The biggest hurdle is quality control. I've made this argument a thousand times before in a thousand different quasi-related topics revolving around user-created content.
Its the YouTube argument. Every user-created gem gets inevitably buried in a hundred tons of user-generated crap.
Opening up the medium is great, and there's no doubt that there are insanely talented people out there who use their abilities to the fullest to make great content for no other reason than enjoyment, and I applaud those people to no end. But at the end of the day, there's a significantly larger group of people who create content who simply aren't talented, or aren't as talented as they think they are. And they muck it up for everyone else.
Until a system is developed where user-created content can be created, submitted, and verified for content and quality, and then put out to the masses in a fast and efficient manner, this sort of content won't come into any sort of permanence on a wide level.
And this is different from mods in single-player RPGs, where you can just let the players sort it out themselves. This is an MMO. If you want any sort of persistent world, you have to push the content to everyone. And you don't want to just push crap content and hope if flies because some community members name is in the "Created by:" line.
I finally took down my drums the other day. I've been a near daily player since launch and Rock Band was the only reason I turned my 360 on anymore, but the generally poor DLC offerings for literally the past year got me bored.
And of course now they add Mastadon. Next week they'll probably have a RATM 6-pack and Crisis by Alexisonfire for full-album download.
I finished the main quest line at level 39 in 46 hours and I can't really say I'm compelled to go back and clean up the sidequests/tasks.
I'm going to have to think about getting this. I had a good time playing the game, but I'm not sure I'm at all interested in putting any more time into it.
I love playing with other people. Its why I love MMOs. But I've never been big on it in past games because its just so tedious; having to repeat quests, run in different directions to facilitate other players' quests, killing more mobs then necessary to get items for all the players in your party, etc. etc. etc.
Its absolutely enthralling that ANet have gone above and beyond expectations to truly bring group play back to the forefront of a genre that has increasingly taken a single-player mentality towards gameplay. Can't. Hardly. Wait.
