The Tattered Notebook: Station cash, server merges, and musings from the community

Oct 26th 2010 1:04PM (Massively)
What SOE tried to do with EQ2 engine was to create an ultimate engine to prevent switching over to a new one every few expansions, like they did with EQ1. At the time, both Intel and AMD were on the GHz race and there were no signs of multicore CPU's or threaded applications. So they just built their engine around that, they figured CPU's would get to extreme GHz values in the future, which would make their engine infinitely compatible and scalable, compared to rapidly changing GPU architecture.

Fast forward to today, we got mainstream 6 core CPU's and monster GPU's that are lightning fast on parallel computing. Totally different from what one would have expected 8 to 10 years ago (time they started working on). This is the very same reason why WoW is also dependent on CPU. (WoW requires very little to run but thats not the point, it is still CPU bound)

EQ2 is a title that could have been in the place of WoW, but SOE made one mistake after the other. Alienating their own fanbase, lack of marketing, lack of direction, lack of balls to address ongoing issues, list goes on.

For huge majority of people, including veterans and outsiders, EQ2 is just a wreck that is waiting to be put out of its misery. SOE will claim for a long time that EQ2X is a success, they will repeat that every chance they get, but that won't change the facts.

Any of you guys saw the last fanfest dev Q&A session videos?

New WAR40K trailer introduces first playable race

Blood for the Blood God!

Didn't they said they were aiming for more friendly experience to WoW players so they could instantly switch?

Arguing over sandbox vs theme park is a moot point. It could have been an awesome game with sandbox dynamics though.

Gamescom 2010: BioWare reveals 10 new advanced classes for TOR

Aug 18th 2010 12:38PM (Massively)
Seriously? We have Jedi Classes that were in KoTOR that never even got mentioned in TOR and best you can come up with is Shadow & Wizard

This will probably get voted down, but, how generic can you be?

I'll end up buying this game but it gets less and less exciting, hmm, maybe its the hype wearing off?

Perpetuum introduces Intrusion PvP system

Aug 16th 2010 2:57PM (Massively)
Combat is the same Lock Target > f1-f2-f3 > Loot. Its a direct copy of EVE. But, you have WASD control, which kinda spices it up as it allows you to directly control your transversal velocity amongst other things.

I haven't done any manıfactoring (crafting) but it is supposed to be similar.

It's pretty much a carbon copy of EVE, from character creation screen to UI and garage, everything is similar (read: almost the same).

Perpetuum introduces Intrusion PvP system

It's pretty much a direct copy of EVE, on land, with mechs.

If you apply to their beta they usually approve within a week (sometimes in the same day).

If they can pull it off, it can be a nice alternative to EVE.

Latest EVE Quarterly Economic Newsletter highlights Tyrannis insurance changes

Aug 11th 2010 2:18PM (Massively)
Old insurance system acted as a buffer for minerals to prevent them falling in value. With new system, its only natural mineral prices would go down. Only thing holding mineral prices right now is the insurance pay itself.

As for the insurance to pay percentage of the mineral cost, I don't think CCP can do this without some of the giant entities abusing this to their own ends. Even though EVE market is huge, it is prone to mass manipulation, has happened before, will happen again.

Sometimes I think removing insurance altogether and making some changes to trit dependence, would bring back the risk vs reward mining once again. Would be interesting where the prices would balance out.

My guess is, it will be a wow/free realms hybrid and everything Everquest (except some of its lore) will cease to exist. (Talk about irony, clone of a clone)

What I'm hoping for, really is the Everquest 3 like you, but thats a very small chance in my opinion.
