Yes, that risk is very overblown. I played the game for 4 months and never got blown up. I did a good bit of research about how to stay safe and followed the tried and true advice, however :)
It took me a while to put my finger on exactly what was missing, and you pretty much sum it up.
I recently tried Champions Online, and I think I was cared more about my character after an hour than I ever did about any of my 3 TOR toons (level 35/35/21). Not that I'll be playing CO for long; It has its own glaring issues (and also didn't have hundreds of millions put into it in the first place). It's hard to put a price on that feeling of investment in your toon though.
TOR is a fine replacement for WoW. Here's hoping GW2 isn't :D
Yep, smart enough to know what is fun and allows for freedom and what is a carefully-constructed maze designed to keep you busy long enough to continually fleece you out of sub money. Bitter? Yeah, you can blame WoW for that :p
But seriously, MC is deceptively fun/interesting, and if you're a creative type or casual gamer, can even be a long-term game. I refer to my server as my "retirement MMO," because I can modify the world endlessly and I can always throw out the annoying people :D
I'm trying to like TOR but I'm struggling. I had an item disappear on me the other day and they just close all tickets, nothing but canned responses. Then the bugs (of which there are a lot), some serious class balance issues and the UI...
Yes, much of it may get fixed, but the game is out now. Oh, and I would be playing it but I'm stuck in a 200 person queue atm.
The the fact that no one in guild talkes because everyone is busy watching their interactive tele (aka cut-scenes). I now joking refer to it as "that game where no one talks."
This is the not WoW-killer you are looking for *wave*
