The problem I see, is the fact that a lot (if the forum pages are to be believed) of current players really liked the effects the way they were. I mean REALLY liked them.
For me, especially on my troub, the effects were class defining to an extent. Leveling a scout has never been an overly enjoyable experience, but the effects make it somewhat less of a chore.
Now I can see that some may think them (the effects) as over the top, and I respect that. But is that a reason to completely scrap the current, and well-liked system? A way to toggle between them was all we asked for. We were told that it would take too much manpower to oversee two separate particle effect systems. Please tell me what it is that I'm paying you for?
I've heard the cries of /ragequit before in this game. The sad thing is, a lot of folks are actually doing it this time.
I was sad to see these changes go through to Live. Those of us on Test begged them not to implement many of the things that went into GU 57, but those concerns fell on deaf ears.
I play a Troub and a Conj as my two mains, and sadly both of those classes spell effects took a major castration.
As a player since '04, it was sad for me to actually cancel my account, but I do not like where this game is headed. I had hoped that SOE would listen to it's loyal customers, but 50 pages of concerns on the official forums later, still no response from anyone at Sony.
Good luck to those choosing to stay. I fear you are on a slowly sinking ship.
There are just too many games coming out for me to continue to support a gaming company that cares less about those that got them where they are today.
Holy cow, go take a look at the official forums about this update.
They are literally going up in flames over what SOE did to the combat and spell animations. And in all honesty, they do look alot like something I would do with MS Paint. :)
How on earth can you say this will not effect LOTRO subscribers at all, when it has not even been implemented yet? You have no idea what items will be in the store and no idea what it will cost in terms of TP. I've seen some of the items in DDO's shop. Yes, technically you can get item X by farming for it for 10 hours straight, or we can sell it to you for $1.50. So please, let's not come off that Turbine is better than Sony in any way, shape or form.
Any thoughts on whether this will be a positive or negative for LOTRO, or EQ2 to a lesser extent, is pure conjecture at this point.
I applaud SOE for not taking the sleazy route with a F2P pricing model.

EverQuest II Extended sounds the call to soft launch [Updated]
Aug 20th 2010 7:04PM (Massively)Sadly, SOE nerfed a ton of particle effects with this launch, and I'm not sure why.
It used to look a lot better. There are a ton of pages on the forums griping about the dumbing down of the graphics.
So I guess what I'm saying is, for some reason, we get a worse-looking game in order for everyone to be able to play for free.
