MMO Family: Do kids belong in guilds?

Apr 4th 2012 7:37PM (Massively)
@Irem
I suppose I didn't mention in my story that they invited me without ever having me fill out an application or asking my age. As a whole, I never had to deal with being excluded for my age since I've played pretty much exclusively with them. I'm not saying it's bad if people want adult-only guilds for reasons like vent discussions and such. I was talking more towards the fact that there are kids that have ability to act like a decent human being and play the game competently. Depending upon the nature of the guild and its players, there can certainly be room for a few kids.

@Dunraven My first guild experience was similar. I think when some players are young and kind of new to the MMO community, they're more polite because they haven't been corrupted yet and still think about real world social norms . If I ever ran a guild, which is doubtful to ever happen, I'd have a don't ask don't tell policy on age. If their behavior becomes a problem, regardless of age, then give 'em the boot.

It's kind of funny, I joined a guild my freshman year of high school, just a few days after LOTRO launched. Not to sound stuck up, but I was mature for my age and my guildmates didn't realize I was under their age requirement until the first time I spoke on vent. I've played with this same core group of players for the past six years now. Some kids are a lot smarter and more mature than some people think and turning them away just because of their age means that both guilds and young players can miss out on some great friendships and experiences.

@laelgon Never mind, for some reason I thought they were getting their own server like China did. Derp.

Am I the only one who wants to play on this server because it's a fresh start? I'd love to play on a server where there are no huge alliances already in place and everyone is just starting out.

Prime World charges women less to play, 'protects' them in mixed groups [Updated]

I'm sorry, what? Can the videogame industry stop acting like adolescent boys? Attempts like this to make girls play games just makes the whole industry look incredibly immature. This is like the service that let's guys pay money to play games with women online. Stuff like this does nothing but hurt the attempt to change the image of the gamer from the basement dwelling virgin that can't interact with people in real life.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that trying to get more women to play is really a means of enticing more guys to play in the hope of playing a game with real live girl.

The Daily Grind: Which MMO doesn't get the respect it deserves?

Apr 3rd 2012 8:22AM (Massively)
Might catch some flak for this, but I'd say EVE Online. It seems like people only ever see stories of scams, theft, or something like the recent insanity. While the "Sociopaths in Space" label definitely applies to some of the players, there's a really rich and engaging gameplay experience beneath all the terrible stories that come out of the game. I've played for over two years and was never harassed, insulted, scammed, or suicide ganked. It's a really unique experience that sets itself apart from every other MMO out there, but sometimes all of that seems to be obscured behind the small number of extreme stories.

The Daily Grind: What originally got you into MMOs?

Anyone remember that show on G4 from years ago, it was called Portal iirc. That was what originally got me to try out MMOs.

The Daily Grind: Would you pay extra for a filtered community?

Mar 29th 2012 8:17AM (Massively)
I would, but not in the paid servers vs free servers type of way. Just because people pay doesn't mean that they make a better community. What I would pay for is some kind of feature that allows your guild or other large group to have their own version of the game world to play in. Then you could have your guild make actual changes to the game world and other large scale adventures built into your instance.

@Danteeeee Yeah, after about 15 minutes I saw that it would be really easy to pay your way to a huge advantage. The "funds" let you buy the ingame currency which allows you to do more research, upgrade bases, etc. It's been pretty fun but I definitely see it being pay2win down the road.
