Vanguard's fourth anniversary raises new questions

Feb 1st 2011 2:55PM (Massively)
Vanguard is such a superior MMO in so many respects, too many to go into here. Needless to say I, and my entire guild, thoroughly enjoyed Vanguard for over 3-years but ultimately the lack of development and support resulted in us leaving the game.

Yes, SoE did get it to a much better place when they took it over from Sigil but after getting APW and some other huge content additions out the door, the resources for the game were diverted elsewhere.

I loved the game, the community, darn near everything about Vanguard was awesome and if they re-launched, re-dedicated or otherwise invested more into the game I would go back into a second.

Our guild is going to play Rift and although Rift is OK, it's really made us all miss Vanguard even more because that game did SO much right.

The Guild Counsel: A closer look at guild management

With regard to signing up on the guild website, this worked very well for our Vanguard guild.

First, if someone was willing to sign-up and fill out an application for membership, it showed they were serious about joining our guild.

Secondly, the guild website was the hub of all of our communications from the weekly schedule, to ad hoc events, to the code of conduct, to raiding loot rules and on and on. It simply didn't work to have a guild member who wasn't willing to get involved with the mechanics of the guild.

The Daily Grind: If you designed a quest, what would it be like?

The best quest I've ever seen in an MMO is the flying mount quest in Vangaurd. Second to that would be the original epic weapon quest in Everquest.

The Daily Grind: What's your most memorable MMO rite of passage?

Everquest - 1999. Venturing into West Karana at night with two friends and not being able to see anything but the main trial. We were able to fight off the occasional bear or lion but knew if we ran across Brigands that we'd be done for. We decided to try to make it to the first guard tower (T1 - anyone remember T1 and T2 in West Karana?) and wait until morning to continue.

We made it to the first tower, bruised, battered and barely alive to find 10 other players also trying to hold out until dawn. Someone had a light stone and we spent the night fighting off the wildlife and the occasional Brigand attack until the sun came up.

Those were great MMO days.
