If WW3 breaks out, we'll be playing with rocks, rusty tin cans and spent shell casings in a cave somewhere with our mutant three-eyed dog by our side. Can't wait.
Started playing DCUO recently and am really loving it. Was skeptical when it first came out for a few reasons, but it's a very solid game despite some server issues (lag, downtime, disconnects). I could also do without the abundance of stupid kids named "Harry Balzac" but hey, that's MMOs for you. At least until someone makes a Masterpiece Theatre MMO for us monocle-wearing upper crusters. Jeeves! Fetch me my smoking jacket.
You absolutely nailed it. Same could be said for some of these F2P First Person Shooters *especially* when the cash shop allows you to buy better guns.
Why bother? Spend $20 on a decent game and play it for years without worrying your opponents bought their way to victory.
I suspect games like this are popular with credit card-less kids who might occasionally manage to talk mom into coughing up $10 for some power-ups or a game card at WalMart.
Gee, do I really want to play online with a bunch of gothy 14 year olds?
If anything I'd say this is in keeping with the spirit of most PnP RPGs. The whole respawn without penalty (or reload a previous save in single-player RPGs) is something you never see in PnP, unless you have a very liberal and forgiving DM.
Imperials outnumber Republic 3:1? Why am I not surprised?
Why is it the vast majority of gamers want to be "evil" wear black and red and name their character Nightraven Blackarrow or something equally pretentious?
It's almost like MMOs need to make the "good" guys slightly more powerful just to balance out this inevitable outcome.
That's true. Instead of "Kill 10 rats" quests you get "Kill 10 Borg" quests. Totally different. Actually, "Kill 10 Borg" was one of my favorite episodes of TNG. I remember Picard was like "negotiate? strategize? solve a puzzle? Nah... give me my ginormous laser cannon and let's beam down there and fry some Borg butt!"
