@iseeit SOE would get more money from the 1-2 day T4 farmers, which even at 15 min represents a significant amount of time, than they would from a 6 month sub. Plus there are 4 T4 style sets to get, so for the truly obsessive (i.e. the people that would spend $100 for the privilege of doing the same 15 minute raid 30+ times in two days) there is still an enticement to keep playing after the first T4 set. Personally, I think lock outs in MMOs are weird in the first place. I'm paying for the game, why not let me play it on my schedule? They aren't there for gameplay, they are there are a substitute for content that keeps some people subbed. Running Gates On April 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th isn't any materially different than running it on April 5th at 18:00, 18:30 19:00, and 19:30.
@AlienFanatic I think he is just being honest admitting that there wasn't enough in Cataclysm for some players to justify two years worth of subscription. If there isn't, it is smart of those players to stop subbing until the new X-Pac comes out. Even getting six months to a year of subs, every two years, from some players is great for Blizzard's bottom line.
@silver001 The DLC has 4 new open world dailies, 3 of them soloable. Three new duos (two of which I did tonight and enjoyed, each takes place over a city block unlike the typical linear "dungeon" instance) and a new alert. It also includes new collections in Gotham, new briefings, and includes new "green" item styles. I found Kung Fu Gui pants. Healers can now get Medieval style gear and Tanks can get Military Tech (I'm guessing Shaman for Controllers then?). It would be extremely inaccurate to say that this DLC is raid dependent. It includes raids, but that is not the same. In scope, this was bigger than the last two DLC packs combined. Between the DLC content and the increased frequency of updates, I think DCUO has really hit its stride.
CoH/CoV had so much content when I stopped playing years ago, that anyone that gets through it all without feeling inclined to buy anything or pay for more content isn't a real customer. Giving them more free content is just throwing good money after bad. Some games could use more free content because the base game was pretty thin to begin with (like DCUO), CoH isn't one of them. The "get players at all costs, even free ones" mentality is going to result in some MMOs becoming updated Pets.com parables. Investors looking at "concurrent users' or "new accounts" over revenue, revenue, and revenue are fools.
@(Unverified) It will be interesting how they do that with Future Batman. Maybe villains will get some narrative love and Future Batman will be a "Big Good" and not a "Big Bad".
