@Greymantle Speaking of games that already screwed the pooch.. and you're going to play Aion? I already did that on their launch day and for a year afterwards when I had four (4) servers to choose from after merges.
Anarchy Online and AoC are still running. Guessing they said "well, if these other Funcom games haven't shut down as AAA mmos, I think Funcom will be running this game four years from now as well, so that's worth $200 to me."
When they go F2P, you do not get everything the paying customers get so your point isn't really true.
For instance in DCUO, you do not get everything as a F2P player a Lifetime sub gets, specifically new powersets, certain types of armor, and many other things. Sure you can play the game from 1-30 but most people like many extras and they end up spending the cash on them piecemeal.. and this is where they end up spending MORE as a F2P game than a lifetime.
Lifetimes are definitely worth it if someone envisions themselves playing past a one year mark (if the sub is $200) because after that they play forever and never pay another cent whereas F2P will constantly have to put out money over that time to get more than 'basics'.
Historically, it's been a smart move to buy a lifetime sub to a AAA mmo because not one has even shut down ever and playing one such as LOTRO has saved players possibly several thousand dollars instead.
yeah, that one looks like it's going belly up for sure. But anyone looking at that game should have known that. The company was poorly funded, the game was bought second-hand basically, and they had an extremely small crew working for peanuts compared to AAA mmo companies. That mmo was also NOT a AAA mmo even though they charged like one.
That said, the AAA mmos that offered lifetimes are all still running but the key is if someone likes the game. If you like a game (even if others think it's bad) and pay for a lifetime fee, if you are happily playing along for years before they shut it down it's still a very good deal for you when you prorate it out.
For TSW, at $200 Lifetime, you'd only have to play 13 months until you break even vs someone who was paying $15 a month all along. When you pass your 13th month, the game becomes free after that for you to play.
It also cuts out the one-man guilds that run around with names like "Sexpot Storage" or "Billy's Bank" or "Bankaloosa" because they didn't allow people to easily start collection spots using alts.
