The Soapbox: Subs and cash shops - Two great tastes that taste awful together

Aug 30th 2011 9:50AM (Massively)
I was very interested in Secret World.... until this announcement was made. Will I play the beta? Sure. Will I purchase the game? Doubtful.

The market is saturated with free to play offerings that give you a LOT of content to explore and spend your time in without dropping $15 a month to experience it. When simplified down to the base components gripping players, MMOs are a time sink. True, some people find more such as social groups, emotional attachments, escapes from reality, a way to continue long-range relationships, the start of a hobby, or just enjoying their time there. Regardless of why you play an MMO, you're still sinking countless hours into it over time.

I've spent more money on league of legends than I did in my several outings in World of Warcraft up through WotLK. One of the reasons is because I know that at the end of the day, if I want to drop the game for six months, I can come back at any time without paying a dime and get the entire 100% experience the game has to offer. I've now played league since beta, but never would've continued with the game if I had to pay a monthly fee. That being said, I still sometimes subscribe to an MMO for the experience it offers, but not for long periods of time.

If I play a subscription game, I want to have access to 100% of the content from that game excluding expansions without being nickle and dimed to eternity by a cash shop offering items, weapons, or cosmetics. If they sell something I can't get just by sinking some time into the game, it makes me less likely to continue playing the game. I stopped playing WoW when they started offering exclusive mounts and pets from their cash shop. I know I don't have to buy them, but I get a bad taste in my mouth when the companies try to bully players into spending extra money on top of the already hefty subscription.

To me, I feel they companies get greedy over time and eventually lead to a game's failure. Many games are starting to do this. Back to my league example, the champions are all being released at higher and higher IP costs, almost forcing players who want new champions but don't have time to grind IP to purchase them outright.

TL:DR- Subscription in short spurts? Fine. Cash shop only with cosmetic items? Fine, if the game is F2P.

Combine them? Adios.

The Daily Grind: Are tiny races persecuted?

You know why people look down on them? When you go into a PVP game they run around you without a care in the world, because you can't click on them to pick them out of the crowd. So you frantically tap auto-target, praying you can snag one of them before it's too late. It won't help, however, as you can never see the target highlight on them until it passes them by far too quickly.

Then you begin to run as quickly as possible away from those short devils while their tiny little rogues stab you in the back. Meanwhile, a group for 30 mini mages stand behind a single massive tank, shielding them from view.

As your entire PvP group falls to the little bastards you curse silently as you weep to yourself, the tears falling freely to your keyboard.

This is why I enjoy playing small characters.

Free for All: Using a controller to play your favorite MMO

For those of you using an X360 controller, can you bind a button to ventrilo for PTT?

I think that's the deciding factor on whether I go buy one right now..

@Eamil Well that's the thing, I kept switching between my PC and my PS3 with it since they're both hooked up to the same entertainment center.

When I'd switch though, the drivers would get corrupted and the controller would start flashing its charge lights until it died.

The only way to prevent this was to re-pair the controller with the PS3 each time, which would then result in having to reinstall the driver software to use the controller on PC again.

Convoluted, drove me mad. I'll keep my PS3 controllers on my PS3 from not on, hah!

I'm planning on picking up a 360 controller for Skyrim's release, and I know it works well in several MMOs or action games, such as Vindictus or FFXIV.

I've used my PS3 controllers on my PC before, but the amount of work to get the drivers running eventually turned me away from it. Every time you unplug the controller you'd have to reinstall the drivers, and then I started getting strange glitches from the software.

Downloaded and installed it last night. I didn't get into a game yet, just past the character creator. I did like what I saw however, and am planning on jumping back into it tonight. Looks like a fun time.

The Daily Grind: Do you like optimizing your character?

Aug 19th 2011 8:54AM (Massively)
I'll scroll through handfuls of online guides and analyze charts, tables, and the like; just to make sure the character I want to play is fairly up to their full potential.

I don't consider myself an elitest, however, as although I find it exciting to play to my full potential, I understand others might not want to play the same way and won't put someone else in a negative spotlight in my MMO group just because they aren't doing the same. More like a personal objective for myself. I still have fun doing it regardless, probably my OCD kicking in...
