The streamed trial thing is only available to a subset of people; those close enough to Gaikai's servers, and who have suitably low connection latencies to those servers. That's nobody outside the USA (probably) for starters. From that pool, a number of people who view the page are chosen (apparently randomly) to get the trial functionality.

I believe the Lab wants to see if the trial experience generates more registrations than without.

I had a lot of stuff going on, and decided to focus on my own blog for the time being. Tough decision. The Massively team is pretty awesome, and I miss them.

Actually, it isn't a full client - nor is it intended to be. It's stripped down to the most basic walk-and-type functionality.

You also cannot connect to an existing Second Life account with it. Only to a demo 'guest' account.

You've got a fair point. It certainly looked like a larger issue at the time of writing - although, perhaps, it could still be problematic to a number of pieces of software in development, I imagine.

And yes, one can still run one's own edition of ajax life on a system of your own, though it would need to have the identity strings altered to circumvent the ban that I understand to be in place on it presently.

Not necessarily. Linden Lab describe themselves as going "back to basics" - it's one of their new mottos. Quite what that means, though, is open to interpretation.

I'm not sure that it has really occurred to them. It may be, however, that it would be a mammoth task to rewrite the presentation layer. The code has little clean separation, and the code that handles the UI is almost inextricably bound up with low-level services and communications. It's impossible, at this stage, to rewrite one without rewriting the other.

The initial draft Viewer 2 UI designs appear to pre-date Big Spaceship's involvement. After the Web-site redesign, it isn't clear how much involvement Big Spaceship had in Viewer 2's UI, as they parted ways with Linden Lab.

The UI design was completed by either their successor, or their successor's successor (I understand there were 2 or 3 design firms over the period), or actually (and I think it more likely) by the Lab itself.

It's in the seventh paragraph, just before GPVE is used as a shorthand thereafter. GPVE is shorthand for "General Purpose Virtual Environment"
