The Daily Grind: What originally got you into MMOs?

Mar 31st 2012 1:58PM (Massively)
What got me into MMOs was Final Fantasy XI. I really wanted to try everquest when I was in high school, it sounded like exactly what I wanted in a game. Unfortunately the monthly fee was prohibitive...I didn't want my parents knowing I paid monthly for the game and I didn't have a job so what little money I had was left over from Christmas and my birthday. I have always been a final fantasy fan...at the time FFVII was my absolute favorite game...it still kind of is but I don't hold it on such a high pedestal. Anyway, I'm a giant FF fan and that's what finally brought me into MMOs. When FFXI came out I was totally psyched that not only would I be able to play another FF but I'd finally be able to play a MMORPG. It came out in november I think, I didn't have money so I waited until christmas to buy it (I didn't want my parents to know still so I didn't ask for it) with my christmas money.

Perfect World demoing Neverwinter and RaiderZ at PAX East

Mar 30th 2012 5:29PM (Massively)
Every time I see the name RaiderZ I cringe. It's just the worst name for a game I've seen in a long time. I make fun of people who name their characters like that...what would you think I'd do to companies who name their games that way? Just stupid.

Was kind of hoping I'd get in even though I haven't been a subscriber for a while now.

WAR40K devs laid off, game will no longer be an MMO

Mar 29th 2012 4:04PM (Massively)
History proves that MMOs whose financial support is in question always turn out to be bad MMOs and though I'm not a warhammer fan (not that I'm against it either...I'm indifferent) I know the IP is much beloved, especially the 40k variety...would be a shame to see another warhammer mmo fail on its ever devoted fans.

That said I know some people who will be supremely disappointed.

Why I Play: EVE Online

Mar 28th 2012 1:29PM (Massively)
@wesmagyar

That's the problem with EVE though. An experienced player can roll a new account, get the basic skills and then completely destroy players of a couple months with T2 rigs with absolutely no risk to himself. It completely ruins the game for anyone who wants to play solo.

@Miffy Would you accept your natural selection if someone shot you in the face right now? After all, if you're too weak to defend yourself you don't deserve to live right?

Drinking...I have no respect for people who use drinking as an excuse for their actions, even if they own up to them later. If you know you're a jackass while you drink it's your responsibility to never drink again and if this guy were truly "ashamed and sickened" by his remarks he would do exactly that. He could very well have been responsible for a man dying just as certain as a drunk driver is responsible for a death behind the wheel. Luckily, so far that's not the case.

The Daily Grind: How many games have you committed to in your gaming history?

Mar 25th 2012 3:09PM (Massively)
To be honest I haven't really committed to any game. The game I've played the longest is WoW but it was never really a commitment...I've always been kind of on-again-off-again with the game.

FFXI has been my favorite MMO to date because I just a had a blast with it when I first started but it only lasted about 6 months at which point I tell people I quit to play WoW...but truth be told I was like 18 at the time and still living with my parents so they still had a fair amount of control over me...they made me quit. After about a month or two I was invited into the WoW beta. If my parents hadn't forced me to quit though I think I would have stuck with the game...I really did enjoy it. Unfortunately my taste in games have changed and even though I've tried many times to get back into FFXI it just hasn't worked out.

So long story short, I haven't committed to any game but I was committed to FFXI in spirit.

MMObility: A few bad design apples ruin the whole bunch

Mar 23rd 2012 8:21PM (Massively)
I've been trying to tell people for years that complex does not mean hardcore. If your game is so poorly designed that the player is fighting the red tape the game has more than monsters or other players than you've designed a crappy game, not a hardcore one.

The Perfect Ten: Types of loot that get me excited

Mar 22nd 2012 1:39PM (Massively)
The only loot that ever got me excited was the artifact armor and the elemental staves in FFXI. At the time they were both pretty amazing achievements since obtaining the artifact armor is a very involved process and the elemental staves are extremely expensive to buy or make. Also, the artifact armor is super iconic and the elemental staves are just cool.

Also, most items in FFXI aren't really necessary...in most MMOs each armor tier is a large boost to your stats but most of the gear in FFXI is either a modest boost or very specialized (such as the elemental staves).
