In 1999, when I was but a mere 13 years old, an amazingly hot Korean woman (who was probably Girl status, but I was 13. So very woman) passed me a disk with Ragnarok Online's international alpha.
I was pestering her and talking about vintage anime like Green Legend Ran, GUNM: Battle Angel Alita, Black Magic M-66 and Shadowskill. Either these were good things, or she was sending me off with bait.
The translations were barely passable for a long time, and 56k had not yet left the masses in South Carolina, but it was glorious.
Great music, fulfilling stabbing of PecoPeco eggs, porings and later MVPs.
IRO Chaos server. Celuvix, Iudicium, BargainHarlot. That's how I got started.
The "recent" sales aren't so recent. The Christmas of the year following TBC's release (not the Christmas of the year it came out, but the following year) was the first year of the $9 holiday season sales.
Many people didn't know of this, because TBC was the first expansion. I think anyone that still plays WoW--or any full sub commercial game--can tell you that newer players tend to miss things right in front of them.
How many people are completely oblivious to new promotions? Far too many to count. The WHOA WHAT IS THAT ROCKET question for Recruit-A-Friend is a great example.
Another good example--to continue on anecdotal samples--is the holiday sale during Wrath. Trade chat on multiple NA and EU servers (I've friends on both and play both, leftover friendships that never ended from the military days) was full of confusion.
Not only were they confused and completely ignorant of the new promotions, but even after telling them "Go to worldofwarcraft.com or look at the launcher when you log in next time", but many people would bang their heads against the wall to demands PLZ TELL ME HOW TO GET.
It isn't a trait of WoW only. It's been on Perfect World, Dark Ages of Camelot, Ragnarok Online, Everquest 1&2...I could list a pedigree of games, but it's simply an issue of "humans don't read".
The sales still happen, but this is mostly to address the "is it too late?" aspect. It's not, there's just a...I don't know. A balance between having promotions that can be easily found by people away from the game at different times of the year versus being too obtrusive.
You don't press F to go into targeting mode. You can move around with your keyboard, or you can control your direction with the mouse as you move.
I never had to press F aside from talking to NPCs or if I wanted to...not move around for some reason. You move around, you aim with your mouse while moving or standing still. Pretty simple.
I don't pretend to change them for society. Date gamers, eat whenever, work to sustain yourself.
Being in the IT industry before the .com bubble burst and making all of my savings before there were tons of MMOs helped. Anime downloading over 56k taking longer also helped.
