My friends and I played Atlantica Online heavily for over a year. We still have enormous respect for it. We left because it required PvP to advance beyond level 120, and we are 100% carebear PvEers. In all that time, one of the three of us spent $10 in the cash shop; the other two spent nothing.
I've had related thoughts concerning alien invasions. Given the staggering age of the universe, the average difference between us and any aliens who might notice us is millions of years. Wiping us out would be easier than pressing a button. (They've surely advanced beyond the need to press buttons.) Fortunately, we have nothing they could possibly want, so there's no reason to wipe us out. Alas, not so for our own rebelling robots, who presumably would be roughly as advanced as we humans.
I've used the EQ2 launcher yesterday and today, and there was nothing about this sale. I subscribe to the EQ and EQ2 newsletters, and I received no email. Yes, this was a stealth sale.
I logged in myself, ready to pay at least $20 to get Age of Discovery for EQ2 on this sale (which YOU misinformed me was good through today), and found the sale was over.
Yes, I hold SOE to a different standard, because it doesn't cost them any advertising money to tell us about a sale--just a picture in their launcher, or an email. But no, they couldn't be bothered to notify me. I'll give my money to a company that actually cares.
I logged in to my EQ2 account and saw the 2 for 1 SC sale today, but when I went back to make the actual purchase, it was gone. Stealth sales that vanish midday are a great way to treat customers like dirt. My friend and I definitely won't be going back to EQ after all, and I'm not going to spend a penny on EQ2 either.
Thank you for the good news, Yellowdancer! I seem to be unable to see the items in the shop at Maseno's link. (I imagine I need to install the whole game to see them.) Would you mind reporting how much the AA cap raisers cost and how far they raise the cap? That really might convince my friend to return. Believe it or not, grinding AAs was one of his favorite activities! Again, thanks!
Alas, my old EQ adventuring buddy has no interest in returning because his main already has over 1000 AAs, putting him beyond the Silver account cap. He'd have to subscribe, which is what caused him to quit in the first place, with all the great f2p games out there. Without him, I'll not be returning either.
Unless...there wouldn't happen to be a one-time purchasable AA cap unlock, would there? I might be able to convince him to spring for that.
My friends and I shall surely return to the world of Norrath when this happens. We've missed those unique game-altering powers like Call of the Hero and Headshot, clickies that give cross-class skills, clever things you could do with shrouds, and even the pacifist characters we played to level 39 without killing anything. Other games seem so concerned about balance that they've eliminated the fun of devising strategies to use myriad powers in clever ways. Thank you for doing this, SOE!
Holy mackerel! I've always ignored LoL because I thought it was a PvP game, and my friends and I are absolutely, positively 100% carebear PvE players. Now I suddenly find out we can play? Thank you for this article, Matt, and thank you, fellow readers, for your informative comments about this!
The first thing I'd do is take my level 20 Runekeeper and level 7 Burglar out of mothballs and play them! I created them during the 30 free days of VIP access included with my boxed copy of Moria, and they've been locked away ever since.
