MMO Family: Do kids belong in guilds?

Apr 4th 2012 6:49PM (Massively)
I've avoided "family friendly" guilds partially because that's where a lot of children end up and I absolutely HATE dealing with them. By and large they've been horrible players, they're beyond annoying in chat and tells, and if you end up in vent ect. with them...

There are plenty of people who enjoy being in guilds with younger members or don't mind the antics of most of the younger players, and that's great. There should be a place for younger, like-minded (i.e. annoying as hell) players to get together and play with others. Just as long as I'm nowhere near it.

Step inside MechWarrior Online's MechLab and choose your weapon

Apr 4th 2012 4:03PM (Massively)
I just realized how utterly perfect MW is as a F2P MMO. Seriously, the amount of customization for your mech has always been great, and you can see it ALL through the cash shop (or for in game currency that takes a long time to grind), as well as all kinds of custom skins for weapons/armor ect. I mean, I can't think of another game off the top of my head that has this level of monetization BUILT IN to the game itself. They don't even need to worry about things like boosts or additional bag slots ect.

BioWare shows off SWTOR's customizable UI in new video

@Joaquin Crowe

It's the embed link that BW sends them. Massively has to post it (basically), so if you get upset with anyone, get upset with BW for being annoying.

Bring your pals to The Old Republic with a newly extended Friends Trial

@MMOaddict

First comment...wonderful. While I'd love for it to go F2P (then I'd have another game to play without paying for it), it has more than enough subscribers to keep it profitable. Ramping up their trial program isn't a sign of "failure", it's a sign that trial programs work and generate new subscribers. What a shock.

The Soapbox: Casual is as casual does

Apr 3rd 2012 5:57PM (Massively)
I've stopped using it as a descriptor for the most part, and never really liked it to begin with. I'm a casual payer now in the sense that I don't have the time to devote to serious PvP or PvE anymore, but still enjoy playing whenever I can.

Instead, I've begun to label the horrible players that usually got labeled as "casuals" as the "dudebro" market or the generic "baddie" players.

These are the guys that use the, "lol, why are you upset we're wiping over and over on easy content because I'm unable to do my job, it's just a game" argument when you express frustration. These are the players that will launch into a tirade if you attempt to give them any kind of helpful, polite, friendly advice/pointers about how to improve their performance if it's poor. If anyone is ruining games it's these two groups.

Dudebros and the mass market appeal are quite possibly the worst thing to happen to serious gamers (regardless of the amount of time said serious gamers have), as they've caused gaming in general to become watered down and generally cater to the lowest common denominator.

The Daily Grind: Which MMO doesn't get the respect it deserves?

Apr 3rd 2012 10:19AM (Massively)
I agree with a ton of others. Vanguard really never got the respect it deserved. For how disappointingly buggy it was (it was an absolute wreck at launch, which is a damn shame), the game did a TON of awesome stuff. Prior to, say, Guild Wars 2, its easily one of the most revolutionary/evolutionary big title MMO's to come out since WoW. There are SO many amazing features in the game that I wish had trickled out to other games. But sadly, the insanely botched launch doomed the game to remain in the shadows in maintenance mode.

Hopefully the F2P relaunch (super stoked about it) can turn things around and get the game the respect it deserves.

Prime World charges women less to play, 'protects' them in mixed groups [Updated]

Apr 3rd 2012 10:16AM (Massively)
Justin, I am disappoint. The discount works BOTH ways.

http://kotaku.com/5898398/this-game-offers-discounts-to-men-who-play-as-men

Men get charged less for male characters, females get charged less for female characters.

That being said, the defensive buff is retarded, their monetization scheme is retarded, and the game looks retarded (lolfacebookgame). Seriously, we don't need developers actively trying to force players into gender identification, but I guess we shouldn't expect much from a facebook "game" developer.

Be vewy vewy quiet; we're hunting demons: A look at Diablo III's Demon Hunter

Apr 2nd 2012 4:27PM (Massively)
I'm still interested in this and would LOVE to play a demon hunter (it's the been the class I've been looking at since it was announced), but the always on DRM is complete BS and I'm still not a fan of the RMAH (it's not made of pure evil, but I don't think it's healthy for gaming as a whole).

Wings Over Atreia: Fools and tools

Apr 2nd 2012 2:08PM (Massively)
@Heiltdo

PvP doesn't start until like lvl 30 or so (when you get out of the first 2 noobie areas). That and it is a PvP centric game, so while getting ganked by a max level character is annoying as hell, it's something that should be more or less expected.
