At 6m0s in the second video he's talking about customization/progression and how it's going to be an horizontal progression to open to different play styles (a time-rich player won't be OP in comparison to a talented casual). This is exactly why we need these FPSMMOs to be successful to influence the whole MMO industry. The time of horizontal progression (skill and social proof) is coming.
The huge vertical stats separation at end game between the same two classes/build can definitely be avoided. It's called fair-play. In real life doping is considered not ethical, in MMO it is considered normal, even better it is glorified. Heroes there take pleasure at beating an other player with half his HP and DPS.
That why I'm going to GW2 for my PvP in few months. You'll aslo have some surprises when MMOFPS will enter the market. Enjoy for now.
Having logged social metric since this summer I suspect that the influx of new blood is now on par with WoW and other MMO. In other words I'm don't think the subs base will grow much for now with the current state of SWTOR: https://plus.google.com/u/0/110873640795387924972/posts/exMpUM74QT3
I love the environments in the game but I felt too much separated from other players (vertical stats progression etc).
I would like my MMO to be based on skill and teamwork like in real life sports and games. In real life, drugs are considered as unethical and cheating, in current MMO they are glorified (vertical stats progression separating players fair-play and rendering content obsolete and unchallenging, giving the impression to the player that he's becoming better while in reality his dices are piped).
Today I'm hopeful because a MMO (GW2) decided to be ethical at end-game without stats doping (I link to this cool article I just discovered): http://www.darkademic.co.uk/blog?id=202
"So do you bother with exit surveys?" Yes. I ask them to evaluate the Social Cost of their game design decisions and make Social Proof MMOs. If not, prepare to go down after the initial rush (fresh SWTOR social mining): https://plus.google.com/110873640795387924972/posts/exMpUM74QT3
I think it's a great idea. I love Star Trek and like to tinker with creation tools but they shouldn't oblige to pay a sub to create something in the foundry (even a test). User generated content can increase the lifespan/interest of a MMO and developers should encourage it. I have no problem with paying for stuff in a F2P MMO but it shouldn't be on creation tools. I could have contributed but I won't.
Great video. I really like the agile development approach this MMO seem to take. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agile_software_development It makes sens because within a 5 years development cycle (typical for a AAA MMO) the world and players expectation change. It also make sens because agile development enable a special relationship between developers and users becoming somewhat co-creators. I've just signed for the beta and wishing them the best.
