EVE, I could run afk bot army while i forage food and resources on the island and then RMT all that cash and hire a rescue party (and buy a summer house in Italy).
And shoot people in the face while I wait for rescue!
Well, I would definately consider it if I could have own server for +40 year old ex-MUD addicts who know how to spell and don't use "lol" as punctuation.
But also, I do like to push myself out of the comfort zone and try new things, so I don't really really like "paywalled" communities, they tend to go "stale" faster due to limited outside influences.
So, like couple of previous posters, I'm of two minds about it.
They're goons, they're in every MMO out there. They're not trying to ruin the game, they're trying to ruin YOUR game - it's not EVE specific, even though they like to inhabit sandboxes more than themeparks.
There are couple of other alliances like that in EVE, but the rest are - serious MMO players. Serious in the way of setting your alarm clock at 4am because "the tower is coming out of reinforced"-serious. Serious in the way of getting into enemy Teamspeak and playing really high-pitch sound to disrupt their fleet command during fight. Serious in the way of infiltrating enemy alliances and disbanding them.
Not the typical "they videogames are fun"-types, but still 99.9% of them are not bullies.
Goons are (among other things). But goons are not EVE-alone phenomena, they're Somthing Awful phenomena.
So you're "doing it wrong", with your EVE/CCP analysis.
Most tripple-A MMO's don't really have communities - they're too big for that. They have a lot of smaller fragmented factions - I currently like my WoW server community (on the Horde side), but I couldn't really say much for the total WoW community.
I miss my old MUD community, but I realize that train left long time ago and the "community" that exists in my head is just old romantic notion of "simpler, better times".
