I have a ton of concepts. Do I have the skills? Hell no! :D If anything I'd love to have the money to hire people who have the skills to make it happen. On top of that, every one man show becomes imbalanced sooner or later – I’ve played on a server made by basically one person, some aspects very incredibly good, some unbelievably terrible. I spent hours trying to explain one particular problem but he just couldn’t see it. Other than that I’d definitely like to do this. It’s like a gamers dream, Lego (Minecraft for the younglings) for the rich :). Right now I can think of TaleWorlds for a Mount and Blade MMO or Starbreeze for something SF.

Leaderboard: Play the game vs. play the system

Jan 17th 2012 9:36AM (Massively)
I don't think it's that simple. In a heavy customisable game I can’t enjoy myself if I clearly see I made some big mistakes – in DnD games it took me like first three or four character to get the hang of it. On the same account, I made one character extremely overpowered just to experience it and prove the point I was trying to make – nerf it. I can’t really play a game without thinking about the numbers but my goal is to enjoy the game while being satisfied with the numbers not to ignore the game and play the system.

Leaderboard: Free-form space combat vs. on-the-rails shooter

Jan 11th 2012 5:38AM (Massively)
A while ago I was angry that just another game (Black Prophecy) uses atmospheric flight physics instead of spaceflight. If you put in some arbitrary speed limits for the sake of ping it's not so difficult to make, yet game developers seem to go for the simplistic models. Let's just hope that the on-rails in SWTOR is a placeholder.
PS: We need Freelancer Online :).
